• RUSH - Closer To The H... - Zábava
Rush...the world's smallest symphony orchestra.
Best description ever!
This performance is the epitome of multitasking and incredible musicianship. It is truly astounding to think that all that sound is coming from only three people. There will never be another band like Rush!
@@gregcormier2379 - I totally agree! 😍 The fact that both Geddy and Alex also play synths with their feet while playing their double-necks most likely flies under most viewers' 📡! 😁
Just too bad the camera crew had failed to get some good angles towards the end of Geddy after switching to his 12-string guitar!
Many other cool moments in this video though, like Alex' swift switch from 12- to 6-string 😊
And their jostling-around had even delighted my two Sons already when they were only little 😄
A day without “the boys” is like a day without sunshine!!
RUSH FOREVER!!
From one RUSH CHICK to another!! 🤘🎶💜
"Rush makes every other band look lazy." Wow, what an incredibly accurate statement! That was a joy to watch with you, neighbor. Thanks for listening to the small people. You rock, sister!! The only way that could've been better is if I was......never mind. 😉 Til next time...
@@snakeinthegrass7443 😊
"RUSH makes every other band look Lazy". That's the most insightful comment I've ever heard on any reaction! 🏆
One of the best performances by any band, ever. RUSH was one of the best performing bands of all time. I was fortunate to have been able to see 18 of their concerts over the years. Never ever disappointing. Always EPIC performance, EPIC shows .. RIP Neil Peart, we miss you!
Three best friends having fun together.
Small bit of trivia - Xanadu was recorded in one take! ;-)
Despite its complexity and length, Xanadu is a rare "one take wonder" song. Guitarist Alex Lifeson said, "Xanadu was well rehearsed before going to Rockfield, I remember that. On the day we recorded it, Pat Moran, the resident engineer, set all the mics up and we ran the song down, partially to get balances and tones. Because it was a long song, we didn't need to complete that test run.
"We then played it a second time from top to bottom and that's what you hear on the album. Needless to say, Pat was shocked that we ran an 11-minute song down in one complete take. Practice doesn't always make perfect, but it sure helps!
This is the gold standard of live performances. Nothing else compares.
One absolutely mind-blowing fact about this song is when they were ready to record the Xanadu track you hear on the Farewell To Kings album, Geddy, Alex and Neil walked in, played a minute or two to calibrate all the sound equipment, then played the song start to finish in 1 take, nailed it 100%, walked out, no second attempt needed. Absolute kings, only 24-25 years old back then and already world-class musicians.
Can't ever see/hear Xanadu too many times :)
This song is on my top 10 all time best rock songs. It is always fun when a reactor recognizes how great it is. Kudos to our RHN!
Xanadu is based on an unfinished poem by 19th century English poet Samuel Taylor Coolidge
It's ''Kubla Khan'' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. A poem written from the memory of an opium induced dream.
Greatest power trio and best live performers period. So sad that the greatest show on earth could only bless us with a little over forty years of magnificence they're so missed.
A lot of folks don’t stop to realize just how hard Neil pounded his kit. Such a strong, masterclass performance from all of them here - the dynamics are fantastic for a live show. One of my all time faves! ✌🏻
People back when, that didn't like RUSH, had no clue what they were missing . It's not until the internet, CZcams, Instagram that these guys are getting their due !!! I saw them many times here in Pittsburgh. This particular tour was amazing !!!!
This is a performance that always brings tears to my eyes, when I watch someone witness it for the first time. I suffer from an affliction called empathy, so when I see you and others become overwhelmed with their greatness, it brings just as much joy to me. When you listen to 2112, and I know you will, there's one produced as a comic book version, wherein you'll be able to read the lyrics and story elements as was included in the original album sleeve. Be prepared for top notch performances by all three, even by their standards.
Neil Peart absolute drumming genius
What a great reaction. Yes, Rush is arguably the best rock band ever. They do make most other bands seem lazy.
Pretty redhead was having eargasms so beautiful to watch . Redhaired Chefs kiss 😍❤️
One of the most epic performances…, ever!
