    I’ve had two Subarus, a 2016 Forester and a 2020 Forester, both fleet vehicles that got the absolute bare minimum maintenance. Had zero problems with them, and I drove through some of the worst environments possible (mining sites and steel plants). Both cars got up to 200k km with nothing but oil changes. Multiple trips through the Rocky Mountains during winter. They are just superb at winter driving. All the complaints about the CVTs and acceleration are kinda silly, the cars are economical cruisers that can get you around safely and on a budget.

    We took one of these for a test drive about 3 weeks ago. In a vacuum, it's a decent car. Our only issues were the small cargo volume (for our needs, it's likely pretty standard for a subcompact vehicle) and I found the seats somewhat uncomfortable. We then took a Forester for a test drive and liked that unit much more. Much more interior volume and cargo space and found the seats to be more comfortable. Also, since the Forester was still a 2023 model, it had the previous infotainment system, which we actually preferred over the "everything is in the screen" style that most newer vehicles are moving to. I guess my only beef with the reviews is how they talk about power. We bought the Forester Wilderness and find the power "peppy". It's not fast, but comments like "scared for my life" and "slow" are ridiculous. We came from a Sorento with the 2.0L turbo, which has quite a bit more power, but honestly don't find the Forester THAT much slower (I'm sure it is slower, but not like its dangerous or anything). I'm sure passing at highway speeds is more noticeable, but just plan accordingly. Around town though, it's pretty zippy. Unfortunately, I think driving all the AMG and Hellcat vehicles skews your opinion on regular vehicles. No one is buying a Crosstrek to set track times or skid pad numbers. It's a commuter car. It's plenty of power for that application.

    • @scott8919
      @scott8919 Před rokem +18

      People are so used to cars that hit 60 in 7 seconds that they forget 10 is still plenty quick for commuting. Flooring the gas pedal to get onto the interstate isn't the brush with death that it used to be like in the 1980s. Some perspective: my Honda HR-V has 50 more horsepower and hits 60MPH up to eight seconds FASTER than a base Camaro from the 80s.

The shifters pep up the sleepy acceleration when in Drive mode (not Manual mode), and I gotta say it does make a difference by you adjusting when the "gear" switches. Most who criticize don't use the shifters but say they're useless. They just don't get it. If you want an actual 6 or 7 speed manual that sounds real and performs, try to find one used or pay for one of the few remaining new models out there that have them. I prefer the Canadian version without the silly yellow eyebrow and side stripe. One thing I don't get about the Crosstrek is that it's just too small inside to use as a camping vehicle. It is however and great surefooted daily that gives you a feel of confidence in rain especially. What do you think of having a CVT for mild off-road stuff? I always thought they should have kept a real transmission for the Wilderness models. I've been mildly shopping and looking at the Forester Wilderness. Hard to get by the prices right now though.

    They just need to make $30k cars that have a *little* bit more power. Like 200hp min. The problem with every “affordable” 2023 car is its painfully slow and if you get one with a nice engine you’re all of a sudden up at $50k+. We can have $30k cars with decent engines, it’s not impossible, someone just needs to do it

Notably, my father-in-law's Escape and sister-in-law's Mazda CX-30, both possessing comparable horsepower and acceleration, affirm this observation. Stopping distances are shorter and handling characteristics are better with all-season tires compared to 'winter tires' at ALL winter temperatures on wet or dry pavement (i.e. cleared of snow). There are two factors regarding this consideration: 1) the composition of the rubber; and 2) the tread design.
    Winter tires have an 'open' tread design which produces better traction on 'loose' or unconsolidated surfaces e.g. sand, mud, snow. However, this open tread design necessarily results in reduced rubber/road contact surface. This second factor is the overwhelming consideration for the longer stopping distances of snow tires on cold, wet or dry, pavement i.e. in spite of the greater stickiness of winter tires.
    In Southern Ontario, the vast, vast majority of winter driving is on cold, cleared road surfaces. Much of this driving is at highway speeds, where stopping and handling are most important.
    Snow tires may be warranted when required to drive on 'deep' snow covered roads where traction is the prime requirement. (Accordingly, 'snow' tires have been rebranded as 'winter' tires - the reality is the opposite for most people. That is, the safest tires for winter use in Southern Ontario for most drivers are all-season tires - not 'snow/winter' tires).
    Look at the test results to substantiate this above finding. (Such results are available). Or otherwise, can you provide ANY test results from any source that contradicts the above understanding?

    The main issue I currently have about the Subarus out now...that ugly matte plastic... really wish they would just make it a option at least, or do a better design.
