Hello Ryan, I’m from south germany 🇩🇪 and I would like to ask you and your community, when ist the best point to overseed and do I have to water 🚿 the whole lawn, if I overseed like in late august? BTW nice video 👍
I think in about a month I will start overlaying grass seed over my existing lawn after watching videos by Ryan Knorr on how to do it.
Holy Cow! Ryan Knorr lawns are spreading through your neighborhood! 🤣
Out here in Salt Lake City. I plan on following your steps for a full renovation starting this weekend. My wife hates the idea, but I’ve promised her it will be okay. Going with KBG from the SuperSeedStore- Mazama 50%, Bluebank 30%, and Midnight 20%. I’m a little stressed out that I’ll have a poor looking front yard for 6 weeks, but I keep telling myself it will be worth it. Thanks for all of your tips and videos. It give us weekend warriors some much needed guidance.
Yes yes yes!!! Lawn Renovations my favorite. I totally agree with you as for taking something that someone is completely unhappy with and turning it to something great. I have so many renovations I'm working on at the moment with Customers and also my own that I still love sitting back and enjoying a good video from the lawn community of there renovations 👍
I really appreciate the effort you put into your videos. Not only do the videos have oodles of info, you show so many "action" shots of you DOING something, not just sitting in front of the camera, talking. Keeps me interested. Great work, you are an excellent teacher.
That's what I was just thinking yesterday is to start my lawn renovation preparation
You would be the BEST neighbor .
I am glad I found your channel. You have great lawn care content.
Ryan, it is not illegal to lean your wheelbarrow against the pile and slop the dirt into it while the pile is tall enough. Love your work.
Super excited to watch the progress 🤗 you guys are killin it! Team work makes the dream work
This is going to be cool to see the progress. 😎👊
Hell yea! I'm ready to watch you do another one! Good luck Ryan. Love you videos.
#1 in USA ,thanks for motivation
Your are right, nothing ever goes as planned!! I'm doing a renovation on my front lawn as well starting this weekend.
Just started watching your channel. I love all your videos and thanks for helping us out! Keep up the great work 👍
Perfect timing as usual. We run a couple weeks later than you, but I'm already starting. Power raking this week. Adding soil to a few spots next week, then starting the incremental lowering of the mower height (I like my fescue to be 2.5" normally). Overseed will be early September. I'm excited too. This is the first growing season with automated irrigation. It's going to be so much nicer to just change the program rather than having to wake up before the sun every day for two weeks just to moisten the seed.
well Ryan sure is a great neighbor to have...looking forward to that! Overseeding mine end of August...man I just love lawn care...!
Awesome cant wait to see this done brother thanks for the video
The neighbor wars start now!
What type of sand do I buy from Home Depot for leveling? Thanks
Ryan that low point between the houses is a swale for water runoff. Leveling that area may cause other issues, love renovations though. Looking forward to the renovation!
Not doing anything drastic there...just smoothing it
If you level that swale the neighbor will immediately have a flooded house. Neighbors will fight. Fights will escalate and someone will be murdered. Is that what you want Ryan? Is it? Is it really?
thejarrod123 Ryan and I discussed this exact potential issue. If I were to regrade the entire sides I would have to put in drainage. We opted to just smooth it out due to 15+ years of hard erosion. My neighbors actually sit higher on the plot so essentially the water would end up in my basement if anything. I appreciate your comment.
thejarrod123 yeah you don’t want to have to dig a hole in the garden to bury them, however, deep nutrients to be gained...
August 8th seed is going down. 9 weeks until first frost of the year. Hopefully the high humidity 90's stay away as much as possible.
Cant wait to watch the renovation. Starting my lawn leveling in a few weeks.
It would be nice if you could do a cost breakdown to do something like this. It looks like an average size yard. I’ve considered it but I always been timid to redo everything due to cost.
Thank you for sharing.
Appreciate you putting this video out as a reminder. My lawn is totally shot and needs to be redone and I was thinking I wouldn't have to start for another few weeks.
One thing I'm having trouble finding is specific resources on how to project costs for a DIY lawn renovation. It seems like all the companies that want to sell you their services have gotten their SEO game down and clogged up "DIY lawn renovation cost" and related searches with their own websites that ask for your info so that local contractors can give you an estimate.