Hi 'Red', my friend, I absolutely love your reaction to this EPIC. THIS PERFORMANCE is ABSOLUTELY FLAWLESS; ABSOLUTE PERFECTION musicianship. When you mentioned '...chef's kiss...'; here's some food for thought. This song has been in concert setlists since A Farewell to Kings tour back in late '77/early '78, then during Hemispheres tour, Permanent Waves tour and now this Moving Pictures tour; through the years of, call it 1978 - 1981. Do the math, this 12 minute song has been performed probably hundreds of times by the time of this EXIT...STAGE LEFT video concert. Hence, again, PERFECTION. I've watched this video so many times on CZcams, and I also have EXIT...STAGE LEFT on VHS & DVD; so even more views. I, too, am ABSOLUTELY MESMERIZED by this performance. HOW MUCH I LOVE THESE GUYS ! Take care my friend.
Welcome to your first RUSH epic. Every Rush album from 1974 Fly By Night up until Signals, and at least on epic song. As an original Rush fan I consider these the golden years. These are the songs that separate RUSH from all other bands.
Don't let Xanadu be your last foray into the epics.
Spot On, she should try Bytor and the Snowdog and hear how good they got immediately with Neal Peart on drums/lyrics, 1st epic of many, good start to their journey.
@@scott4482 it just enhanced my thirst
@@scott4482 - She may still also enjoy Rush post-'Signals', though!
In fact, my _own_ very first impression of their music (in '89, at 19) had been the album that followed it, 'Grace Under Pressure'! And already its opener, 'Distant Early Warning' had me hooked instantly to Rush 😀 And for life, as it would turn out 😊
'Permanent Waves' through to 'Counterparts' are _my_ favourite Rush albums 🙂
Before you read the lyrics, check out the poem "Kubla Khan" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge from the 19th century; Neil created the lyrics to this song based upon the poem. It's long, but explains this song
This is widely considered to be THE greatest prog-rock song ever. And of course, from one of the originators of the genre and one of the greatest lyracists ever. RIP, "Professor".
You want lyrics?? Two words... "Entre Nous" from Permanent Waves... Best love song EVER!!
One of the beautiful things about Rush is how their musical style evolved over the years (and yet they kept creating heartfelt amazing music). The mid-to-late 1980s is referred to as "Synth Era" and one of my favorite songs from that time span is Lock and Key. Check it out!
I have said it many times, but it rings true to me... RUSH is to MUSICIANSHIP what THE BEATLES are to SINGING!
Thank you my dear!! I found your channel following RUSH reactions videos There my favorite band and I love seeing new fans fall in love with them. Your reactions always put a smile on my face. I'm 57 and been listening to them my whole life. Cheers from Ontario Canada.
Agreed. My 1st concert was Rush at the Montreal Forum on March 31, 1978 on the A Farewell To Kings tour. I'm 62 and have been a fan since that show.
@@paulgreenhalgh1647 thank you so very much
@@markchristie7031 what a treat!!
@@redheadedneighbor The real treat was the price; $7.99!! When I saw them on their Farewell Tour in Minneapolis in 2015, the ticket was $115.00.
Now you’ve done it! This is reaching music perfection.
My introduction to Rush was in 74 they played my high school for a school assembly. I have seen them 9 times since and have seen them perform this song 3 times , this by far is the best version. All 3 are goats. What a full sound for just 3 maestro's all of them at the top of their game here. Canada Rocks!!!!!!
Been listening since 1983 dear, welcome to the club. And yes Xanadu from Exit Stage Left is great. You enjoyed Neils fills like we all do, they dont call him The Professor for nothing. Rush were masters of time sig changes, nobody makes them sound cohesive like they do. It really is amazing and you dont see anyone trying to play this stuff. Your reactions are priceless, keep em coming please.

One of the big stars of this performance is the video editor. Hats off to whoever managed to document the manifold roles of each band member so we can see an accurate representation of how they constructed this full spectrum of sound; especially at key ensemble moments, transitions, etc.
