FINAL RUGGABLE UPDATE - CURLING EDGES? CAUSES? FIXES?

    After seeing our review on CZcams, Ruggable was kind enough to send a replacement rug when we noted how much the first one was curling. We did everything we could to prevent curling this time around (including never washing the rug). Here is an update as to whether the new rug curled, possible "why's", and our plan for rugs from here on out. Unsponsored, as usual.

    Don't own a steam mop, no worry! We used a towel underneath just the rug layer and a damp towel on top. Take your regular iron on the high setting and starting pressing for a few seconds in small sections. Worked beautifully for us! Thanks for the suggestion!

    Thank you so much for your review! We have the tri-fecta problems of a high energy pittie, we are both aging and are terrified of tripping and live in a very dusty forest. We are on a limited income and just can't afford to throw away money on something that we'll eventually throw away. I was a great idea, but not for us. Thank you for being so candid. I can't express enough how much we appreciate a candid review. ...and your doggos are adorable.

    Yup! 100% same issues for me over here!! I even got a replacement, with the corner tabs- never even washed it and it’s curling all along the edge. I still use it/ keep it out because I have kids and dogs and it’s okay…. But I was worried when my older relatives visit and the corners are a trip hazard!!!

    Happy to subscribe. I love how honest you are. Please don’t ever let a company “buy” you for positive reviews, no matter how sweet the deal. Your authenticity is admirable. Ruggable has lost my potential business when they were constantly deleting negative reviews, and your review helped me finalize my decision. Not cool, not honest

    Thank you so much for being so thorough with the Ruggable review series. I got my first rug gable runner 2 days ago. I was so excited about it! The shipping was super fast; it arrived in 3 days. I didn’t like they don’t give you a heads up at checkout but so happy it came fairly quickly.
    Right away I opened the box and set it up and oh my heart!! was I disappointed! On one end of the runner both corners curl up. 🙄 fresh out of the box and already problems. The corners have the pockets you mentioned, and these pockets make no difference. We reset it on the mat creating some tension, and this helped a bit. However, one corner still sticking up. It’s not flat on the floor. I wish I could add a picture. And I wish I would have seen your videos earlier! Everything you commented on it’s so spot on!!!

    I have a 5' x 7' ruggable that has been through the wash a few times and it's great. It's now 5 years old. I have used double sided carpet tape to stick the corners down (they had not yet come out with the silicone corners when I purchased mine), and that works fine. The carpet tape does not ruin wood floors. If you want to remove it, simply use some Goo-Gone and it dissolves the glue then just use a damp cloth to wipe up the little bit of Goo-Gone residue. For me, also with 2 rescue dogs, the washability is really key.

    I really love the idea of the ruggable rugs. We have two of these rugs as well as well as two dogs. I know that rugable does suggest that the you can vacuum but without the brush roller turned on. I always have mine on because it just picks up the hair better. Thank you so much for the video.

    Not sure if this will help anyone, but sometimes Velcro fails to stick over time because of dog hairs (and other foreign matter). We recently cleaned the sharper, hard plastic side of the Velcro by scraping through it with the blade of a packing tape roll. Works like a charm! Maybe this will help with the edges of the rug sticking better to the velcro base. 😊

    I love my ruggable. It's perfect for someone like me who lives alone but has their grandkids over a lot. If it were a regular rug I would have had to replace it several times by now. I don't have a pet so vacuuming with the upholstery tool is perfect. When one edge starts to curl I turn it around and put the other edge forward and by the time I need to do it again the previous edge has uncurled. It's been through many family dinners and parties and still looks brand new.

    i bought 3 sizes of ruggable rugs about 5 months ago , 3x5 ,2x10 and 8x10. i have a little curling mostly on the smaller one. but i still really like them ! my mother spilled an entire plate of spaghetti on my light gray and white striped ruggable runner and it all came out !!! i was shocked i thought for sure it would be trash . i did have to run it through the washer twice but i am okay with that. everything has pros and cons i guess you just need to weigh out what you're looking to get out of these rugs.

  • @krista6677

    SO glad I found your site. While marketed to pet owners because of washability it seems to also be it's downfall regarding degradation. You got 2 years? I have a huge hairy dog and a Yorkie and live in the country so I'm vacuuming my livingroom and dining room area rugs constantly. I use a Bissell carpet cleaner on them about every 2 months. My rugs are 4 yr old hardware store on sale for $100.00 and they look great!!! But as we are in the middle of recovering from a flood my floors are being changed out so we thought a great idea to up date them and was looking at Ruggable.
    The curling is a HUGE no go as an over 60 yr old. Very very happy I found this as review (and there's a few others) I'll fork over more $ for safety and longevity which makes a more expensive rug a much much better value. Thank you!!

