    I don't have a website...yet. I'm a one man operation. I have signs on my truck, I have magnet business cards that look like my truck sign with my cell number on it. I leave them around town at my barber shop and places I eat. The cards have helped me so much...Also when I was mulching the leaves on my regular clients lawns their neighbors came out and had me get their leaves. They wound up telling me come back in the spring and take care of my lawn for me. You give good advice and motivation. I'm enjoying the down time...but I'm getting the itch for lawn season to start.

    This is a good one. I started a lawn care business this last July, not a great time to start i know. I'ts an owner operator business , hopefully an L.L.C. with an employee or another crew in 2018. Being the face and operator of the business it's important to be a good salesman. I'm not a natural. I'm older and a long time retail manager so i have some advantage but still not a great sales person. So important to have an approachable professional appearance and sales acumen. This is a great video, your right on.

    This vid was awesome! Thank you, I appreciate your time doing these videos considering how busy you must be with your businesses. I have found myself coming back to lawn maintenance once again, because 1.) I have been doing it at one point or another in my life since my late teens. 2.) Was sick of the corporate grind so I took a job for grounds keeper at a local resort. (Boy was THAT refreshing!! From cubicle to the sunshine and I lost 30 lbs! LOL!) and 3.) Am currently putting together all the final pieces of going out solo because I am just tired of working for other people.
    Hearing your perspective as an owner is invaluable for someone like me because I am no spring chicken, but still have the drive to do this and your vids are answering a lot of questions I have been mulling over in my mind. So, again, thank you!

      Sponsored ads to my route area. $20.00 reaches 5,000-10,000 people in my town in two weeks time, with about 400-1000 clicks. Way better analytics than a website (in my experience/service area)

    I built my own website. Have it set up on google ads. I get a lot of calls, emails, texts but the majority of them are people who want one time only, overgrown, and they're often 10-20 miles away. I don't mind going to do a big job if its a little far out, but it's gotta be worth my time and gas. These people are looking for a miracle for cheap.

    A lettered truck is a must it's the best advertising you can get. Just remember you have to do the best work possible when your truck has your name on it. Trust me the neighbors are watching. My trucks are the best advertising I have done. I no longer pass out flyers or business cards. My trucks do it for me. I have concentrated clumps of properties due to my work and my trucks. My trucks are work trucks but get the job done.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. I am considering a startup for this spring for my son and I to supplement my income and give him some great beginner entrepreneurial experience and cash as well. Wow there really is a lot to consider. Anything worth doing is worth doing right. Cliché saying maybe, but after this video I can now add insurance to my list of must haves. We live in a town of 3k which is adjacent to a city of 70k in Arkansas. I plan on going into the city and working primarily there. I know the work is there. I also know there is 50 other companies there doing the same thing. We are particular people and we'll do good work. I personally have a diverse occupational background. We'll see. Keep these videos comin', and thanks again.

    Happy Holidays George, I like the part about references. I get many good comments about my work but I rarely translate that to more work for other people. I got people who are always referring me who would probably be happy to write a reference, just never thought of asking. Should I offer a deal or just see what the response is? I would say that as a 1 truck operator it is hard to get to an estimate immediately. I usually do them in the morning before the potential client goes to work or when they get home. I can't just stop in the middle of my day. Your a treasure trove of info. Please keep us all learning from your experience.

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 7 lety

      first just ask. at least do this, ask them their address. it may be close enough you could go there right away, but if not then set a meeting asap. keep trying and keep learning.

    Great video. Sales expert here. Whenever possible, get any decision makers in front of you at the same time. Eliminates the I have to run it by my wife excuse. And.... That's exactly what it is, an excuse. You might try the following: I can appreciate that, so in other words, you're comfortable with our company, confident in our services, it's JUST that you have to talk to the wife, is that correct?
    **Customer " yes"
    Ok, fair enough, let me ask you a question, and please, understand, this could never happen, but what if, just what if, I told you that we could take care of your lawn for $10 a month! You'd be on board then wouldn't you?!
    ** Customer: well, yes of course, haha
    So, if I understand correctly, it's NOT, that you need to speak to your wife, it really boils down to the price, doesn't it?
    Mr customer, I know exactly how you feel. Most of my customers have felt the same way as you!
    Would you like to know what they found out? There are many, many companies that can beat us on price, but NONE on value, and that's why we offer ( insert value added items here, edging, etc etc) with every job, as well as a satisfaction guarantee! Listen, why don't you let me worry about the yard work, and you either go golfing, or enjoy the family! You work hard all week don't you?!
    Here, we have isolated the objection " think about it", or " talk to spouse", and narrowed it down to the price. The customer can't with any credibility object to anything other than price at this point! ( BTW Start high!) You can always discount if you have to...
    Lastly, we painted a picture of him hanging out in the easy chair all summer, ( hence giving him an EMOTIONAL) reason to buy. People buy on emotion.
    Lastly, ASK for the order! Assume he's buying!! As if this is completely normal, and what he should be doing.
    " Mr Smith, when I return in the morning, did you want the hedges trimmed, or wait on those until next week?"

      you have to be competitive with your area. we usually charge
      $45 per hour per man. Hauling away debris is extra.

    Great advice hey George what is a flat rate in Florida for you in residential yard thanks

    • @GPackard
      @GPackard  Před 7 lety

      believe it or not, it varies by neighborhood. for example a poorer one = say $25 per cut while the richer ones = $35 per cut. these are very small lots, and just examples.

      no money = no honey brother. lol what i would do is try and save money this year so maybe next year you can start the biz. or if you don't want to wait , go to the bank and get a loan for $25,000. or get a credit card with a $25,000 limit and lets get going ? you may not need all $25,000 depending on what you already have. If your serious about joining we need to talk so give us a call. I have an older van all set up for spraying i could sell you cheap to help you get started, but let me know soon as i have another guy i also told about it.
