- TC200 Paint Thickness Gauge. Hey Everyone, I found a cheap paint thickness gauge that I can use when checking out cars to see if they have been repainted. I can also use it when detailing (polishing) as it lets me know how much clear coat is still left on the car when I'm working.
The price of the TC200 has gone up a lot, I think the TC100 is a good value right now on Amazon Canada, its on the Canadian site and I think if you are in the US you can still get it.

Gotta love you coming by!!! I got this paint thickness gauge so I thought why not make a video of it :) Plus its pretty cool because if you are buying a car its easy to take a long and you can check to see if the car was repainted. If the car was repainted you can prove it which means discount :)

Its a cool tool for sure, can save you cash when buying a car as its easy to prove the car was repainted (some sellers will deny any re-paint)

You bet, next time you look at buying a vehicle, if you get one take it, as it can be a great negotiation tool and save you $$$$$ when looking at a vehicle because you can easily prove a panel was repainted, and ask for $$$ to be taken off the price.
I was hoping we would get one of these for the new paint job we are planning, but no. I would definitely use it beyond the paint job. It would be like a toy and I would be checking all of our family and friends cars and bikes. Such a fun share. Thank you!

you may want to consider paint correction techniques before committing to a full repaint as they are much easier and often times can address scratches that are in the clear coat. Many people even pros often are surprised by the results a good compound and polish job can give to old paint!!!

I actually need to do a touch up Paint job where my friend accidentally rear ended me. It left a few Black marks on the bumper😥
Thanks sucks!!!!! The good thing is bumpers are usually plastic (on newer vehicles) so you don't have to worry about rust. Sometimes if there are "press marks or small dents" from the accident you can use a heat gun (be careful) to get them out :)

I have the same tool (all details tallies as yours) but even after zero calibration attended it cannot give me exactly reading on substrates.For example when i apply on FE and 50um plastic the reading comes 102-113um CON mode,with 1000um plastic reads 1090-1115um.Which step should i follow to fix it?
You have to be careful on CON mode, on SNG (single) reading mode its easier. The machine is very sensitive in CON mode and the reading can keep moving around. Try it in SNG mode to see what reading you get. It should be close, if its close that means your machine is ok and you are moving it too much on CON mode or its not vertical (it has to be square/flat on the surface) Also make sure the material is clean, if its dirty it can affect the reading. Turn the machine on in the air and press the "zero" button, then measure. If you can't get a proper reading on SNG then your machine might be defective. The most important thing is to make you you are putting it straight down on the material and don't move it around. I hope this helps you out.
I have several paint thickness Gauge machines, it sounds to me like you not calibrating it properly that's the whole idea of the shims. Keep it on single calibration, measure in Mills. Domestic stuff is between 4 and 7 Mils. Japanese paint will be between 1.8 to 4.3 mil

Hey brother thanks for the comment. Nope this will not work on drywall. It only works on paint over ferrous and non-ferrous steel (like iron and aluminum) So really its only good for cars. Thanks for watching :)

How do you know what amount would be good? And also how do you know the factory amount?
Hey brother, clear coat is usually about 1.5 - 2.0 mils (35 - 50 microns) but it varies between manufacturers, and the manufacturers don't tell you. You would have to do to a dealer and check a new car, and assume they are all similar for that model. Keep in mind paint thickness can vary between models.
The total thickness including primer is usually over 100 microns. You should be concerned with the thickness of the clearcoat, as you will definitely know when its gone (paint will look very dull). So when you are polishing you are removing clear coat and you can measure how much is coming off. If you use a DA (not a rotary) you will barely take anything off and its pretty hard to damage the paint. With a rotary its different.
The biggest plus for a paint thickness gauge is to see if a car was repainted. You don't have to know how thick the paint should be, you just need to know that all panels should be about the same thickness. Hopefully I helped you out brother!!!!

Is it worthy or do you suggest any other model?
I have tried a few others and I really like the R&D brand. I find they are very well made, and the readings are consistent. You can find others in the same price range, but I have tested a few, and found the buttons didn't work very well, or the reading was not consistent. The TC200 that was in the video has gone up quite a bit. If you are in the US it would be a bit cheaper because of the difference in money. The TC100 in the us amzn.to/3xjDiJX is good value for what you get.
@@GarageKing I've heard and for GM998 & ET330 that are good. Maybe a bit more expensive than TC100
@@redihoxha2940 I actually like the TC100 better than the ET330. The ET330 is a mini unit. The TC100 is about 10 bucks more than the ET 330. The GM998 is a nice unit and its priced between the TC100 and TC200. Now you know whats funny. I found a TC200 amzn.to/3NSGYYK but there is no R&D written on it. I think its a knock off and can't say how well it would compare to the real TC200? Its 95 bucks
i bought this device and it didnt give me a reading when i tested on a range rover vogue 2014.
That is very strange, unless you got a defective one. Now I know that some range Rovers, not sure about all of them, but some after 2012 have aluminum bodies. You have to make sure your tester is set to "non-ferrous" as they default to ferrous, which is iron. So if the setting was for ferrous/iron it would not read at all. You should be able to get a reading on the wheels as well (thickness of the paint on the wheels) double check your settings :) Also if you are on a plastic part of the body (bumpers/grill) then it wont read. But it should have no problem with Steel and Aluminum.
Can you tell me how that was 39mm thick?
Hey there, thanks for the comment. I quickly scrolled through the video and could not find a 39mm. It’s impossible to have 39mm I would say unless you pour paint on the ground and let it dry in a puddle. It could have been 39mils where each mil is one thousandth of an inch. I know I did some measurements in mills and microns. If I said millimeters im sorry about that. I meant to say mills as paint is not measured in millimeters. That’s my fault if I said that. Sorry for any confusion. Good comment :)
Know if yours reads paint thickness on Plastic Substrate ?

@@GarageKing Thanks for getting back to me. The models that use ultrasound are for plastics, wood, concrete, etc... as well. They're are just very expensive.$50 vs $2000... It was worth asking, Haha :)