    We’re having the same issues with our 8x10 ruggable, the fraying is getting pretty bad and we haven’t even had it a year. It’s also really hard to attach to the pad and keep everything lined up. HOWEVER, we absolutely LOVE our ruggable runner. For some reason we haven’t had any issues with it and due to its smaller size, it’s easy to reattach properly. We wash and dry it in the dryer at least once a month because it is in front of the doggy door and gets gross quick.

    I had a few areas where the most traffic i simply put down some double sided carpet tape that you can pick up at any big hardware store ie. homedepot. It doesnt leave a nasty residue and you can peel and restick it after washing. I had some fraying on the center part of my large Ruggable contacted the company and after about two weeks they sent me a new rug topper no problem..first time I washed the replacement i had fraying in the center part of the rug...contacted ruggable and they simply refunded me for my topper...now i have two frayed rug toppers and not sure if i will try a third time or just move on to a standard large rug. I do have to wash the rugs about once a month. This happend over a three month period where the fraying on the larger rug just happend more and more...its sad..I do like ruggable but i wish i could feel good about investing in another large rug from them...just not going to work i fear. I have multiple runners and a shag in my daughters room and those have held up beautifully so far with washing about once a month..the rug in my sons room has been washed numerous times now and no problems color has held up great , little curling where there is lots of traffic but double sided carpet tape to the rescue and its all good. I noticed they had a cushioned pad avail a couple weeks ago and just now went in to order and could not locate it now...hmmm. Dunno if my two cents will be helpful for anyone wish you all the best with your rugs. THanks for these great reviews...

    I set one of these up for my sister and I have to agree, they are neat but the rug pad (e.g. underlayment) doesn't quite hold down the edges (their instructions even say you should leave a 1 inch overhang on each side)... with her two boys running around they have experienced similar edge curling facing high traffic areas. Its caught their toes more than once and sent them sprawling. On the plus side it does clean up pretty easy!

  • @PamBJourney2Me
    @PamBJourney2Me Před 4 lety +6

    I think it's because you have pets that you have the curling, because my rug doesn't do this and I dont have any pets. Maybe it's the dog fur or something making the pad not stick to it well. Yes, my ruggable rug is great. No curling at all.

      Because of traffic it stretches out over time and separates from the velcro. I just pull it all up and lay it out again before the edges get to bent and scruffed. I don't mind re-laying it from time to time.

  • @rbeygarcia

    I use an outdoor IKEA rug indoors in a mud room. It is heavy and I used a rubber mat underneath. One side with higher traffic STILL curled, as rolling suitcases, people in a hurry, and a robotic vacuum all do a number across that particular edge often. If my hard-wearing/outdoor rug can curl, surely that one can. They need to find a way to weight down the perimeter of the rug, maybe sewing thick gauge wire or pellets into the trim.

    I wish I had seen this a year ago! I just recently contacted Ruggable about my curling issues. I think it’s a foot traffic issue. The Velcro is just not strong enough to handle foot traffic. I had to take photos of my rug to email to Ruggable. I am awaiting a response.

  • @kastlefloe9493
    @kastlefloe9493 Před 2 lety

    I haven’t noticed the curling but I honestly had stop using my ruggable rug because the Velcro underlay would shed black beads so terribly. It would get all over the floor so I’ve been looking into getting a padded underlay to lay the rug on top of. Also I have a Shark vacuum and literally haven’t been able to use it on the rug because the vacuum sucks up the rug even on the lowest setting so it’s just a little annoyance issues which I hate because I love the look of their rugs and love the fact they can be washed

  • @MelanieElaineH
    @MelanieElaineH Před 3 lety +1

    I would place iron on wide hem tape along the edges if I loved the rug. It stops garment edges from curling such as hems on heavy wool coats and thin faile blouse fabrics.

    I have three ruggable rugs and really like them but I also found the curling to be a big problem and the fraying of the edges a problem as well. The 2.5 x 10 runner that we got was frayed on 3 of the 4 corners when we received it. It looks great overall but not sure how long it will last if the corners aren’t even properly secured. My wife has some anti-fray glue used for fabric that we’re going to try and use to mitigate the unraveling if we can’t return it. I’ve contacted ruggables but not confident they’ll fix without having to pay shipping back.

    So helpful. I've watched all your Ruggable videos and have now decided against. I cannot have curling of any kind, or the pills/fraying on the edge. I've had several Flor rugs (although spendy) and they are easy to take up an individual tile and clean (or replace, if it comes to that). So, am going with that for my kitchen rug. Thank you.

    I appreciate your videos sooooo much! Although this product is still very tempting to purchase for OUR HOUSE, because of it's "washable-ness," my initial interest was to purchase this for my MOTHER'S HOUSE. However, the curling makes this a definite "NO" because of safety issues. Can you imagine the kind of problems that a curling rug would create for a senior citizen, with mobility issues?

