- The great silent film star Alla Nazimova stars as "Salome" in this adaptation of the Oscar Wilde classic. The art direction, of course, is by Natacha Rambova, Nazimova's lover and the future Mrs. Rudolph Valentino.
I love this sequence! Nazimova is amazing. Apparently this film was panned in its day and pretty much ended her career. A classic case of art being ahead of its time I guess. Thank you so much for posting this!
The art, the costumes, pure Beardsley! I've been a fan of his art for so long, but I never knew about this film. Thank you so much for posting!
Great thing about cinema - always enduring, everlasting, ever young. Thank you, Oncle Pete!
These marvelous artists could say so much more with their faces than words could ever do.
The music was really captivating.
i came found this because kenneth anger recommends it--this sequence is amazing
This is the alternate score by Silent Orchestra from the Image Entertainment DVD. Thanks for posting!
The idea that Natacha Rambova and Nazimova were lovers is tabloid speculation and was never proven. It comes from Crowley disciple Kenneth Anger's book Hollywood Babylon, which has been called into question several times by many notable film historians.
Thank you so much for putting this online :)
1922-1923. Different sources list it as either year. I thought I had listed the year. Thank you for calling my oversight to my attention! And thanks for watching!
For the definitive story on Nazimova, please read the biography by Gavin Lambert. Thank you for commenting!
Bubbling? You mean they weren't overt enough for you ...? lol! Just kidding. Thank you SO MUCH for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you1 I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! A true visual delight...
Thanks dear friend!
Watching was great experience and pleasure;
take to favorities.
Thank you.
Hello! This is the best quality video of Salome that I've found in the whole internet so far, thanks so much for uploading it. I've been struggling to find a 720p rendering of it, nevermind 1080p. Even the single DVD available on my local library seems to be on 480p. Could you please let me know where you got it from?
Thanks!
I'm somehow......addicted to it completely
Creo que cyndi lauper se parece a ella, creo que la actitud de cyndi, sus movimientos quizá se inspiran en ella. Tiene una belleza extraña, hipnótica.
Thank you for watching!!

I think Rambova’s art style would have been PERFECT for a version of Alice in Wonderland with Alla Nazimova as the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts 😂
LOL! Thanks for commenting!
I quite agree. You know, Russell made his own version of Salome called "Salome's Last Dance" with Stratford Johns and Glenda Jackson. I'm afraid I'm not a fan of it as I am this version, but, yes, certainly Russell has been influenced by this. Not to mention that Michelle Phillips played Natacha Rambova and Leslie Caron played Nazimova in Russell's "Valentino," a film I am aware that I am in the minority for adoring! lol! Thanks for commenting, Michael!
Unusual :)
Could we know the year of this production, please...?
So important always.
Thank you.
@wayrider1 A little late to the game, but: check out the version uploaded by SerpaTulku. I think this is the version you're referring to.
Was that the original score from the movie? My DVD of it is not that clear, and I don't remember that sequence from it. Thanks for posting! But I have to disagree with you that Natacha and Alla were lovers...
Nazimova
Great video but incorrect info, there is zero proof that they were lovers.
similar to lady gagas video bad romance
Entertainment used to be fun and simple. Just a little leg was enough. Now, it's not any good unless it sets our brains on fire!
That was a real treat!!! The bubbling sexual undertones were interesting to watch.
Certainly Ken Russell was inspired by this.
She looks like Cyndi Lauper.
No, I'm afraid I haven't.
I AM LMAO!!!
So this is where SIA came from. Lol
Yes I know it's in the Bible!
purportedly an all gay cast!
She's not a very good dancer.
Orribile!!! tutto orribile!!!
