    Out here in Salt Lake City. I plan on following your steps for a full renovation starting this weekend. My wife hates the idea, but I’ve promised her it will be okay. Going with KBG from the SuperSeedStore- Mazama 50%, Bluebank 30%, and Midnight 20%. I’m a little stressed out that I’ll have a poor looking front yard for 6 weeks, but I keep telling myself it will be worth it. Thanks for all of your tips and videos. It give us weekend warriors some much needed guidance.

    Perfect timing as usual. We run a couple weeks later than you, but I'm already starting. Power raking this week. Adding soil to a few spots next week, then starting the incremental lowering of the mower height (I like my fescue to be 2.5" normally). Overseed will be early September. I'm excited too. This is the first growing season with automated irrigation. It's going to be so much nicer to just change the program rather than having to wake up before the sun every day for two weeks just to moisten the seed.

    • @thejarrod123

      If you level that swale the neighbor will immediately have a flooded house. Neighbors will fight. Fights will escalate and someone will be murdered. Is that what you want Ryan? Is it? Is it really?

      thejarrod123 Ryan and I discussed this exact potential issue. If I were to regrade the entire sides I would have to put in drainage. We opted to just smooth it out due to 15+ years of hard erosion. My neighbors actually sit higher on the plot so essentially the water would end up in my basement if anything. I appreciate your comment.

    Appreciate you putting this video out as a reminder. My lawn is totally shot and needs to be redone and I was thinking I wouldn't have to start for another few weeks.
    One thing I'm having trouble finding is specific resources on how to project costs for a DIY lawn renovation. It seems like all the companies that want to sell you their services have gotten their SEO game down and clogged up "DIY lawn renovation cost" and related searches with their own websites that ask for your info so that local contractors can give you an estimate.
    I tried searching "cost" in your videos but the closest I found was the series on how to renovate a lawn. What would be really nice is if there were a dedicated cost video that explains how to estimate how much you're going to spend on this process and the various choices you can make that will increase cost but also end up with a higher-quality product.

    Hey man I'm planning on re seeding my yard when is the best time to do it i live in west valley city utah

  • @allthathpandnotire3019

    I’ve just moved to a new house I bought and there are tons of weeds/crabgrass/ and clover I believe. There are lots of bare patches of silty ground and pebbles, almost like it was fill dirt from the basement when they built the house.
    I want to get this grass looking nice.
    I’ve got a whole built in sprinkler system but no shade cover. How do I bring this back without adding a ton of soil and ruining the sprinklers/sidewalk height?
    Dig out and start over digging it all out and bringing in 6 inches of soil, or top dress the yard and fix the sprinkler and sidewalk height issue. I’ve got a half acre and no tree cover and I live in the extreme cold in the winters and 100+ times in the summer.
    Just ideas for me with this soil condition and my sprinkler system headaches. Ive never dealt with silty soil and pebbles.

    Just purchased my first house back in March (in WI). First thing I noticed this spring was that this yard has been neglected for years. I decided I’m doin a whole front yard renovation (roughly 2300 sqft). I just sprayed my 2nd application of glyphosate on Sunday. My next question is, when deciding when to actually throw the seed down after leveling it, do you pay any attention to forecasted temperatures and wait for a little cooler weather or forecasted rain?

    • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 4 lety

      I actually prefer to not have rain so I can control water at the beginning. A trending of temps cooling is nice but I have had many times where low 90s return and you have to keep the watering dialed in and watch for fungus issues. Usually seeding has to be done here in mid August for something like bluegrass.

    Ugh I’m not willing to kill my whole yard but the tall fescue is horrible. I just renovated in the spring using Scott’s sun and shade and it was a huge mistake. Just cut it super short. • @ryanknorrlawncare
      @ryanknorrlawncare  Před 4 lety

      bluegrass is very hard to overseed. The best way would be to use a growth regulator on the existing turf to slow its growth while trying to give bluegrass a chance to get going. It is a slow one to establish and the existing grass usually starts to take over again.

