Ka-Bar Combat Kukri: Initial Impressions and a Comparison Test

- Trying an experiment in functional performance comparisons, and without doing much of anything with it beforehand, I put my new Ka-Bar Combat Kukri up against a pair of contenders: A Nepal-made GK&Co "Police" Kukri and the Becker BK9. Spoiler Alert: Something unexpectedly bad happens to one of them.
Semi-final thoughts (for now): The Ka-Bar is a surprisingly good "slicer" but not such a good "chopper". After handling it a bit more, I'll do a follow-up regarding its potential as a "martial" knife.
Let me know what you think of these side-by-side tests, and maybe I'll do some more (preferably when it's not 37 degrees F outside).
I laughed when you were first holding the box you wanted to cut but my jaw dropped when I saw the crack in the Kukri.

I really these kinds of comparison tests you do. And this one in particular because I happen to have that same kind of Nepal tourist kukri! A friend brought it for me from a trip to Nepal some 20 years ago. I always thought it would be the most sturdy one I have simply because of its immense thickness. I have used it to "dismantle" some old furniture, and it stood up well (though not the ideal tool for this). Thanks for the video. Oh, one more thing. Living in the metric part of the world it always amazes me when you say things like three eigths of an inch and 16 ounces with such apparent ease 😄.
I'm hoping this was a fluke in the hardening process. The "Beast" chopped up a whole large dresser without taking a scratch and I've done some chopping with the 10.5" Service. But chopping through one thin press board plank and a few chops into the grain of a piece of firework should not have cracked the edge.
As a southern gentleman i have always loved bowie knives, i have the condor undertaker, cold steel marauder, okc marine raider (sp10), and a few not so premium brands, but last year i ordered a kershaw camp ten tan, and as much as i hate to admit it, the kukri is the undisputable champion of choppers as far as im concerned, i will be getting this kabar combat kukri asap because of the smaller size blade being better for edc carry, im also eying the okc sp53 which i guess is more of a bolo than a kukri, but still probably a better brush/branch chopper than even the sp10

I like those a lot , I actually own the BK 21 Kukri and plan to get some after market scales ⚔️
The BKs are great knives.
The one I have is called the Ka bar 1249 i think but its a machete rather than a knife. I do prefer the traditional kukri handle design better (if done correctly) but the Ka bar versions are still really nice. Cant even compare to the handling of a correctly distally tapered traditional blade though.
This one is a pretty basic slab of steel. Nothing like my nicer handmade ones.
The pin goes through one side of the pommel, through the tang, and half way through the other side of the pommel. So its well and truly in there.
Well, seeing as all these kukris come with decorative stress risers in the form of the notches near the grip, I would have expected them to crack there first. Bk9 and Bk7 are awesome knives.👍🌲
I suppose I should get around to buying nicer grips for my BKs.

Have you seen any CZcams videos by Alan Kay where he talks about Kukris? Think you may find it interesting.
That's the problem with tourist knives you may be lucky like your first one or you may not. The crack seems to be in an odd place don't you think?
I only have an old Becker Brute, if you can call that a Kukri, so not much experience with them.
Yeah Alan has a Frank Gonzalez made blade and he approves the ones made by Frank's folks.
Plus if that's was a Frank Gonzalez Kukri he would replace or refund ,others say they will but he and Kukri House KHHI are the one that really will back their products.
Tourist Kukri crack that's another reason for me to dislike those genuine Nepalese Kukri knives along with how thick and heavy they are.
I got two that I'm very displeased with.
I feel like I need to put it through a destructive test and see if the crack gets worse.

The Khukuri House (KHHI) is considered a much better maker, as is Kailash.
Bias; you should of sharpen the Nepali kukri!!!!!!the Nepalese trust there life with the Kukri! But you are using a Kukri for tourists!!!
My better ones are much bigger, I was trying to use one the same length. I've repaired and re-profiled the edge to be a much better cutter, but these "Scandi-Grind" tourist kukri just don't cut well.
Why u need a Kukri to cut ur Recycling?
