Peart was one of the greatest drummers of all time. This song gets even crazier when you think about the fact that when performing live, Geddy Lee is playing bass, keyboard and singing....

Rush always "takes it to another level." Then after that level, they take another and another and another. They never stop. There music is deep, simple and complex at the same time, poetic, rich, powerful, and it tells a story that you can listen to and enjoy in a meaningful way. Each of the three members are amazing musicians, and in most bands, each of their parts would be considered a solo. Geddy Lee as one example in Rush, that plays the rhythm of a song as though it were a solo. They each do that. If you break each of their parts down, nobody is just background noise. Each of their instruments have their own real thing to tell you throughout their songs.

Just loved that, "back from the future" comment. Drummer Neil Peart was the main lyricist for the band and yes, it usually takes a few listens to "crack the code" as to the songs' meaning. I always felt that the song was a recognition of the "new" generations' ability to stride confidently through life, dealing with it on its' own terms. WELL DONE!! 🏆

Firstly, kudos to Domenika for knowing that Tom Sawyer is a character in a famous classic American novel. Sadly, I've watched many reactions to this song by American millenials who had no clue. In the novel Tom is a young boy living in antebellum (prior to the American Civil War) Missouri. He frequently gets into trouble because of his mischievous and non-conformist nature. This song's lyrics imagine what Tom would be like if he lived in the current age (that is, in the time when the song was written).

They played everything just as they played on their albums, which was a rare thing to find in those days. Please react to Xanadu (live 1981), La Villa Strangiato, Limelight, Spirit of the Radio, Subdivisions, 2112, Necromancer, and I could go on. I promise they will blow you away!

"Chaos that makes sense" is actually a perfect way to describe Rush.
A lot of that ordered chaos comes from Neil Peart. Rush songs frequently use unusual time signatures, and switch those signatures more than most bands. And he was capable of keeping different, independent rhythms with each of his four limbs.

"Chaos that makes sense,,," This is a description that goes a long ways towards describing Rush's music to someone who has not heard them. Rush fans keep listening because it is the talent and precision of the individuals that allow for the recognition of the guiding underlying composition. Lesser musicians would never emerge from the from the pieces to create a whole like Alex, Geddy and Neil could.

Yes, Neil Peart, the writer of the song, was an avid reader and got a lot of his concepts from books. I would say there is some connection to the book because in the book Tom Sawyer did not always follow the conventions of the times and did not want to always let people tell him what to think.

Great reaction. With Rush expect the unexpected. Three master musician that's love rock and jazz so that why they don't do just a solo the three make a jam in Thiers songs and shows the clases of musician that they are.
Geddy Lee fast with the bass played with the fingers not with a pick, Alex using all this knowledge to make new sounds and The Profesor Neil.... Well he always changes The beat from a 4/4 to 7/4 and back a melodic and caotic solo trio that make each song More powerful.
You must react to Freewill, Xanadu and 2112 ( a 20 minuts song with 7 movement. The best video Is in cómic version and after yo reacts yo the studio version reacts to live version and you will be speachless.

Your fist comment about the song being complex is spot on. Geddy Lee (the singer/bassist) in one interview (actually I think it was a CZcams video) said that any song not in 4/4 time gets points in his book and you can really feel that in everything rush does. The rhythm changes so smoothly you barely notice that you've already changed with it. They switch time signatures so often in this song it's hard to count.

For me the lyrics were about the youth of the day (early 1980s). Tom Sawyer is a character from Mark Twain's novel and he was a rural, bare footed boy from an earlier, pre technology time. For me, today's Tom Sawyer was very different and the reference to the "space he invades" refers to the popular video game of the time "Space Invaders". I have never analyzed the lyrics much more than that but I believe it has to do with the youth of the time, as I said. Some people may have more info, but that is how I always interpreted the lyrics.

Based on Kubla Khan (Xanadu) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. On being fully awake, he wrote the poem down. The theme of the poem is unimportant. It describes the palace built by Kubla Khan, the grandson of Chengis Khan, the great rule of central Asia.

Geddy’s mother was born in Warsaw and escaped from Auschwitz, his dad was born in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski. They emigrated to Canada and his dad changed the family name to Weinrib and Geddy was born Gary Lee Weinrib. His mum still had her very thick accent, and when Geddy was out playing with friends, she would call him for dinner. She was yelling “ Gary” but because of her accent, his friends heard “ Geddy “. Soon everyone called him Geddy so when he formed the band he legally changed his name to Geddy Lee. Alex Lifeson was born Aleksandar Zivojinovic, his parents were Serb immigrants from Yugoslavia.

Neil Peart is a modern day philosopher.
It rarely occurs to us common folk to think about society, civilization, human nature and the meaning of life. It's a philosophers calling to enlighten the masses and help answer questions that we think about at some point in our lives. Unfortunately, fewer and fewer people question anything today making philosophy boring and meaningless compared to Netflix and all the distractions we've become addicted to.

Rush's trick was all 3 were college music majors (And you learn to play every genre to earn your grade)with BIG imaginations--By thier 2nd LP with Drummer Peart, they had that progressive-rock meets sci-fi sound down. Then add the years and thousands of shows/reharsals they did en route, they got tight enough to "read" each other mentally--A true definition of the word Teamwork.

I spent my twenties listening to Rush, Styx, Kansas and other American prog rock bands with the occasional side trip into heavier rock like Heart, Sabbath, Priest. Then I got bored with music for a decade or more until my son introduced me to European metal. Never looked back, it is nice to revisit these bands once in a while but they are nowhere near as good as the metal bands. great reaction, keep rocking.

"But they are nowhere near as good as the metal bands." that's called an opinion, not a statement of fact. Here's mine, Rush is the greatest band of all time and the best musicians to ever grace a stage and way better than any European metal band.

@@Fred-vy1hm Like you said, an opinion and not intended as anything more. Mine is Rush is a great band, but my taste gravitated to a heavier sound, and too many of their songs become just a reason to wander around musically and lacked cohesion. I feel that for a musician, Rush is the ultimate because they play around, but for someone just listening for entertainment bands like Kamelot, Symphony X, Leave's Eyes, and Opeth give you a more complete story. Like most things, music taste varies.

The drummer (Neil Peart....pronounced Peeer-tuh), is arguably the greatest rock drummer of all time. AND, he wrote about 95% of all the RUSH lyrics. Geddy Lee (bass & keyboards) and Alex Lifeson (guitar) wrote the music. Greatest 3 pc band of all time. As always, RIP to "The Professor". Oh, and the song was released in 1981.