I tried searching "cost" in your videos but the closest I found was the series on how to renovate a lawn. What would be really nice is if there were a dedicated cost video that explains how to estimate how much you're going to spend on this process and the various choices you can make that will increase cost but also end up with a higher-quality product.
Hard one to answer because there's just so many variables. I'll see if I can work on something in the future for a ballpark
Love this kind of videos while I have already sprayed some Glyphosate on my lawn 🔥🔥🔥
You never disappoint!
Thanks so much for your knowledge Ryan. I'm using this info to start renovating my son's yard at his new home. It was vacant for three years and not maintained. Total mess in Southeast Michigan!
Good luck. SE Michigan here as well
I'm doing the same thing in my backyard this year. It'll be interesting to see the similarities.
Already started spraying the broadleaf weeds in prep for my fall overseeding project. Will bust out the RoundUp shortly for the grassy weeds that the 2,4D won’t get. 💪🏻
Need to get Ryan out to NJ. My lawn needs help!
Great video like always! I am beyond thrilled to see what the end result!
It's all your fault....I've been watching your videos for a while now specially the ones about renovating lawns. I have followed them step by step and now I have the greenest lawn on my block....possibly in the entire neighborhood. I just had to modify your recommendations a bit and apply them to my region using Bermuda grass out here in Arizona. Thanks for the videos.
His lawn already looks better with that tree removed. Can’t wait for the videos.
I agree, I’ve wanted the tree gone for a while 😆
I have a 4k' front yard that was originally sodded w/tall fescue 15 years ago. Are there any special considerations for fully renovating (kill, level, seed) a sodded lawn?
Damnit I thought I had about a month to start my renovations. Must go to homedepot tomorrow.
August 15th for me
What do you plan on laying ? I'm another Canadian who can't pick up his products.
@Queencity Limo ya I don't want a golf course lawn . I already have a thick lawn just need to detach and relay some seed and get control of this clover.
Queencity Limo he can’t, he’s Canadian...us products are no bueno until the border opens again. He can spray molasses however.
Same situation here. Hoping to start seeding in a couple weeks. I was really hoping to use tenacity but it doesn’t seem like I can get my hands on it north of the boarder. Anyone have any recommendations?
The legend
Love the videos keep them coming
You need English weather! Thanks for your videos.
This is going to be a great project!
Hey man I'm planning on re seeding my yard when is the best time to do it i live in west valley city utah
I’ve just moved to a new house I bought and there are tons of weeds/crabgrass/ and clover I believe. There are lots of bare patches of silty ground and pebbles, almost like it was fill dirt from the basement when they built the house.
I want to get this grass looking nice.
I’ve got a whole built in sprinkler system but no shade cover. How do I bring this back without adding a ton of soil and ruining the sprinklers/sidewalk height?
Dig out and start over digging it all out and bringing in 6 inches of soil, or top dress the yard and fix the sprinkler and sidewalk height issue. I’ve got a half acre and no tree cover and I live in the extreme cold in the winters and 100+ times in the summer.
Just ideas for me with this soil condition and my sprinkler system headaches. Ive never dealt with silty soil and pebbles.
Hey Ryan...you can come do this to my yard anytime. I am only 2 hours east of you...I need to do this to my yard and look forward to your videos...
That's a lot of work, but it will look great in the end.
Funny my park strip is looking bad again. I may dig it all out and see whats underneath, then fill it back with soil and quality seed. Also planning to over seed everything with a high quality KBG mix.
I'm sure you told your neighbor the TLC needed with KBG if that's what he wants. Is there a plan for above ground sprinklers? Look forward to the renovation. ~ mike
PRG or KBG, what will it be??? Looking forward to this exciting renovation.
Most of my lawn is the crappy wide blade tall fescue 🥺 I will be doing this too and watching closely.