  • @Kate-qw8qm

    We bought our rug Black Friday last year. I was very disappointed when we got it since it wasn’t the color advertised. It was blue/gray versus just gray. It’s suppose to be gray but it looks like denim. I messaged the company and since it was past the 30 days they couldn’t do anything. (I was very busy, going through a lot, or would have messaged them sooner). Then we washed it and it shrunk, it barely goes over the mat and it took forever to get it on. It curled up, and it has frayed over the edges. We have a little one and loved the idea of cleaning it so went forth but for $400 we are disappointed. Especially because I loved the feature of changing the rug. I probably would have spent at least another thousand in changing out the designs if they had worked as they said, and had better customer service who wanted my business. I understand they have faults but it’s not right to sell these products at $400 with all the flaws so I truly hope they either adjust the product or the price. We plan to buy polypropylene outdoor rugs as a possibility to keeping them clean. Hope others have had better experiences!

    Excellent bottom line review. I'm just starting to think about whether to get a couple of these. One thing I have a question about, regarding the edges fraying, is whether you're using a vacuum with a spinning brush. I can imagine that a spinning brush would be hard on that stitching. We have only hard floors now, so we just use suction to vacuum, no brushes. Since the pile is almost non-existent on these rugs, I hope that a suction-only vacuum would be sufficient. Thoughts on that? Thanks so much.

    now that you mention Rug Doctor, i assume you've considered something like those home Bissell machines? curious to see your take on them... i tried Rug Doctor once and positively *_hated_* the experience... i find the Bissell option less expensive, the equipment was always in excellent shape (because i own it, and i take care of my stuff), and it was a few steps away (to quickly clean up accidents)... sure, they're not as heavy duty, but i can use them whenever i want so my rugs never got as dirty (as they can when waiting to rent Rug Doctor every few months... IMO the main drawback of the home machines is having to empty the reservoir frequently)... just a thought... 🙂

      Looks like pilling, and you could probably clean that up with a pill shaver

    Have had ours less than a year it doesn’t stay put (only have a heavy recliner on one end) the curling is so bad the rug rolls completely in on both long sides. Also the pockets on corners are not to tuck the pad. Our rug corners has these pockets & instructions say not to tuck as it won’t work because the pad and rug are different sizes.

    • @KBailey024
      @KBailey024 Před 2 lety

      Also would like to add it has been washed and dried on low the curling makes this rug not worth the price. The edges have frayed even vacuuming without a brush head just suction as it states. We have hung dried since curling and it has not changed anything as well as putting curling edges as close to rug pad to help hold down doesn’t work.

    Since you can't wash the bottom layer, have you noticed any moisture (like dog pee) getting threw the top layer to the bottom layer?

    Something as fundamental as curling at the edges should be addressed by Ruggable especially that this rug is quite expensive.

    I so appreciate your reviews. I watched all of them. One thing you did not cover about the rug is the pad. Does liquid (ie pee) penetrate the pad? We have hard woods & my dogs have peed on my area rugs in the past & of course left a dark spot on my hard woods. Thanks in advance

      It's not really a pad. I think it's totally waterproof. It's more like a big rubber/plastic piece of velcro.

    How are any rugs that you buy (ruggable or otherwise) only lasting two years? My parents have rugs in their home that we had in the home I grew up in decades ago and these rugs look practically brand new (and yes they've had pets). I've been thinking of getting a ruggable rug but if they only last two years, it hardly seems worth it.

    Have you tried a fabric shaver on the fraying edges? I have some expensive floor rugs that fray about the same after vacuuming several years and this works for me.
    Question, is the underlayment waterproof?
    Thank you for your honest review. I was considering one as a gift but I don’t want my gift to turn into issues for the recipient. Think I’ll wait until they get some bugs worked out.

    We have 3 saints and the hair! What is the best way to get the hair off the underlayment? This causes the rug to curl. Especially where the shrinkage has happened.

    Thank you for all the great info. I have a question. Can you tell me which color/style your first lighter color rug was? I just got the rug I ordered and even though the color description said it was cream and beige, it is much more of a grey undertone and does not match in my room. Yours appeared to be more neutral but I can't quite figure out which one it was. Thank you!

    Have had several 3x5 for several months. The styles are pretty and the color nuances look like higher end rugs. I’m really disappointed in this product, though. I had planned on buying a bunch for my kitchen, but I’m going to buy a proper rug instead. These buckle and move around, but the worst is the curling. When they curl, not only do they create a safety hazard with potential tripping, but they look extremely cheap. Sad, cause I had high hopes for these.

    Yikes 2 years for a rug? I don’t buy expensive rugs but I’ve managed to get 4+ out of mine, wouldn’t be happy if I had to change our rugs that much. Maybe I’m lucky with my dogs that there hasn’t been much damage besides your typical day to day walking on them! Good to know on these rugs, I was thinking about this company but these issues just aren’t worth it me personally!
