Hey Friends! On the bench today is a 2U Socapex break out box. I had to build a set of these for a client and I figured I would shoot it for you to enjoy. DISCLAIMER: follow any of the build procedures at your own risk. As the comments section will tell you, I dont know what I am doing! Anyway, enjoy the video!

Got to love a good building video. I build a lot of things for myself; largely as it's a cost saving. I certainly appreciate why one-off's cost what they do. There are some items that are relatively off the shelf Stateside, but in England, getting certain breakout boxes for what I would consider a reasonable price can be a challenge.
Great video! It's enjoyable to watch you explain how you work. I've never heard of Socapex before - always good to learn something new.

I am assuming that this is a break out box for lighting? I would be interested in seeing how the circuits are switched form the control box, maybe get into even midi control.
Hey Sean. I’m an audio guy, so take this statement with that in mind. I believe that in newer LED rigs, the Soca is mostly handling power only (vs dimmed power for conventional lights). DMX is plugged into each fixture directly to handle control. Older rigs with dedicated lighting distros had control elements built into the distro. These panels are generally used for courtesy breakout power at end points. Since the Socapex infrastructure exists within a rig/venue. These are an easy way to make it usable from the multi pin format.

If you are keeping the grounds separate, shouldn't you be using Hubbell IG5352? Otherwise the outlets will be grounded to the panel by the mounting screw.
They are separate…but not “that” separate.
@@billylaguardia I don't understand your design. By using normal outlets, the faceplate screws MAY connect their grounds together if the faceplate screws bite though the paint on the panel. With isolated ground outlets, the mounting strap and the faceplate screw are insulated from the protective earth connection, which would maintain the integrity of your isolated ground wires.
@@timothystockman7533 You are correct, however assuming that all grounds go back to the same buss bar in the panel/main distro we dont generally need to use iso outlets. That being said, we build everything per order. Happy to use iso outlets if a customer requests them. Most people dont want to spend the extra money for them just to isolate the outlet straps from the panel chassis. These Socapex distros are commonly used for lighting applications where ground loop noise is less of an issue than for audio.