Just does not blend well with the rest, that's for sure
Just purchased my first house back in March (in WI). First thing I noticed this spring was that this yard has been neglected for years. I decided I’m doin a whole front yard renovation (roughly 2300 sqft). I just sprayed my 2nd application of glyphosate on Sunday. My next question is, when deciding when to actually throw the seed down after leveling it, do you pay any attention to forecasted temperatures and wait for a little cooler weather or forecasted rain?
I actually prefer to not have rain so I can control water at the beginning. A trending of temps cooling is nice but I have had many times where low 90s return and you have to keep the watering dialed in and watch for fungus issues. Usually seeding has to be done here in mid August for something like bluegrass.
I'd love to do a project like this, but I'm going to wait until I build a house and get sod/irrigation system. I'll be the happiest man in the neighborhood then :)
I got to renovate very soon!
Are you going to install in-ground sprinklers?
I so want to do a renovation! Just have to find the time...
Hey Ryan
Thanks for all the videos, my yard is pretty bad. I live in South Jersey
I started last year to renovate but never finish thru lol. So do you suggest to start this project Now?
Front yard I have no issues but in back yard is always mushy or muddy am near a creek and i have clay In back yard. How or what do you suggest to start this?
How much water should you put on a new yard. I am doing right at a hour per sprinkler a day. I started off 4 hours to get water soaked in Whats a good average?
What about Transition Zone renovations? (North Carolina). Should I start in a couple weeks like I had planned, or should I get on the Glyphosate Kill asap?
If you can stand to look at the dead yard it's better to start early and have all the weeds and other grasses return so you can make sure it's a clean slate when you seed
I’m going to do an Overseed in the next 2 weeks with a PRG & KBG mix. Have you ever pre-germinated KBG to try and match up the growth rates?
I'm hoping to start renovating my yard soon as well, its been neglected and needs some serious attention
Ryan when should I start with renovating in Ohio?? I need to whip my yard into shape this fall. It is a new construction home working with a lot of crabgrass since the seeding of the lawn didn’t do great this spring and much of it was still bare dirt over summer. Now I’m overrun with crabgrass... help!
Ugh I’m not willing to kill my whole yard but the tall fescue is horrible. I just renovated in the spring using Scott’s sun and shade and it was a huge mistake. Just cut it super short. Core Aerated and after the hurricane passes. Going to overseed with a mix from seesuperstore that the lawn ginja recommended to me. Hopefully the midnight and mazma blue will take it over
bluegrass is very hard to overseed. The best way would be to use a growth regulator on the existing turf to slow its growth while trying to give bluegrass a chance to get going. It is a slow one to establish and the existing grass usually starts to take over again.
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care any recommendations for a growth limiters?
Pramaxis MEC Plant Growth Regulator?
And I'm looking to do the opposite. I have a yard full of all kinds of things, and I don't think the bluegrass and ryegrass are doing real well. If I did a super thick overseed of rtf tall fescue, is there a good chance that will just eventually take over everything? 43,000sq ft unirrigated in MN.
Nicholas Fazio in one of his previous videos he has that info in there. T-Nex
I had a game plan to overseed my existing lawn this fall but after seeing this I'm not so sure on spending the time and money to overseed just to want to renovate afterward. (I wanted to overseed as my existing lawn is in pretty good shape I just don't know what type of grass it is or how it would look if I add seed to it). I would love to do a full lawn renovation but the one roadblock I can't seem to get past in my mind is doing so with 2 dogs. My yard is similar to yours just a smaller scale. (fenced in back yard, smaller section behind the back yard, open front yard) How do you do so with dogs whether you overseed or do a full renovation?
I have surface roots on my lawn and they make my lawn look like crap in July and August. The lawn looks great 10 months out of the year but once its starts getting hot the lawn starts dying off. I'm thinking about tilling it and covering it with new soil and sod. I don't think overseeding is working b.c of the surface tree roots. What would you do, Ryan?
Ryan, I live in the transition zone. Is it to late to seed warm season grass. I have a couple of bare spots that i seeded & was curious if. It’d see them germinate before the Fall. Thanks for your time.
It's still like a million degrees in Georgia so I have to wait until like November to start my cool season lawn 😔
I’ve got a ton of poa triv in my yard. I’ve always heard you should renovate in spring if you’re trying to get rid of poa triv. Any experience with that? Reluctant to do a full reno if the triv is just going to come back next spring. Thanks!
