The Canadian music scene was dynamic and talented in the 70's and 80's, but was mostly kept in the shade. Even today the maples are more shaded than the mighty oaks.🌳

I love this whole album, Hemispheres (1978), one of the top albums for me, but of course I love everything Rush does. The Trees is a really cool song, I love how Geddy sings it and this live performance is even greater than the album version for me. La Villa Strangiato is the next logical song to listen to, it's right after The Trees on the album and it's also one of their best works, an instrumental even. Rush does for you what it does for me, I'm sure of it! lol 😄 Rush has opened my listening style and experience with music.

What makes the lyrics of The Trees so good is that they tell a story that's clearly an allegory, without it being at all clear what the moral of the story is. I've heard it interpreted in many ways, and have about a half-dozen of my own. But in the end, the message of all of them is that we need to figure out a balance to things consciously; because if we don't, like in nature, the balance will be restored in ways that don't pay any heed to the lives of the individuals involved. In short, think about balance, or people will die as a consequence.

Rush... your favorite band's favorite band! You could say that instead of just writing music, they compose it. Every note of every instrument, every word, every pause... very deliberate and has meaning. I've been listening since 1982, and they still affect me with how profound they are.
I would suggest the studio version of "2112" to react to because it is in it's origional form and it is performed as they were when they created it. They are awesome live, but to get the full effect of this masterpiece, i believe it is best experienced in it's origional form.

Heh, yeah I knew this would be controversial. Some people like how the comic book version hand-holds the reactor through it, others figure that they should work it on out their own, and/or that the comic book portrayal cheapens the story. I think it'll be OK whatever she does, however, in the end it's still 2112.

Or you could say this song was about jealously, or the inevitable failure of regulation, or you could say this was about how enforced equality is destined to fail. Except that when asked what the metaphor or allegory in this song really was, Neil Peart said it was just a song about trees! If you want a still-timely song about social injustice, check out "Witch Hunt." Amazing!

You’ll appreciate the Garden - but be prepared that it has an element of sentimentality to it.
It was the last song on their last studio album and has a very moving message.
It will MOVE you… and maybe bring on a tear… as it did with me when I saw them for the very last time (saw them 5 or 6 times) before Neil’s passing.
It was a perfect swan song.
I really like your Rush reactions and it impresses me that you have gravitated to Rush so intensely. Reminds me of… ME!
My life was changed when I first heard the Spirit of Radio… early in the wee hours of the morning on my paper route in 1980.
I heard the song in a block of songs… so when they didn’t announced the song title, I raced home and called the radio station - because I HAD TO KNOW who performed it.
They influenced my life in many ways. I know it is hard to listen to the trees for the 1st time and get the lyrics so I would urge you to listen to it again - studying the lyrics… because they are brilliant.
Rush is certainly “essential listening” - to my musical taste.

Geddy had a lot of triggers he liked to play with.. at the end, probably a shout out to his pups, rip dear fur babies... always loved seeing Alex with his tele, rumor was he wrote a lot of music on it. Can't wait for 2112, but i think my favorite period was A Fairwell to Kings through Moving Pictures. Love everything (well almost) they did but that period was just them at their best before tragedy struck. They have such a deep library, and why they are the soundtrack to my life.

Thank you for this one. I was one of the people who requested it and this particular performance. I feel The Trees doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. I’ve always seen it as a metaphor for class struggle. The “hatchet, axe and saw” could mean death as we are all equal in the eyes of the Grim Reaper.
Then there is the metaphor about Canada (I’m Canadian) and the USA.
On another note, I still have my original vinyl of 2112 and I was listening to it yesterday.

“For example, when these virtuoso artists on violin, viola, cello, and double-bass executed David’s plangent orchestration for ‘The Garden,’ there was not a dry eye in the studio.” Neil Peart

  • @lindaward5376
    @lindaward5376 Před měsícem +2

Back in the 1970s, and up until Exit Stage Left, Neil would use actual wood blocks as part of an entire percussion kit also consisting of tubular bells, chimes, and a few other instruments; in later years, he'd simply trigger those sounds on his electeic drum kit, which IMO just doesn't sound the same. If you'd like to hear the original percussion sounds, I'd like to recommend Closer To The Heart, either the official music video or the Exit Stage Left performance, whose lyrics also carry an important message. Have a wonderful evening, and Rush on!

2112, the album was a turning point , it came after Caress of Steel, which was not well received. The record Co. wanted them making radio frendly songs, but the band decided were doing it our way, after 2112 the record co. never bothered RUSH again.

I grew up in eastern Toronto at a time when Rush was one of the sought-after bands we got to play at our high school. Rarely saw them live after that until in the 90s when I saw them again in Toronto, where they pretty much liquified my insides at the Air Canada center. It was really bad accoustics, but I do love the band, as many songs reflected growing up in suburbia at that time. I have also become a Nightwish fan more recently.

2112 was the first Rush song I heard. I was so blown away and awe inspired. I went out and bought the album. That was in 1978. Instant Rush fan. Trees is one of top 5 favorite songs. Other great songs on the 2112 album Passage to Bangkok & Tears. ❤‍🔥🌳🌲🤘

One of my favorites and the song which taught me they had a twisted sense of humor!
I used to sing it as a lullaby to my sons when they were young :)

Rush has music that everyone can listen to, but it's how their music is heard is where you could see a difference in the age of listeners. There is so much thought and detail put into the music that I think you could discover something different at every listen, but it could become an attention overload for some.

2112 will feature the screechier side of Geddy's voice, but the complex story makes up for that. There is an excellent video version on CZcams portraying it as an animated comic strip. It doesn't detract from the music at all, and I think it helps convey the story .

I love how you show your enthusiasm for Rush's music, just like I did in the mid-eighties when I discovered them and they changed my perception of music. Keep exploring, you won´t regret.

    OK, Lets GOOO !
Don't be worried about 2112, its just like watching a great movie, or reading a wonderful book.
Tree's - One of Rush's shortest songs, but don't let that fool you.....still awesome. Lyrics and story telling.....just magic.
I prefer the studio version for this song, make sure you give it a listen for your own enjoyment.
    Cheerz!!!!

What I love most about this song: notice how in the first verse the Maples say the Oaks are just too lofty, but in the final verse the Oaks are just too GREEDY. The result is hatchet axe and saw wrecking everyone

So fired up to see you're going to do 2112! Again the original version off the album is the one you should do with the animation video. You get the entire song with the words, it's really awesome the way they did it! You can always do live versions after you here the album version, but they leave out parts of the song when they do it live. You shouldn't feel pressure! It's RUSH! They make life beautiful!

Rush music and lyrics is timeless in my mind, it's music I was captivated by at age 13 and still am at 58 and to my mind's ears it still sounds as fresh and interesting and has not dated like classical music, it will never get beyond its sell by date as it does not have one being pretty unique.

Wait until you get to Live at Dallas - "Clockwork Angles" concert. They're much older and seasoned and accompanied be strings. Geddy's voice isn't as high but still cuts to the soul. That entire show will leave you speechless.

Neil’s lyrics always make you think. Is this truly about trees fighting for the sunlight or is it metaphorically talking about equal rights. I think Neil liked to leave it up to the listener’s to decipher. That’s what makes his writing so interesting and insightful. We’re never going to see that kind of lyrics in today’s music and that’s kinda of sad.
