In 1613 The Zemsky Sobor (the National Assembly) adopted a decision to invite Michael Fyodorovich Romanov to become tsar of Russia. This decision was announced in Red Square in front of numerous crowds of people: “Michael Fyodorovich shall be tsar and lord of Muscovy and all the Russian state.” In order to prevent disturbances, Michael Romanov had to take a terrible sin upon his soul - to execute a 3 year-old boy…
The most vivid pages of Russian history and the establishment and consolidation of Russian state power are associated with the eighteen Russian Tsars of the House of Romanov which include such historic names as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas I and Alexanders I, II and III. The dynasty ended with the brutal assassination of the last Tsar, Nicholas II and his family by the Bolsheviks in Ekaterinburg in 1917.
The Romanov dynasty played a hugely important role in world history, and the series highlights the life stories and characters of the tsars, recounting their rise to power and their contribution to the dynasty, their merits and their faults, their achievements and mistakes, their victories and defeats in war.
The series also examines the Russian form of 'Caesarism' as a system of state administration - its advantages and drawbacks and how the Russian state changed under the Romanov's rule.
THE ROMANOVS is told in eight epic one-hour episodes using a unique combination of magnificent CGI animation and dramatic reconstruction with careful and accurate attention paid to each period.

A perfect documentary. Thousands of classes over Netflix. Fluent narrative, normal tone, no cringe emphatic voice and without interviews with second-hand teachers who repeat the same words. No useless special effects, pure information. Thank you!
You're right about your voice observations. However, that looked like Finland, not Sweden.

My favorite documentary we need more movies about the Romanovs that don’t involve the last ones.
This is an absolutely exceptional documentary series.
Extremely informative and captivating.
This is the most outstanding documentary in Russian history.
Tsar Fyodor is so underrated and glad they give him the credit he deserved
Michael Romanov feels like such an underrated historical figure. He unwillingly accepted the role of Tsar, inherited a volatile country, faced political and personal betrayals yet stayed true to his convictions and geared Russia towards development. He laid the groundwork for his successors and didn't let anyone else rule him. Truly a man who is overlooked despite being the founder of one of the greatest empires in the world.
If he okayed for that three year old to be executed then he’s a baby killer. With all the achievements he has done does not change that factor
@@Jhh241 You need to remember the time period. That type of stuff was normal. It was a savage time period. Now Peter the Great policies and onward really screwed over Russia…even now they are paying that price
I totally agree with you...I mean he seemed like a pretty important piece to the Russian empire. Michael and the land ended up being at peace and he had good morals and principles didn't just listen to anyone he went with his intuition. I really enjoyed this video!
They stated his eldest son inherited the Czar position at the same age his father was when he inherited it.
The country was transformed they said.
Michael Romanov was 16 y.o boy. He was sickly and poor educated. He choose as Tsar due to be a puppet for the boyars.

The narrator's perfect voice for storytelling with the dramtic music in low volume in the background is how a historical documentary should be.
Definitely - it’s a perfect balance , can watch/listen endlessly
Incredible series. Tsar Alexei letting a falcon open his vein for a blood-letting procedure is another level badass (48:25)
I agree! His falcons were very cool. He also sounded like an avid gardener. Cool guy.
? Alexi was a hemophiliac, the only child who inherited the disorder, the 4 girls did not have it , but probably carriers . It was referred as the English disease because of the marriage between cousin passed from Queen Victoria to daughter Anastasia to Alexi
@@Kim-J312I think you are speaking of a different Alexi... The one you talked of was the son of czar Nicholas around the time of the first world war, long after this Alexi. This one grew up and had a family, but the other was executed by the bolshevics while still young.

I am Russian (real Russian, not just of Russian descent :), and I am learning SO MUCH MORE from this documentary than I "learned" in all my middle and high school years! I always found our history textbooks boring and poorly written, and the two history teachers we had could not really engage and fascinate us. Basically, we were only learning the chronology of events, without being told the exciting stories and personalities that were behind those events. Thank you for this fun and education!
Real Russian? You're writing sounds Real American to me. I always thought "Real Russians" are the ones that actually love the Fatherlamd way to much to ever leave it. Let me ask you a question. The newly re-aquired lands of Crimea have many people there that were born and bred citizens of Ukraine. Are they real Russians? Are Russian Jews that have never known any other country, real Russians?
Are the people of Dagestan, Tatarstan, Chechnya real Russians?
Was Stalin a real Russian?
How many real Russians have roots originating in Mongolia.
Do Moscovites really believe that anyone not from Moscow is really anything other than at best a 2nd class Russian. Do People from St.Petersberg see themselves as Russians first or are the Peterskayi first and foremost. What a waste of Earth that country really is. How many millions and millions of real Russians no longer exist because other MORE Real Russians had them murdered throughout your real Russian history.
So much land so few Real Russians left.
Yes Russian people are clever , intelligent, self centered and snobbish. But morons. Morons who allow themselves be overrun and overburdened by tyrants, oligarchs, etc. You fall for the Cult of Personality. You need a strong Dictator to rule because you're all so unruly and really unbrotherely with one another. It's everyman for himself land. I was born there too. Disgusting