Yes, totally agree, the blink and you miss him flash video editing sucks, these guys, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin have quality video Editing as well, it is nice to see key band members at the right time.
This was a TV special produced by the CBC
@@katskillz - I do mostly agree, but they also forgot to get some good shots of Geddy playing his 12-string at the end! 😅
They were my first concert in 1976. I fell in love immediately, I saw this tour in Mobile in 1981, they were on one of many peaks. You should know something, they would have appreciated you. You listen with the passion they wrote and performed with. You genuinely seem to get them which is not as common as their fans these days. Bravo!
My first in 1979 - Hemispheres, but I had been a fan since I heard 2112 in the band room after school one day in 1976
Greetings once again from San Diego's resident Rushoholic. This version of Xanadu came a few years after the original studio release on their 5th original studio album A FAREWELL TO KINGS from 1977. You might try that version along with the rest of that album on your channel. Xanadu is considered by myself and others as their finest song. By the 5th album, most bands are toast. Rush were just getting warmed up in the early phases of their career. The drums were still all acoustic with numerous effects some of which appeared quite readily in this concert such as orchestra bells, wood blocks and wind chimes. Geddy only used his double neck for this song. The lower neck (for a right handed player such as Geddy) is a 6 string electric guitar that only compliments Alex for the handful bars that finish the piece. Then Geddy's double neck goes back in its case.
What's remarkable here is that the live performance is, by its nature, done in a single take after years of performances. Equally remarkable was how this was produced originally in studio. Xanadu was a new song which they ran through once to find the best microphone set up. The next take was the only other with no studio dubs for the instruments. The vocals were overdubed later as usual. Geddy turns 71 on July 29th. He and Alex were both 27 in this video. Neil was 28. Rush makes every other band seem lazy.
Just remember to not seem lazy, but to stay classy...
Alex's switch from the 12 string to the 6 at around 12:11 here never ceases to amaze me.
Yup, amazing!
The key to their early stuff, for me, is how they were essentially storytellers. The music and lyrics both served one thing: the story. The beginning, especially, evokes a traveller making his way through a woods with the sounds of nature all around. Once the traveller finally finds Xanadu, there’s a big crash of all the instruments to indicate the wonder. Their first 6 albums, for me, are impeccable works of magic.
I literally can't help but get choked up listening to this. They were and will always be such a HUGE part of my journey as a musician and bassist. Miss the boys from up north more than I can possibly say.
Basically three great musicians. I've always thought Rush were very quirky in their song writing and I mean that in a good way. You never know where a song is going to go next but it always works.
You just witnessed the best live performance ever. RUSH has 175+ songs, it's a deep catalog but you won't regret going down the Rush rabbit hole. The best band ever in the universe
I must have seen this video at least 20 times. Never bored.
Both Geddy and Alex use the Moog Taurus pedals on this song while playing their guitars.
My first dip into RUSH was the Necromancer the second was Xanadu, the third was Hemispheres. ALL was the best RUSH.
Actually I thought that Xanadu had the most time signature changes but it was actually La Villa Strangiato- a lot of 5/8, 7/8 and 9/8.
Brilliant reaction to an amazing song
The greatest 3 piece band to ever walk the earth and I truly miss them..... rest in peace Neil
Another great one from Rush is natural science live at the Molson Amphitheater 1997. For me it's on the same level performance as Xanadu exit stage left. You've got to check this one out. I'm not the only one who will suggest Natural Science. In my opinion the 1997 Molson Amphitheater performance is there best rendition of it. I really enjoy watching your reactions to rush. It's been such a pleasure. Thank you.
Believe it or not, there are Still many badass RUSH songs to go! This one is at the top of the list of the best. Simply incredible song.
How lovely to start my Thursday with that amazing song and such a wonderful reaction to it!
😊🙏💚🌈☀️🎵🍀🦋🌻
Some lyrics that get me emotional every single time: Losing it, Witch hunt, Vital signs, Red sector A (About the holocaust), Middletown dreams, The pass (Teenage suicide) and my favourite Available light. That last one just rips my heart every time since Neil’s passing. Please check these songs with the lyrics nearby. Brilliant writing.
