When Airfix first introduced the Mark 2D's in the 1970's, only the first class and brake were produced. I remember the second class coaches being released several years later and reportedly, no-where near as many were produced. This is why there are significantly more first class than second class open coaches around. Hornby subsequently took these models over and applied a significantly better livery. I'm on the lookout for Hornby versions of the Mark 2D second open!
I love Airfix Coaches. I collect the Maroon ones and the blood & custard ones for my layout. I don't buy many, I have a few for my layout when I start it later this year. I have a couple of the LAVs as well. For thier age, the detail is brilliant.
👏👍☘ Well Done ,The "Great" Hattons of Liverpool offered these excellent models as Bargains (+ One extra) if a number were purchased. I was lucky to have availed of many and run them in a variety of consists,. they 'couple' beautifully to all continental locomotives too!
Listening to you talking about the 2nd class inter-city carriages makes me laugh.. I have 4 of them and only 1 of the 1st class..... I'm in Melbourne Australia... I have bought all of my carriages and locos 2nd-hand, from ebay/marketplace/gumtree I can't afford new ones and don't know how they can justify the prices they ask for new items.. it is crazy.
Australia never had this problem; as stock was not on a quota system; in either Australia or New Zealand. In fact I got 4 (brand new) 2nd Class Mk2 D's from a shop in Adelaide.

I have 3 of the mainline RBRs... flush glazed them & 14mm disc wheels...look much better than the new Hornby one
That explains why I have three first and only one second class coaches.
