  • The Pecos Wilderness, Episode 10 - Pecos Baldy to Truchas to Beatty Flats Loop was a 33 mile hike that took 5 days. I camped at Pecos Baldy Lake on night one & two, and Truchas Lakes for night three, and along the Beatty Trail for the final night. Day four, I hiked up to a pass from where I tried to climb Middle Truchas Peak (13,066 ft in elevation), but I was stopped by technical terrain. Day five, I stopped by the historic Beatty's Cabin. I saw an incredible amount of wildlife and scenic beauty. It was a beautiful trip and an adventure in the Santa Fe, National Forest of New Mexico.

I did this hike in 1978, it was greener and far less people back then…

Great job, thanks for sharing your trip! I did the same loop back in 2017 minus the peak bagging, I'm too out of shape for that :)

Stupendous video John! You captured Pecos Baldy Lake and East Pecos Baldy perfectly.
I saw that same species of small yellow bird at East Pecos Baldy Lake about tree weeks earlier. Do you know what is is? The wildlife there is prolific if one is patient. There is a hawk that "owns" that lake. He or she dive bombed me twice in two days; silently swooping directly at you 6' overhead is amazing.
Your filming technique has greatly improved from your first efforts. Your style appears easy and relaxed. You are a very good storyteller. It is obvious you are having a great time. I'm sure a 4K camera is on your wish list.
I have really enjoyed this series on the Pecos Wilderness with the in-depth trail, wildlife, plant and campsite information. Please keep them coming. Looking forward to seeing some fall colored aspens.

Thank you so much! Your positive comments are definitely urging me on. My main camera does shoot in 4K, but my zoom for wildlife does not. I can use additional zoom lenses for my main camera though, but long lenses are heavy to carry. I am glad that you're enjoying the series.

Oh, I almost forgot, that little yellow bird is a Wilson's Warbler.

I was up there in August, and I love it up there. The sound of your fire cracking transported me from my office to the woods. :) Very peaceful. Thanks for the video and the extensive trail report. It'll sure help us prepare for our return in late October

    Everything incredible
But the Music by the Marmets was kind of dark to showcase the awesome beauty up by Baldy Lake
I would pick some more upbeat musical tones myself
Other than that just amazing video

Fantastic video again! Love all the wildlife shots, too. My only criticism is that when you are standing in front of a beautiful scene and talking to camera, you should stand either left or right.. never stand dead center in front of what you are trying to show the viewer. Other than that, great job! Yes, you are helping us plan our future trips also... your details about campsites and water sources are invaluable. Thanks again.

Thank you for the feedback. It's exactly what I'm looking for. I think that I also need to lay off the close-up face shots. They make me cringe when I see them. I'll keep trying to make every new video just a little better each time.

I’m not sure why the horse trail and hiking ones are different. I take the horse one up to bypass those 4 switch backs on the hiking one.

I’d say north Truchas is best climbed straight up the grass slope.
