- Sometimes a shorter button press could be all you need to win a set. Super Smash Bros players have been modifying GameCube controllers since Melee. These modifications are subtle enough to be tournament legal, but vital enough to give you a competitive edge, depending on how you play of course...

Classic. Thanks for the video fellas.
What's annoying is that the controller company obviously has no basis for their pricing other than "ya, we'll get some sales from that".
TheCarpenterUnion No basis? Do you have any idea how much injection molding and the dies for it cost?
The fact that only a few people are going to buy it means those costs have to be spread across maybe a few hundred people, rather than tens or hundreds of thousands
Nevir202 I agree that the underlying truth is that the market for the product is not large, while the cost of manufacturing is relatively high. This drives the price up. The problem is that by driving the price up, the market shrinks even further, and you have to wonder if the venture was even worth it. To quote one of my favorite lines ever, âWas the juice worth the squeezeâ.
Patrick St. Pierre like most niche products, someone, maybe even the company owner probably wanted it.
Unlike a lot of unrealistic expectations, theyâve probably set a price where they can cover their costs given the low volume they expect.
I mean, say they cut the price in half, or even reduced it by 3/4, what do you think the market is for a $200 or even $100 controller for a system thatâs not even worth that price anymore?
Nevir202 thatâs possible, but the more likely scenario is that they do expect revenue growth over time. Iâm not sure this product is sustainable even if itâs in a wholly unsaturated market.
Good lord, those prices. I was feeling really sold on those controllers at first but now I'd be more tempted to just buy some precision tools and try it myself.

I got one in a raffle and it makes a very subtle difference. Not enough to win any majors tho.
Right and wrong, pros don't use modded controllers from multishine but they definitely use modded controllers from other controller businesses. For melee in particular, most of the top 50 players use a modded Top Notch Controllers GameCube controller or from another company called Battle Beaver Customs. The game demands for controllers to be good in specific aspects so that it hugely benefits the players consistency in their gameplay. In Ultimate, having a good controller isn't as important but still is because many normal controllers have misinput issues caused by snapback, lingering shield problems, or even by dust getting in the sticks causing drifting issues.
@@ShinGio yep! The pegs really help in melee. I was referring to this multishine controller.

Shorthopping is performed by letting go of your jump button before your character leaves their jumpsquat animation. In other words, the timing is dependent on your release of the button, not how quickly you press it. So... reducing the button height might just be placebo, I don't see why it would actually help the button release faster.

Isn't n3zmodgod and Top Notch Controllers the same guy?
I can see the Switch Pro controller with notches useful. I find I prefer the extra button the Pro controller has and it's digital triggers, for Ultimate obviously. But hate the circular gate so I stick with the GameCube controller.
....n3z owns Top Notch Controllers LMAOO
@@ShinGio You're right. I hadn't heard the name TNC in a while so I guess I just remembered them as different things. My B.
8:20 Totally fine. I'm just starting to get obsessed in Smash and already thinking about the things all the pros do to try and learn, when it comes to peripherals, it's not about imitating them, but knowing what I'll need first.
Strange timing for this vid, I spent the whole day yesterday researching controllers to buy because I busted the shoulder button on my old GC controller. I was one click away from spending like $250 on a modded GC controller (at Multishine ironically enough) and at the last second decided not to instead opting to get a Japanese Import GC Smash Ultimate controller (for a still pricey $60).
I've used both the Pro controller and GC during my time with Smash Ultimate and honestly both are really good. IMO the main difference between the Pro controller and GC controllers is essentially just button layout.
I kept switching back and forth between trying to find what I preferred and, even though I have no legacy help from previous Smash games, like you mention in the video the button hierarchy on the GC is a very real thing. It actually helped me improve my play (although I am nowhere near tournament ready) as I felt myself getting more comfortable with the GC controller much faster than with the Pro. This isn't proof that one is better than the other, it's just an anecdotal note of my preference.
The one thing this video actually did do is show me that I really want notches as I main PT as well and constantly miss my tilt angles lol
PS please don't make us play on random maps, let us strike them like an actual tournament. There are plenty of third party options to help with striking maps
The GameCube analog sticks have EIGHT CRAZY ANGLES.
Wow, this is cool! I've seen this video in my recommendations for a while, but I've always put off watching since (coming from the competitive Melee scene) I already knew that it was a notched controller. Knowing nothing about the game myself, it was awesome to see how modded controllers help Ultimate players.
Iâve had that nyko adapter for a while, I really like it since Iâve had an OG GameCube controller for years
The gamecube controller may be the best according to many but there are no decently priced adapters and the 3rd party adapters have more input lag apparently. I'm not really thrilled that I'd have to spend over 100 dollars just for the adapter and the gamecube controller.
The pro controller is still really good
@@jojo6783f its near 100 dollars as well (canadian anyways) and has more input lag inconsistently (even if it's not noticeable, sometimes it could matter) also at tournaments with all the wireless signals around could mess with your controller
Yeah, TBH its BS the controller is good, but it isn't $100 good.
The power a switch gamecube controller isn't perfect but it's definitely the best gamecube controller alternative compared to what's out there I have the wireless version and it's been a much better experience than the pro controller for me at least
I Am ScArce so get an og one than

Just wanted to say, for the Nintendo game cube controller adapter, you only need the black usb to be plugged in! So it only takes up 1 port on the switch.

