  • From "Baby Botox" to "Sephora Kids": Dark Side of Skincare Obsession | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Skincare has become an obsession across the world. But is there a dark side to this? More youngsters are seeking Botox across the world. Botox is a minimally invasive procedure, usually used by middle-aged people. But Gen-z has given Botox a new twist, by calling it "baby Botox". Focus on "perfect" skin has trickled down to Gen Alpha or those aged 13 & below. They are called "Sephora Kids". These tweens have multi-step skincare routines. Does this obsession do more harm than good? Why does the world seem crazy over skincare? Palki Sharma tells you.

Accurate ! so is skin care. I never had one pimple in my teens. I never applied any chemical even if one or two came. There's an age old technique of repeatedly applying your saliva to the bump which will cause it to reduce because it has anti bacterial something.... I've never had any issues with my skin. Of course if u go to salons they will make you feel bad for whatever you have. I don't care about the minor spots or craters. In the first glance it all looks perfect without flaws that's all one needs

It goes about many things really. Those who go out of their way to "seek happiness" are often the most miserable.
I think I know the reason why this is the case.
That's because they operate under the assumption that it is something to be "found" but the truth is, it is more of a decision. Not to mention, this narrowed state is implicitly understood as a universal good and when one notices that they're NOT feeling as such, they end up getting worked up over it.
Sensory stimulus without meaning so to speak.
Funny thing is, it is really a function of your actions. Does the act of seeking happiness make you happy? Of course not! It is like running to find the peace of standing still. You do it in lieu of the other.
There are so many "made up" stuff and terms and in my observation, I believe that the mental health crisis that we see today is primarily fueled by this incorrect encoding of conceptions

Society needs to learn that ageing is normal as you age. Your skin will naturally get saggy and wrinkly over time depending on your lifestyle and genetics. If you want to look younger than your actual age eat healthily and make sure that you're practicing healthy lifestyle.

I can tell you something here, just sharing my experience. I usually cut my own hair. It’s not complicated for me.
And since 2020 I haven’t visited one salon. And teh salons I visited before were simple just hair cutting men salon, I am lazy to put efforts for my hair.
This December I went to a proper salon my aunties and my cousins go to. And I was sitting there after they applied hair mask to my hair. And I realised that the mirror in front of me is showing g my skin in more aged manner, I was bit panicked that how do I look so aged suddenly.
My house has a big full length mirror in the living room. So I am used to seeing my face in the mirror. But I probably never stared at my own image for that long. Also the phone filters distort the reality.
And I also realised that salon mirror are designed to highlight the skin texture and make the pores more evident than they actually are.

I'm 63 years old and use skincare products to help my skin maintain it's health and beauty. I would never use botox, undereye fillers, lip fillers, cat eye lifts, micro-needling, facelifts or any other procedure that cuts or needs to be injected into my skin. I eat well, exercise, ( stimulates blood flow to the skin,) drink lots of water, don't smoke etc. That's good enough for me. Whatever happens skinwise after the care I'm giving myself is okay with me. My daughter recently asked me not to have any procedures like botox or fillers performed. I told her not to worry about it because I'd never consider any of those things.😊

as someone who likes skincare and has been doing it since teenage (im 22) i believe the intent really matters behind it. i keep my routine really simple and only buy a product after it finishes. most skincare enthusiasts ive personally seen are also doing it because they like it and they do understand that they cannot completely transform or "fix" their skin. but yes as they grow more and more in number, their intention may be different and may get into cycle of over consumption. the influencers i personally follow are also just into it as a hobby so it just really comes to skincare meaning different to different people. also the sephora kids trend is only in the US and not in india (as far as i know). ofcourse no one needs 20 step routine, like mentioned in the video it can literally disrupt the skin barrier as opposed to the main purpose of skincare. some people have achieved really good skin which gave them confidence and while we all know beauty is only skin deep, lets be real, most people do judge by the appearance or make harsh backhanded comments. if skincare helps them a little, then i dont think its particularly bad thing as long as they have good sense of not associating their looks with their worth whilst doing skincare just to enhance their skin feeling and protection a little better.
also skincare is just a aid, not a solution unless prescribed by a doctor. theres only so much skincare can achieve alone. but yes i do hope people newly getting into skincare are sticking to non invasive and safe treatments unlike botox or fillers

