Question to the farmer on his land " Do you gone eat this all ", " No I can't " he answers, question " Do you hope to sell it for money " "Yes I suppose so" is the answer of the farmer looking around his dry ground and the poor crop under the sun, " Do you have your trust on money " is the next question, " No ......." and he cannot supplement his answer by eternity while the Creator has the value of eternity as the value of money is fading away. He looks one moment of understanding his mistake with a smile of joy where the promise is passing by.

But Ajahn Brahm may forget that there are many people without relatives and friends. In the states, there's about 250,000 kids orphaned a year. At 18, they "age out" of any social support, though they may meet criteria for a college scholarship. Other people have highly mobile jobs. So much so they are on travel about 80% of their work time. So it's false, any idea that every single adult has family & friends. They do not.
You can always make new friends. Whether it be at the local monastery, church, community centre, or even online. Join a sports team, cooking class, knitting group, volunteer for charity etc.
In the history of the human race it's never been easier to connect with people than it is today! In the not too distant past you were basically restricted to the village or small town that you were born in. These days the entire world is open for interaction. Even with Covid related enforced isolation, people are developing new ways to connect online.
Additionally, in the past there was no social support. The downtrodden would basically starve or die of disease (you can forget welfare and scholarships). At least these days people can get welfare assistance in most developed countries, which as flawed as it may be, is still exponentially better than any other point in human history.
In the human realm, this era is about as good as it gets!
I’m lonely, depressed, and have no friends and have rocky relations with my family. I started joining online Zoom meditations with Buddhist societies around the world. Putting yourself out there to make connections doesn’t only limit to friends and family, because all friends were once strangers. Start meeting strangers online and that can blossom into feeling less alone