"Look to make sure you're subscribed right now" damnn I'm one of those that was relying on home page
After the âRaid sha... just kidding thereâs no sponsorâ
I had to pause the video to sub and like. That was great
Itâs actually really easy to file octagon holes into a pro controller yourself and it makes a difference
(Just in case buy a replacement shell to modify)
If you use a GC controller, you should try to cap off the shoulder buttons. It basically just shortens the distance needed to press the digital switch that emulates a full press immediately
I feel like the cutouts on the pro controller would wear out fairly quickly but idk
not if it was metallic
So pros don't really use these. I would say that 95% use a stock gamecube controller. The other 5% use a mix of pro controller and modified versions of these controllers. The notches aren't very necessary imo because they don't guide your thumb to them, you still have to hit the notch by muscle memory. And shorthopping isn't bad with a stock controller as long as you practice it. Don't use macros to short hop, not even the one where you press 2 jump buttons. It's optimal to press the least buttons possible
Optimal for him is different from optimal for everyone. If he cant consistently short hop without the shortcuts then him using the shortcuts is optimal
@@THEpicND No
Anybody can train themselves to short hop without macros. If you can press one button and you're pressing 2, that is not optimal. You're doing more work than you have to. You'll never witness somebody using the two jump button macro at top level. Period
The Saxiest you completely missed the point. He isnât top level. His play will be better with consistency (macro) then inconsistency trying to short hop
@@THEpicND No, his play would be best if he picked the third option and practiced short hop until it was consistent. I understand exactly what you're saying but it simply is suboptimal compared to just learning to shorthop consistently
The Saxiest his human error> short hop macro inefficiency. Short hop macro is optimal for him very simple
You can short hop by pressing two jump buttons simultaneously. You can make this easy by setting a shoulder button to jump and pressing it in tandem with x/y
Yo AJ cameo heck yeah keep it up both you guys love the channels! :D
It really makes me wonder how hard some of these mods would be to do on your own. Given that they're charging quite a bit, I'm guessing these mods must be very technically hard to do, but it could be just a case of "well, no one else is doing it".
They charge a lot, but the notches are extremely bad functional wise. Real notches done by experienced modders is a bit less, and actually work functionally unlike multishine notches
I was so close to skipping the sponsor once I heard "rai-"
"When you need one, you'll know which one to get."
wise words indeed
who is this dude even? some high ass production quality for some gamer in his casa. good work lol
Notches dont change tilt inputs in ult since the input is detected before ur stick reaches the notch. Their usefull for getting the right angle when holding in a direction like for example optimal wavedashes or Firefox in melee.
You can still tilt attack while holding the analog in a direction. This is done on Ryu ken and terry for command normals. So you seem to be misinformed
If you hold the analog after a double jump at the top right notch, and press a button upon your landing you will do a standing light punch to the right. If you held it to the top left notch, you would do it to the left. This definitely has applications in ultimate dude. The above was something I struggled with for near 500 hours learning and mastering that precise analog placement, something those notches would be perfect for
@@TheJamesMeals Well yeah thats if youre buffering the tilt i didnt mention that. If you want a tilt in a direction after inputting a jump(or anything else) you hold on the notch during the endlag of the move before so in that case its basically the same as with the melee examples. I didnt even concider that buffered angled tilts were a big deal so thanks for pointing that out!
This guy is a true gamer for not advertising Raid: Shadow Legends
Respect!
I love the gamecube controller. Theres just something about it. Even with it not having all the buttons and features of modern controllers its still so good.
In melee notches can be extremely usefull. Not only for firefox angles but for other usefull tech such as wavedashing, shielddropping, shield angling, ledgedashes. And thats to just name a few. I wouldn't recommend it getting so many perks for ultimate though
I feel like all the mods would be helpful for Mario sunshine speed running
referral madness I totally agree
Dude... you know you can use the Gamecube controller/adapter for every switch game right? It just recognizes it as a USB controller.
I think you can't use modified controllers in speedruns
@referral madness gamecube controller doesnt have enough inputs for most modern games like the stick click buttons and the extra missing shoulder button
Just buy a hand file and you can give your controller notches for less than $5.
JC JC u can but the precise angles and making perfect notches takes a lot of time to master. Since some angles are very specific on where u need the notches to be and if you mess up u canât redue u need to spend money on another shell
@@casual510 You can buy a CNC for less than $400, these controllers are a total rip-off.
The gamecube bulky adapter only needs the black usb connector, the grey one is vibration.
Bob:NC is probably the best falcon
Marss: am I a joke to you
Coming from a Gamecube Controller modder myself. For smash ultimate one of the most useful mods to do to the controller that you did not mention, are digital triggers with a trigger plug. This converts your analog input from the trigger, to a digital button, the trigger plug gives the height in which the button activates a button press feel. Digital triggers are godlike for parrying.
Hit me up @CVSmashMods on twitter, and instagram!
Personally since I play ZSS a lot of her special and tilts depend a lot on the direction you flick your stick... I suck at that making me either flip kick the wrong way, up b the wrong way, or plain out doing side b instead of a neautral b reverse... But that last one is more me than anything. The notches would help me but... A regular GC controller would be sufficient, taken to account I use Joy-Cons... My GC controller is on its way (finally) đ

Lites are fine
GC controller is the best way to play Smash imo, although these mods are mostly unnecessary. The eight way notches are all you really need since most attacks will conform to this.
And a tip for people who want to take smash a bit more seriously: start learning manual short hops and don't use the shortcuts. The shortcuts are nice for casuals, but prevent you from fast falling aerials after a short hop so it limits your options.
A 'true' short hop needs a quick press-and-release on any jump button. I know some people try to quickly press jump, but it's all about releasing the button press as quickly as possible. Iirc, you got 3 frames to do a short hop so you need to press-and-release before those 3 frames are finished.
The mods are only necessary for melee but we have ucf which makes the game a little less controller dependant
If you didnt know, you can also press both jump buttons to perform a shorthop without throwing any attack...

There shouldnât even be a ânormalâ controller for Smash.