    I had a game plan to overseed my existing lawn this fall but after seeing this I'm not so sure on spending the time and money to overseed just to want to renovate afterward. (I wanted to overseed as my existing lawn is in pretty good shape I just don't know what type of grass it is or how it would look if I add seed to it). I would love to do a full lawn renovation but the one roadblock I can't seem to get past in my mind is doing so with 2 dogs. My yard is similar to yours just a smaller scale. Renovation question for you. I removed 2 massive stumps from my front lawn. I am in the process of removing as much of the wood chip debris as possible. I also just started the process of spraying out what's left of the lawn for a complete reno. I know I won't be able to get all the wood chips, and I also know they lower pH as they decompose. Would you recommend I do a lime application at some point in my renovation? If so, at what point? Btw, I am in Ankeny IA, so your weather is my weather.

    • @ryanknorrlawncare

Unfortunately, one article I read said: "...the length of time necessary for this to succeed is an absolute drop-dead minimum of six to eight weeks in the hottest, deep-South areas of the country during the hottest months of the year, in a year with lots of sunny days." Hmm... I'm not sure this would work in the Seattle area. It'll get maybe 85 degrees from mid-July to mid-August.

    I'm in the Northeast and the heat is burning up my lawn. I'm thinking of planting only tall fescue as it seems like the most heat and drought resistant for cool season grasses. Anybody have any reason why I shouldn't do this? I'm going to be overseeding every season anyways so I don't care that tall fescue doesn't spread on its own as well but I just need something that will survive the summers so the lawn doesn't go dormant or die out during the summer heat. The bunching I see as a benefit to crowding out the weed and eventually I want my entire lawn to be tall fescue.

    Question: core aeration before thatching or after? I’m about to start the process of getting my lawn truly “reel” ready and will be doing a leveling and seeding with KBG.

    Does anyone know of a good “time line” resource. There’s so many different steps to renovations, and a bunch of steps are better to be done before others, and at certain seasons. It would be really nice to have a reference guide that would tell a noob what steps they could be taking at any given time

    I planted grass every year and it looks good for about a month and then it dies when it rains so hard. It doesn’t seem like the area drains at all and it just kills the grass. Poor clay soil. I need to figure out what to do about that. I was thinking about getting that bio char humachar stuff that doc recommends.

    Great video as usual. My question is if I decide to smoke my front yard, will the nutsedge come back? Smoked my backyard two years ago and the nutsedge came back but it’s not as bunchy, more thin and spread out. I used Pete’s GCI Cool Blue blend. I would probably use that out front too but the damn nutsedge is killer. Funny part is I don’t NEED to renovate but evening out the soil is on my list. Thoughts? Lol

I can’t believe it keeps coming back. I aerate mechanically and with air8 and I dethatch. I water 2-3x a week at 3/4” each time during this crazy heat. Mind boggling lol

    Hey All! I’m just starting my lawn care journey after purchasing a new home here in Naperville, IL. I have a pretty basic question and hoping to get some help. The front lawn is pretty patchy and dormant with a boat load of weeds and or other types of grasses. If I didn’t want to do a full renovation, but rather top dress and overseed, when would I start that process? Do I have to wait until the spring? I’ll probably plan on doing this many times in order to eventually get all the same type of grass over time.
    Thanks in advance for any advice!!

    So the slopes you want to fill in isn't to get water away from his house and keep it from going into his neighbors house? Also if he is becoming a lawn care nut maybe see if he wants to put a sprinkler system in before killing the yard and leveling it.

    Hey Ryan, any tips on where I can get decent grass seed up here in Canada? We don’t have herbicides like you guys do across the border so I’m much more limited on products. I’d like to get some good grass seed down, but all I’m finding are your typical bag mixes from my local Home Depot 🤷🏼‍♀️

      The Lesco brand Double Eagle seed is a pretty good seed if you must go with Home Depot. It’s PRG blend, germinates in less than 10 days, giving you a nice cushion to do renovation or simple overseeding. Grows nice dark green color and you won’t have to worry about getting the weeds that come with trashy Scott’s seeds. Jonathan Green is another good seed jonathangreen.com You’ll also find very exceptional seed at seedsuperstore.com if you don’t want to go the homedepot route or jonathan green.