Good job bro 🇺🇲👍
Ryan, do you have any suggestions for us Canadians that are wanting to start seeding shortly but are unable to get a hold of any Tenacity?
Hi Ryan, is laying sod on top of well prepared soil also a good option for those that don't have time to grow new grass?
Renovation question for you. I removed 2 massive stumps from my front lawn. I am in the process of removing as much of the wood chip debris as possible. I also just started the process of spraying out what's left of the lawn for a complete reno. I know I won't be able to get all the wood chips, and I also know they lower pH as they decompose. Would you recommend I do a lime application at some point in my renovation? If so, at what point? Btw, I am in Ankeny IA, so your weather is my weather.
There's a good chance your soil is already high in pH so I would say you can test now to know for sure, or wait until later and see how things go. That won't be breaking down extremely fast.
@@ryanknorrlawncare makes a lot of sense. Thanks a lot!
i killed my lawn on Saturday the 1st. My question is how soon can i seed after using glyphosate ?
Check the label on your specific product you used
Will Tenacity kill milk weed.
Hi can I over seed now in New Jersey? Thanks .
What is a good grass seed for Toronto Canada and is it good time to overseed? I have Scott’s full sun coated seeds I was thinking of overseeding with.
Must be nice living in an area where pesticides aren’t completely banned. I wonder how you would renovate without roundup? Or keep a nice lawn without any weed killers. That’s a video I’d love to see.
Look up solarization
@@ryanknorrlawncare, Cool. Thanks. I did just that. Unfortunately, one article I read said: "...the length of time necessary for this to succeed is an absolute drop-dead minimum of six to eight weeks in the hottest, deep-South areas of the country during the hottest months of the year, in a year with lots of sunny days." Hmm... I'm not sure this would work in the Seattle area. It'll get maybe 85 degrees from mid-July to mid-August.
Let’s go! My #sissygrass is in the mail and on it’s way! This video just got me pumped
Id love to start but we have water ban on - maybe next week.
Do you recommend seeding after core aeration?
I’m on vacation this week, guess what I’m starting tomorrow.
I'm in the Northeast and the heat is burning up my lawn. I'm thinking of planting only tall fescue as it seems like the most heat and drought resistant for cool season grasses. Anybody have any reason why I shouldn't do this? I'm going to be overseeding every season anyways so I don't care that tall fescue doesn't spread on its own as well but I just need something that will survive the summers so the lawn doesn't go dormant or die out during the summer heat. The bunching I see as a benefit to crowding out the weed and eventually I want my entire lawn to be tall fescue.
Fescue is best for heat and drought tolerance
Question: core aeration before thatching or after? I’m about to start the process of getting my lawn truly “reel” ready and will be doing a leveling and seeding with KBG.
I would do it after dethatching
Thanks guys, that’s what I was thinking too
Worst problem about renovation season is it falls in line with 5 weddings for me this year.....the lawn will have to wait another year😥
What grass type are you going to put down? I have a big patch of ryegrass in the middle of my fescue lawn. Don't want to renovate all of it as my fescue is so good anyone any ideas?
Does anyone know of a good “time line” resource. There’s so many different steps to renovations, and a bunch of steps are better to be done before others, and at certain seasons. It would be really nice to have a reference guide that would tell a noob what steps they could be taking at any given time
Not sure what Ryan would say about it but Lifehacker has a decent infographic on the subject.
laconeznamy i just checked it out! Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks so much!
laconeznamy any chance you have a link handy to the info graphic! Sound like exactly what I might need as well!!
Ismail Qadry www.google.com/amp/s/lifehacker.com/this-chart-shows-the-lawn-maintenance-you-need-to-do-ev-1741199079/amp
I planted grass every year and it looks good for about a month and then it dies when it rains so hard. It doesn’t seem like the area drains at all and it just kills the grass. Poor clay soil. I need to figure out what to do about that. I was thinking about getting that bio char humachar stuff that doc recommends.