Great choices. Especially “Available Light”, such an amazing song.
For me, ''Losing It'' is the single most poignant song that Neil ever wrote. The Hemmingway connection where the writer, realising he was losing his faculties and ability to write, took his own life early one morning in his kitchen:-
''Thirty years ago, how the words would flow
With passion and precision
But now his mind is dark and dulled
By sickness and indecision
And he stares out the kitchen door
Where the sun will rise no more''
It's just my interpretation, but I feel that Neil probably had a recurring dream as we all do, of the fear of this happening to him that prompted him to write this lyric, and it is incredibly sad that he was taken too soon with exactly the type of terrible debilitating illness that he alluded to in this song. An incredibly powerful lyric that came from a dark corner of his fertile mind.
Hi from a 65 year old woman who rediscovered Rush just in the last few years! I have watched this performance dozens of time and cannot tire of it. they are so good! Wanna know something sad? I grew up in Montreal and lived there in 1981 but i did go see that show, fool that I was. The tickets would have been around a whopping $15 at the time... ah well... thank goodness for these videos. Great reaction!
@@NicoleDentelle you have a rush sister who is taking them in through videos as well! I’m thankful for technology!
Always a great song to check out, thanks for the reaction. One of my faves since I was a kid. A band you might also enjoy is Jethro Tull. They had a lot of influence on Rush (Ged has said their album 'Thick as a Brick' is one of his faves and its the best tour he ever saw, and Neil Peart admired Ian Anderson's lyricism), Iron Maiden (Many members are big fans and they've done a cover of Tull's 'Cross Eyed Mary'), Dio (he also did several covers of Tull songs in the mid-70s with his band Elf) and many other bands in the 70s and 80s. Amazing lyrics, social commentary and storytelling, entertaining performances, great musicianship, they are a top shelf band. Their live performances are really impressive, but they also made such strong albums that I tend to lean toward those in reactions. Geddy also said Tull was a band that tough him that you could be serious about your music but also give the fans an entertaining experience and not take yourself too seriously. Aqualung, Locomotive Breath, Cross Eyed Mary, Songs From the Wood, Living in the Past, Ring Out, Solstice Bells ... massive catalog and their span of albums from '68 to '78 is maybe the best run of releases ever IMO. So! thanks again! Your reactions are excellent.
What a great band and what a great time to be alive and to have seen them live so many times in their prime.
I love that quote "Rush makes every other band look lazy!!!" Love it...one of the best live performance ever...Along with "Working Man" Live in Cleveland....I saw them 10 times and they are the best live band ever!
Seen them 43 times but I still say this is their Masterpiece.

Simply a perfect performance. Never gets old.
Xanadu is a great song. This live performance is my favorite from Rush. When I would see them perform this live, the light show and the lasers that would shoot over the crowd made this song so epic live. Thanks for reacting to this. I could see it blew your mind!
I come for the music but stay for your smile 😊
Yeah, this is one of the best performances of Rush recorded live I think. I have many other faves live, but this one is in my top 5: it is epic greatness indeed. Love your reactions!

See what we mean? This is one of those pieces of music, and performance thereof, that is not just a song, it’s a transcendent experience, that takes you to another, better place.
Your smile and reactions makes this old man smile too . Takes me back to the 70's when I first heard Rush when they blew my mind . Cheers from Toronto .
If I heard this song. And was told it took 10 people to perform, I probably wouldn’t find that an excessive amount of people.
Rush is my favorite band. And this is their best performance of all time (IMO)
This song has always been the epitome of Rush as Prog Rock… Agree greatness and a masterpiece. Fun reaction and review 👊🏻
Best live performance of any genre ever!

"Rush makes every other band seem lazy", specially Hootie & the Blowfish 😁Great reaction !
