- Super Mario RPG reviewed by Tom Marks on Nintendo Switch.
This wonderfully faithful remake makes it easy for anyone who missed it in the SNES era to see why it's considered a classic. It’s unabashedly odd, and it’s also ultra-satisfying to time your attacks just right. Super Mario RPG already held up pretty well if you didn’t mind a bit of dust on its different systems, but now there’s no excuse not to see why Mario’s most unexpected adventure is still so beloved.

Mario has been killing it this year. Two new games, both of which are great, three DLC updates to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and a blockbuster film.

Not really feeling the criticism that the original art style is lost. This is probably the best example of 2d sprites becoming 3d models without losing their distinct style.
Agreed. Some people will just never be pleased because they have their own ideas in their heads of how remakes/remasters should be done

That depends on sales of the remake, if it sells well, then there’s a high chance we could get a sequel, if not, then it’s not happening.

Best part of this game is that we now have a much clearer look at all the character models. The SNES could only show so much that any further could only be shown in the manual or art book

Already pre-ordered a looking forward to it arriving. EarthBound and Crono Trigger need this treatment now.
No matter how perfectly remade those 2 games will be, people will still be divisive on it compared to the original lol

Squaresoft were unstoppable in the 90s. Imagine all of their SNES games remade like this.

Nostalgia at an all time high with this remake! Glad they kept it original but updated cut scenes. Well done Nintendo

27 years huh…. Man long time. My oldest is 26 years old and I’ve been playing this game for that long.
The graphics complaint makes little sense to me. The original game’s sprites were all digitized 3D rendered models. The Switch can run those renders in real time now. This remake is more of a HD remaster with real time 3D models based off the original games rendered sprites.
Played the game back in 1996 and can't wait to play this again in 2023.
Remake of Mario & Luigi Superstar or Paper Mario 64 would be awesome

got through like an hr of the first game as a kid back on snes. dont remember much of it but im excited to revisit this game this weekend

Recommend picking up Sea of Stars if you like this combat. It’s a much longer, more well developed game. More of a challenge as well. Love me some Mario too!

Yeah it's a ten if your gaming tier level is pong, mario rpg games are nowhere near a ten, heck they're not even on the mother trilogy's level.
Awesome that they're remastering old classics. But the price tag is just cruel. Full triple A pricetag for something they made decades ago and just polished it up. Especially for a 12hr game...
to be fair, it is technically *less* expensive than the original, if you factor in inflation. But yeah, it is rather expensive....

Mario has absolutely smashed it this year, and as someone who never played the original Super Mario RPG, I’m looking forward to this, especially having just recently got the game a few days ago.

2023 has been an AMAZING year for Mario! 2 new games, 3 DLC updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe AND a GREAT feature film from Illumination!!!

It would had been better if they're also DLC for Mario Kart 8.
My one big concern would be is the games difficulty as easy as the Pokémon gen 4 remake?

I'm 31, never played the original. Just ordered the game, definitely looking forward to playing it.
Very valid criticism about the game's look. A remake's art direction should never seek to reproduce the look of the original, but rather the FEELING it gave players.

You can’t really replicate that. The feelings you get from a game are often down to the circumstances of when it was played.

$60 is steep if you have the original or played it many times already because it's basically the same. It's not like the original had bad graphics.
I’m hoping this remake is to gauge public interest in Mario/Nintendo rpg games. So hopefully if it sells well we will get a sequel and maybe a new Paper Mario more like the original or TTYD

Played the original 2 months ago. The clone boss was the hardest fight in the game. Took me almost an hour.
That game was a 10/10 master piece when it came out in 1996... They we're so ahead in the gaming industry.. It was almost 30 years ago! That rework is a very great one. Well done Nintendo! Hopefully, Blizzard learn something from that rework because they failed hard with WoW Vanilla... Nintendo knew how to Keep the Core of the intial Game with improved graphics and improved fights. Nice job on the HUD interface too. Hoping to see them move forward and push a new Mario RPG 2 soon :)
IN CASE YOU GUYS DONT WANT TO GET SPOILED BY ANYTHING (in terms of cutscenes, bosses, etc.) IGN GAVE THIS AN 8 OUT OF AN 10.

fun fact...this prepped me for FF7 back in the days...because prior to Mario RPG Legend of the seven stars..i've never played any turn based RPG before Mario RPG....so gald it got a remade and that everyone can enjoy this in it's fresh new look
