    Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. George, I've been in the lawn care business for 15 years, and you see all kinds of outcomes. Whether it be competitors or friends that happen to be competitors, none the less, you have to improve form their mistakes and recognize your own if you want to make it. I cut grass in southern Ontario, Canada. Its a competitive market (believe it or not Yankees, lol) and you have to constantly observe what is driving your customers and future customers, to do business with you. I wish we could have had this youtube machine, years ago. Then again, think of all the fun we would have missed! Thanks again.

    Thanks for posting this. Bidding and pricing is hands down the most intimidating part for me as I am starting my first season.
    I got into this over the winter providing snow removal in my free time outside of my regular job. I ended up getting a pretty good deal on a package setup with a walker rider and some other gear but it's time to start making money!!! I've wanted to avoid calling competition for bid/pricing information because I find it rude, but I may have no choice. It's more important to my own success and market stability to not mistakenly loan all the completion. Ultimately no one wins when that happens.
    The basics are squared away, good equipment, insurance, some advertising products. I need to get vinyl on the trailer. Word of mouth from my snow removal is pulling in some clients already so that's good. I want to avoid employees until I have a foothold just to keep overhead down but eventually it will be a must.
    Anyway, thanks again for the info!

    I can relate to the whole equipment running out of oil issue. Employees will drive a machine until the wheels fall off unless they are truly caring or have a stake in a company. I recommend having one person that is on equipment duty every day checking belts, oil levels, and greasing fittings. 20-30 minutes of prevention maintenance goes such a long way. Especially with hydraulic equipment!

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 9 lety

    • @AZMDHI
      @AZMDHI Před 9 lety

      G Packard well said. $ pays for everything. no guy wants to be a stand on dude performing maintenance duties. It's each employees responsible duty to ensure the equipment is in proper order bd it mowers, whackers, or blowers. It's great practice to screen each employee and monitor them through your foreman. Your vids are awesome dude! Keep up the great work with your biz!

    Great job. Wow, you do monthly maintenance cheep. My minimum year round is $100 per month for bi weekly service and I only show up once a month October - February. My weekly customers pay me a minimum of $150 a month year round and I only show up once a month to clean up leaves October - February. Your area must be really competitive since you don't charge that much. I am a school teacher and profited over $40,000 doing lawn care on the side. Do the best job in the neighborhood and go after people who have money.

    If the potential client does not want to meet in person you could always do a quick drive by look and respond accordingly via email, or phone call. Ask friends and family what they or there friends pay to get a feel for your markets pricing bracket, but I wouldn't trick company's to come give you an estimate wasting there time just to find out pricing. good video

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 8 lety

      +Jeremy F
      Jeremy, don't think you have not been tricked at one time or another.0ne thing we have found is if they don't want to meet you then they generally are tire kickers. and if so we will google the place and email them an approx. quote. not an exact quote. and if there still interested then we'll request a face to face and discuss the specifics. 9 out of 10 times if they don't want to meet you won't get the job anyway.

    The money is made when you reduce drive times. The windshield time will kill any profits. You don't get paid to drive. If you lawns are spread out no matter what you charge it wont pencil out. Another BIG thing is weekly vs bi-weekly vs on-call. Weekly is obviously the best for your company, bi-weekly is more money and can get really long if the customer is irrigated, on-call is even more expensive because you cant include them in your routine. Most people want on-call or bi-weekly so my prices are always going to be inflated to cover those costs.

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 5 lety +1

      that is incorrect. if i have to drive farther i charge accordingly.

  • @beccaholloway7123
    @beccaholloway7123 Před 8 lety

    I wish everyone would look at pricing mowing like this. Pretend you get a call for a lawn mowing job . Your truck is on e your mower is out of gas . You have no mixed oil or gas for mix oil . Also you have no weedeatter string . Now also think about your equipment cost repair cost insurance taxes license fees . This method should wake you up to stop mowing grass for 20 or 25 bucks . Hell a locksmith charge 60 bucks in Tn to unlock your car . Lazy people dont want to do what we do charge them . Glad you post videos like this to help us all out . If everyone charges all our problems would be over . Well most anyway.

    $60 TO $70 a month, how many times do you mow it in one month at that price??

  • @markh3097
    @markh3097 Před 9 lety

    Gosh, so much good topics in this video! Do you have a sample % of cost/profit per property? Like 10% towards mowers, 7 % fuel, 15% is profit, etc....hope that makes sense

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 9 lety

      not really, i try not to over focus on those things, they can literally devour you over time. instead, focus on any way you can save yourself money. and find better ways to become more efficient, once you do that, your profit margin will grow considerably.as a rule today, i try to end up around 20 % net profit. hope this helps

    Once you give your quote on a lawn, if the customer thinks it is high and wants an explanation, what do you do? Do you break it down like: hourly rate $x, shrub edging $x ea, etc?

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 10 lety +1

      A lot of customers think the price is high , and a lot of times they are telling you this because there either trying to get you to go lower, or it's because the person they previously had did it for much less. Either way, don't let this bother you.Her's the simple truth. you have to make enough $ to pay your bills, and your self, and then hopefully turn a profit for your business. Back to there previous guy, ask them why he's not there anymore, then tell them that you get what you pay for.Chances are the guy lost his biz. because he wasn't charging enough. Don't let that be you! Your in biz. to stay in biz. Instead sell them on why your more $. EXAMPLE : 1. Dependable,insurance,licensed,honest,trustworthy ect. Don't break down your prices for anyone, it's none of there biz. Also and probably more important than anything else in this situation is you don't want this customer anyway, because they are a low baller client, and these people generally do the most complaining and quickly become a headache you don't need. In closing tell them this, if you want cheap lawn care,get used to calling guys like me(on a regular basis) because that's all your ever going to get ! If you have further questions, email me on off my web site and leave me your. #, I'll call you back.
      George

      In one of your videos you talked about one of your trucks that was 90k. Do they make a smaller cheaper version possibly? Sounded like cab truck with tilt flatbed? Just seems like a great convenience

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 10 lety

    Hey, thanks for the advice. I may need a tip or to from you on this.... I'm currently helping my Dad with his lawn business while I'm in college and he pays me $20 for each of his clients yards and he'll keep the rest of the profit. Not knowing that my business would slowly branch of his because other people see me cutting their neighbors and need cuts really bad. I've unexpectedly ended up having my on small lawn business 5 clients so far. I charge them all $40 a cut bi weekly so 80 a month for all clients. Sometimes I'll get a worker or two and pay $20 for one worker if I'm helping or $10 a piece each yard if I have 2 workers cutting my clients yard. Some clients want raking leaves. Should I charge extra for raking leaves and how much because I have to pay my business partners as well?

    One question:
    65-70/mo covers weekly service?
    I’m in Jax, Fl and $35 per mow (basic service) seems to be the average for an average property.

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 6 lety