Another masterpiece - La Villa Strangiato, 2112, Jacobs Ladder and because it means so much to Geddy, Red Sector A
1977 the studio album for this song came out. Girls were just getting into Disco while I was jamming to this and tons of other ROCK! Made talking to girls tuff while biting my tongue!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Another great reaction!!! Through your Rush journey thus far...you are truly witnessing musical greatness!!!
More songs below that you haven't reacted to yet. Top of the list is La Villa Strangiato.
- La Villa Strangiato - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental - custom "carnival" intro) - original was 1978. Pure musicianship!!! UNMATCHED - IMHO best instrumental EVER. This was performed just BEFORE Working Man at the concert from what you reacted to before. These were the last two "encore" songs at this concert. Not bad after playing for 3 hours and them being in their 50's. 🙂
- Freewill... Live from Snakes and Arrows Tour 2007 - original was 1980
- The Garden (Clockwork Angels tour live) - original was 2012
- Best Intro Ever - Live version (R30 tour 2004) - various riffs from their 1970's songs leading into Spirit of Radio - original was 1980
- Leave that Thing Alone - Live in Cleveland from 2011 Time Machine Tour (Instrumental) - original was 1993
- Malignant Narcissism (instrumental) and Drum Solo - Live 2008 Snakes and Arrows Tour - original was 2007
- Subdivisions...original video (preferred) or live version - original was 1982
- Fly by Night - original was 1975
- Also...Neil Peart's Drum Solo Live from Frankfurt 2004. He was The Professor...a pure musician and percussionist...not just a "drummer". Be ready to be amazed by not just his hand coordination...but most of all his foot coordination...basically his feet being completely individual in timing from his hands during segments of this performance. He was the master of this technique.
🤗 Oh we are so here for you & ready for these Rush Reactions! 🥰🐰
A true masterpiece! Especially for 3 performers ❤❤❤
Perhaps the guitarist who left the comment about them not being known for their lyrics had been listening to _La_ _Villa_ _Strangiato,_ _YYZ,_ _Malignant_ _Narcissism,_ etc? They do have a lot of successful instrumentals! Anyway, in a crowded field this is my favourite Rush song with lyrics. Glad it wowed you!
Way back when this song was a lot newer, when I was in high school, one of my favorite things to do was get ahold of some good weed and invite a friend over to partake in a stoned RUSH experience I’d come up with. First the smoking, had to be nice and high. Second, I’d lay them down on the floor (face up) and place my stereo speakers on each side of their head facing in. I’d then put a mirror on top so they could see themselves. 🤷♂️ Next, I’d put on Xanadu AT TOP VOLUME and blow their mind! 🤯 Ha Ha! The olden days…..
Most were already RUSH fans and were very familiar with the song, didn’t matter, it still blew their mind. XANADU at HIGH volume just works and works very well. 😁👍
OK I'll say it again. RUSH The greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be.
Now you know why I bugged you about it for so long. In many ways, it's their magnum opus. Regarding lyrics, Neil is a master. He was deep, he was thoughtful and he was brilliant. They didn't call his the Professor ironically. I call this song ... three guys and seven necks! Neil plays an entire percussion orchestral section; Geddy is on Bass, synths, bass pedals, six-string guitar, and vocals; Alex on six and twelve string, along with bass pedals and triggers. It's like an entire orchestra and three guys running around on stage pulling it off. Simply one of the greatest performances ever!!
@@chadbennett7873 - I'm with you on all of this, except: Geddy's guitar is a 12-string, and sound-triggering technology wasn't available yet at that time, which means everything was actually played live and in realtime here 🤯😊
If you watch it again, at the point Geddy starts singing he is also playing bass as well as synth using foot pedals. Ridiculous talent and coordination.
"If you stuck around til the end of this..." You so funny. 😂
YEEESSS!!! Happy to see the journey into RUSH!
That’s Neil talking in the intro of the song. Miss you Neil❤
Remember…everything you hear…they are playing live😮
And Alex is criminally under recognized as an absolute master of melody, hook and technical chops.
@@dsum4563 agreed!