Core aeration and compost
Great video as usual. My question is if I decide to smoke my front yard, will the nutsedge come back? Smoked my backyard two years ago and the nutsedge came back but it’s not as bunchy, more thin and spread out. I used Pete’s GCI Cool Blue blend. I would probably use that out front too but the damn nutsedge is killer. Funny part is I don’t NEED to renovate but evening out the soil is on my list. Thoughts? Lol
Spray it now with sedgehammer or similar
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care I tried some new stuff Pete recommended. It’s a granular in a shaker can but I forgot the name. I’ve tried sedge, Tenacity and now this. I can’t believe it keeps coming back. I aerate mechanically and with air8 and I dethatch. I water 2-3x a week at 3/4” each time during this crazy heat. Mind boggling lol
I'll start when the tropical storm passes........maybe.....
What sprinkler system is that? I'm interested.
search diy sprinkler system on my channel
When can we expect the newest podcast? In DSM and just sprayed glyphosate on the backyard yesterday and am hoping to get things ordered for the renovation ASAP. Hoping the podcast can help with the purchasing. Thx in advance.
newest episode came out today
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care love the podcasts... keep ‘em coming.
When you start new seed if you're in the middle of the north and south states?
Can't tell you a date really. Generally give it 8-10 weeks before your first frost date
Question. I live in the northeast, so when should I level my lawn?
Early fall
My lawn is PRG 100% dormant and dead. Basically straw now. Been having 95° days for 30+ straight days. Will it come back at all when temps lower? Or do I have to completely renovate?
Some maybe but not likely much of it will come back
Hey All! I’m just starting my lawn care journey after purchasing a new home here in Naperville, IL. I have a pretty basic question and hoping to get some help. The front lawn is pretty patchy and dormant with a boat load of weeds and or other types of grasses. If I didn’t want to do a full renovation, but rather top dress and overseed, when would I start that process? Do I have to wait until the spring? I’ll probably plan on doing this many times in order to eventually get all the same type of grass over time.
Thanks in advance for any advice!!
Ismail
@Ismail Qadry Do it in the fall if you can
I’m getting ready for my renovation. It’s a bit early for me, but I’m trying out some products to see if my baby grass can survive the high heat and humity
So the slopes you want to fill in isn't to get water away from his house and keep it from going into his neighbors house? Also if he is becoming a lawn care nut maybe see if he wants to put a sprinkler system in before killing the yard and leveling it.
I'm aware...I said we are smoothing it, not completely filling anything in
@@ryanknorrlawncare I must of heard it wrong. A guy at work had a neighbor fill that in and then he was getting water in his basement and the neighbor had to pay for the damages to his house and correct the slope. Didnt want to see something like that happen to you! You put out great content! I'm over in the cedar rapids area and was going to wait to do this to my yard but looks like I need to go back threw your videos and get on this project! Lol
How long ago did you make the first roundup application on your neighbors project lawn? Looking forward to the journey!
He put that down a few weeks ago already
What grass did you go with KBG, KBG and rye or Pete's tall fescue since no irrigation?
kbg/rye
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care Nice 👍 that’s my favorite grass mixture
Wanna come to Western North Carolina and do my yard? You can stay here and I am a good cook...😊
Hey Ryan, any tips on where I can get decent grass seed up here in Canada? We don’t have herbicides like you guys do across the border so I’m much more limited on products. I’d like to get some good grass seed down, but all I’m finding are your typical bag mixes from my local Home Depot 🤷🏼♀️
The Lesco brand Double Eagle seed is a pretty good seed if you must go with Home Depot. It’s PRG blend, germinates in less than 10 days, giving you a nice cushion to do renovation or simple overseeding. Grows nice dark green color and you won’t have to worry about getting the weeds that come with trashy Scott’s seeds. Jonathan Green is another good seed jonathangreen.com You’ll also find very exceptional seed at seedsuperstore.com if you don’t want to go the homedepot route or jonathan green.
@@mauriceashes2922 Scott's trashy seeds I just scrapped my yard and my neighbor's too using that. Those bags of coated seeds were full I mean like 1/3 full of crabgrass!
Kbg from osc seeds in Canada
Thanks Maurice, although I believe that seedsuperstore and jonathangreen ship to USA only