It’s ok to be doing a minimal skincare routine, but they have to keep in mind that skincare doesn’t mean that you destroy your skin with harsh products. I’m 16, have pretty much clear skin and my 3 go-to products are cleanser (mornings), moisturizer, and sunscreen, which I have stood by since the age of 8. Im not saying that you can’t invest in expensive skincare, you can invest in higher-end good quality products to minimize skin damage over time, but stick with the basics in terms of steps until your face is fully developed 😅

Because you know why? You can't always be depressed that oh this won't happen. Because nobody will do it.
I won't do it. And that where the initiative starts.
And often tell people about things making them aware, so they have the choice now to leave it.
And that's all we as individuals can do .
      Every individual i said.
Some don't bother. I don't care about them

@@khushigupta580 my cousin has her armpit hair removal waxing done since she was 15, and she is getting these little phode there. And doctors say it’s hormonal and etc etc, but it’s definitely due to waxing , as most parlour beauticians are highly i professional about it.
I was told by the gynac to trim it with scissors or do laser hair removal, but never wax it. The reason was I also had sensitive skin.
But I tried doing it when I was 23. And I had the same problem. I used to go to gym, bath 2 times, I used to eat perfectly balanced food. Yet I had that problem. It definitely wasn’t hormonal as my tests were normal.
I wish I didn’t do it, but for 3 nears now I am using medical grade scissor and trimming the hair and they are super fine now. And that’s enough as per the doctor as well

@@khushigupta580 I agree Khushi, these days we cannot even give unfiltered opinion.
I personally see myself being that parent as we are overworked and overburdened in this city life. But there are bare minimum things parents can do. Like not making kids stubborn, if they are used to act as per parents guidance, it’s easy to control their behaviour and guide properly. Also many times grandparents are helpless to discipline the kids, because parents don’t want kids to have strict anybody.
I get it that we need to love the kids, but they can be disciplined in a constructive manner.
My didi has trained her kids to always listen to her chachi and dadi. And so sometimes when she has no energy to explain the kids, she video calls my mother, and my mom talked sense to them. And it helps. And like that we all guide them as per the situation.
But many parents don’t want to share that I have this problem with my kid, they want to show that they are perfect babies.
      That’s where the problem is.

Great speech, great article and very educational. But your last question was kind of ignorant. If I'm just wearing skin care. Which is lotion, then I'm obviously comfortable in my skin. Now,if this was about makeup that's a different story make up covers up your skin, but skin care reveals the best skin you have big difference.

You didn't get the point... What she said was clean, tone and obsess.
This is where it goes wrong .
Anyone living in a particular area according to the atmospheric condition would take care of their skin. Like someone living in low humid area would need smth like a moisturizer against the dry flakes of skin to get the best of their Natural Looking skin.
Someone in the area with high temperature and area skin would need smth that makes thier skin Oil free Which gives them the best look of their natural looking skin.
      Normal skin care is normal.
But it is getting extreme with All those full on 10, 15 steps skincare.
Skin is an organ, the upper layer is exactly Same as how your inner body is functioning. And this is not some bullshit i am speaking. Cross check all the things i am saying.
So rather than focusing on their Food And body, its just all about putting on everything..
And you are saying its make you feel good. Then do it. But question before applying every product that is it making the best of my skin? Is it even needed? Or even my skin natural anymore?
I am trying to advocate you. But a wish that everybody Should Be aware in whatever they are doing, so there Are no regrets.
And it's not like we don't know that all these are harming us in the long run.