See Alex switch from the 12 string to the 6 string so smoothly at the 12:10 minute mark, incredible and near the end of the song his solo is crazy good and then, he goes out with the foot pedals while rocking the guitar., amazing! ..and Neil on the drums throughout the entire song is just so damn good and of course Geddy seamlessly plays alongside them so amazingly. I love Alex, I love Geddy, I love Neil.
@@moonwoman fascinating
Great reaction. This performance still amazes me after many many views
Alex for sure can make that guitar sing, as one of the Foo fighters said at RUSH's induction, he is a guitar god.
Absolute masters of their craft.
As a 62 year old Canadian who has listened to Rush since I was about 16, it gives me incredible joy to watch you discover and enjoy them today. Can’t wait for you to watch The Garden video from their last tour ❤️
What is not seen here (or in general) are foot pedals being used by Geddy's right foot.
The Rush R30 official concert also has Xanadu is abridged, but you get some real great overhead shots of pedal work.
The cowbell section has Geddy "tapping" notes on floor (Taurus) pedals while playing bass. Remarkable.
One of their best epics, they have some great, long songs that are simply amazing. Do an early killer tune in Bytor and the Snowdog, showing their brains and muscle on this suite, they just kill it. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶🔥
This is one reason I saw Rush 18 times !
They were incredible!!!!
"Rush males every other band seem lazy"-This statement hit an E cord with me. Ever since I took the deep dive into Rush, and they went from a band I heard a few good song from on the radio back in the day, to greatest band and musicians ever, they have eclipsed every other favorite band of mine. I thought I knew what great prog/hard/metal rock was before I heard Rush (beyond Tom Sawyer, Spirit of Radio, Fly By Night and the one album of them I bought in the 80's: The self titled original without Neil!).
I Found them again through CZcams during the pandemic (I rarely watch anything but the occasional how-to/DIY handyman videos before 2020) and I heard the great symphonic masterpieces that I never heard on the radio and kicked myself around for a long time for waiting until their career was over and Neil gone before giving them a fair shake (54 years old 2 years ago when I discovered the real Rush). I had no idea what greatness was! I was continually awe-struck as you @redheadedneighbor , But at least I didn't go through my entire life without knowing their full catalog, which I own nearly all of now on special edition premium vinyl and a few CD's for portability. Led who?
To me, if we were ranking bands by altitude, all the widely known great classic rock bands would be in the clouds at different levels while Rush is on the moon looking down on them! Every time I try to listen to any of my old favorite bands, I can't help but to wonder how much better every song would sound, if it were Rush performing it instead! They broke me for anything less. The only other bands I can listen too and not feel that way about their music and performance are Triumph and Wishbone Ash(both only discovered after I found Rush).
Rush & Nightwish are favorite bands.
When it comes to RUSH its all about the lyrics
I never equated the bells to Pink Floyd when I first discovered this song during a blizzard in Upstate NY, I thought of tropical paradise and now I'm 39 years living in a tropical paradise in S. Florida
Outstanding reaction! Thank you!!! Yours was my exact reaction after hearing this for the first time many years ago. Next, you should really check out on of Neil's drum solos. "Der Trommler" comes to mind, from their R30 tour.
I think Neil wrote almost everthing Your anticipation is great
Amazing band.
it’s already been said in the comments but want to reiterate a comment you made towards the end… “Rush makes all other bands look lazy”. Funny and accurate! And keep in mind this out of the world performance was just one of maybe 10-12 songs they performed! Crazy isn’t it? Ok… I also saw a suggestion for 2112. Just wait til you
watch this one Forewarn it’s about 22 minutes long but you get so caught up in it and doesn’t seem no where near 22 minutes. 2112 was the very first song I heard and just blew me away! I remember sitting there for several minutes and thinking what in world was that I just listened to!!
And 2 more suggestions and it’s from their last album - Clockwork Angels….”Headlong Flight” and “The Garden” There’s much that can be said about “The Garden” but wait till and hopefully you react to it Love your reactions by the way
Cool bit of trivia: Rush did this song in one take in the recording studio.