I so greatly enjoy these documentaries, I make it a point of watching them a couple of times a year, at least. Other nations could learn a lot from this Russian Production Company, Star Media and its exceptionally high standards, with these beautifully-produced historcal documentaries. The attention to detail is dazzling: costumes; illustrations, character casting; even the use of hundreds of live animals as set dressing to add to the authenticity of the proramme merely drives home the historically evocative ambiance of this groundbreaking series.
And Russia's Historically widely-acknowledged musical excellence is obvious in the background music and the powerful Credits Score.

We in America were taught nothing about Russian history in school. It's a privilege to get this education.

I was taught some in my school, but even if I didn't, it wouldn't have mattered. Why would Americans be taught Russian history, or in this case, the history of the Romanov dynasty? The only "Russian thing" Americans should be taught is the purchase of Alaska, the 7 Years War and both of the World Wars. Everything else adds nothing of value for Americans.

How cool that he actually WASHED the coins and the virus didn't get to the military because of his foresight. Brilliant stuff.
I was struck by that too. seemed ahead of their time on that idea.. but then again, how long can plague survive on a coin? idk. might have had something to do with the fact that the money was going to an army... all their food that rats might get at is moved constantly. no walls for mice and rats to set up and get cozy in (and spread plague) when you're in a military tent. and armies maybe don't haul their sick with them?
@@travismiller5548 if the coins were made from copper it would totally make sense... Did you know that 95% of bacterias die when left on a copper surface? This is why old door handles and hand surfaces (staircase railings etc) were made from copper! It prevented disease from spreading. Cool huh? We should still be producing things with copper surfaces.
And it wasn't that they left the dead behind, it was that NO one in the military contracted the disease to begin with.
They have also since discovered that it wasn't rats that carried the disease, it was the fleas that lived on them that carried it. Fleas that can easily live on other animals.

Sadly history is hardly taught in schools anymore. My friends son graduated high school recently and the only thing he learned about ww2 consisted of four pages. I was astounded when he showed me what he was taught. I guess we were the last generation to learn anything. I remember learning about the french and indian war for at least 3 years (just a minor example). Now they get a short lecture and do a test and never hear about it again. To be fair teaching is hard for low pay outside colleges and not everyone is interesting to listen to. Most of the information I've learned was after graduation. There's no way I would've sat through 4 hours of Russian history in a single day and absorb every bit of it.
In American schools, getting them to teach American/North American history is hard enough, some World History thrown in. So much history... so little time.

What is very interesting about the Romanovs is the fact that, from the beginning through the centuries to the very end of their rule half of them did not want the throne and would literally given everything for this destiny bypassing them.
Why didn't they want it?
@@geoffreycharles6330 Not everyone is eager to carry the burdon of responsibility, people who long for power mostly forget that you cannot have power, you can only serve power - the sort of power you have chosen to represent. Some of the Romanovs simply wanted to live a life without that burden, they stepped down or refused, passing it to ntext one in line. And even among those who did reign were many who did it with at least one crying eye, a crown is a heavy burden and they knew it.

I wonder if this reluctance of the first Romanov acted as a form of familial curse which was carried out throughout the generations
@@i.p.956 Could be, impo most likely even. There are many hidden traits and also, on the negative side, even disorder creating habits, which are passed through generations in family, often very hidden.
The impact of a throne would even make them stronger. I definitely would not call the reluctance a curse when it comes to the Romanows, I would definitely call it a strong trait fitting great rulers in a cardinal way. People with this trait are often immune to the destructive obsession power can have. Which is a good thing if you are the ruler.
This was so very good...If they made this is exact type of thing for every major Country and kingdom in the World I would watch nothing but this for days! So glad I found this! (or it found me, thanks CZcams!)
Well off to video part 2 (episodes 5-8) Now..already can't wait!🤩
Woke up to this and had to start it over from the beginning. Great documentary
