Enjoying Zor while schooling in the pasture

  • Zor still needs some time and this is the month, and year (2024) that I am committing myself to him to help him overcome a few of his triggers. Most of the work is done. Between maturity, relationship, trust and the foundation he is about 90% SAFE. And, he needs experience now and time to work through a few of his thresholds and at his pace.
So, that is what this video, and more to come, are all about. I'm happy that we can go out by ourselves (the pastures only) and work through whatever issues arise and come out the other end better for it. I am also happy he is jumping again. He's still shutting down, freezing, tripping but we have a go button and he's not taking off!
Zor came to me as a ruined 4 year old, 10 years ago. He had been in "dressage" training as a 3 year old and they were jumping him over 3 foot, 6 feet wide mattresses. He is a registered Friesian, Canadian Sport Horse, and like so many they knew nothing about what they were doing.
He came to me holistically depleted. He was emotionally, mentally, physically, socially and environmentally destraught and unbalanced.
He had the biggest parrot lip I eveer saw on a horse. He could not move in a lunging circle without stumbling to his knees, tripping, leaning in. He was afraid of everything and totally food oriented. He plowed through many of my staff each morning at the gate and ran over a few of my students during his rehabilitation with me, despite my advice to not stand in front of him.
He was a bolter and very dangerous. When I asked his former owner what she did with him, she said she "trail rode" him around the 40-acre farm in NC. She said she would not take lessons with him because she was told he was "unrideable" at the age of 3. His previous trainer told her he had neck issues and hoof problems that left him crooked, unbalanced and unable to ever move correctly again. So, his former owner bought him as a throwaway at the age of 3 in hopes she could make him into a fox hunter.
I have many videos on my channel with Zor over the years. He's come so far and is a testament to what foundation training can do, accomplish, when done correctly.
Unfortunately, Zor's rehabilitation was never completed. Like most trainers and instructors, our personal horses are the last on the list when it comes to putting in the time.
While recovery is a long process for horses and people, and there are some areas that will never be completely healed, if you put in the time and take the time (no rushing!), it will work it's magic.

I really enjoy your channel. You constantly remind me of how subtle and important the connection between horse and rider is. Not only do we need to be aware of the vibe we bring to this partnership but how our horse is feeling as well. Just like our human relationships, we need to be aware of how and what we communicate to create a healthy connection.
