Helping a Horse Become Present, Connected, & Confident

  • A HORSE CAN'T THINK, CONNECT OR SELF REGULATE if they are NOT PRESENT. First step in helping is learning how to read the micro expressions and feel the energy. This requires educating the eye to what you see and developing your internal energy system into a tuning fork. Tuning forks lead to greater attunement, intuition and clarity, your internal baromoter and guide.
Healthy horses who are present are masters at being tuning forks.
This is one of many videos of Dublin, a student's horse that is here for re-training and rehab. Dublin represents too many horses out there that have learned to tolerate humans and everything we do with them.
His tolerance is the same as learned helplessness and what some refer to as "dead broke." They're broken alright. Their spirit is broken and this is what training will do when we don't give horses a voice or a choice.

Great Video Caroline, thanks for sharing!! He looks like he has had abuse and holding his breath a lot.

Thanks Rahansia! Many horses hold their breath when stressed, unsure. It's not always caused by physical abuse either. Too much constant pressure, stress, induces this coping mechanism. It's a precursor to cribbing. Some suck on their tongues, roof of their mouth. Blue still holds his breath and has a stress poop or two when we work in the round pen. It's from his horrible experience as a weanling being run around and around. This is what some of our trainers teach. You have a horse that won't "listen" (obey) or is too reactive (buddy sour, nervous, spooky) and they teach you to get them moving, run them until they either tire or submit and turn in. Such a shame, for everyone involved. It ruins horses and that how/why they get passed around. That's why Blue was given to me at 8 months old. He was ruined.
