Ajahn Brahm offers a teaching on the spiritual power of silence, and how the experience of silence has the power to heal all and many of our problems and conflicts.
Ajahn Brahn , I don't know if you'll ever read this but i thought I'd take the chance to write to you. I have recently been through a trauma in my life and I believe with all my heart that your lectures have saved my life. You have given me a chance to see joy in things I have never noticed before. You taught me that love , giving and receiving , can be found all around me. You have changed the course of my life. I now regularly attend temple for meditation and continue to learn the lessons of Buddhism. Thank you , thank you so much for showing me the right path. With all my love, Stephanie Tyson
I'm glad to of found Ajahn Brahm again; his talks kept me sane when I was a 15-year-old shut-in who went months without leaving the house. I appreciate his balance between wisdom and quirky humor.
Ajahn Brahm is a sleeping pill for me. I listened to his talk every night, at least a few minutes. After that, i feel so relaxed and can fall asleep easily..
You raised a very good point here. Ajahn Brahm always says open the door of your heart, no matter who you are and what you do. To me, thats the compassion. When one has the wisdom and the insight to embrace all matters, not just all sentient beings, but also ones own anxiety, hatred and fear, one would live in peace with all and one will serve all sentient beings naturally became compassion is our true nature.
I am a Sri Lankan and i used to listen to Ven. Ajan Brahms talks. These are amazing and always capable of making peace in the minds of so many people. You are so blessed for your compassion.... May you attain Nibbana very soon!!! :) Triple Gems blesses!!!
Just wanted to say, I fully understand the benefits of silence. Strange how Buddhism teaches us to see our aggressors as our greatest teachers. I learned to be comfortable with solitude and silence through being ostracised as a 10yr old for being a British immigrant in South Africa by the white teachers and pupils alike. It ruined my education, destroys my self esteem, confidence, ability to trust and/or form lasting relationships of a personal/intimate nature, BUT thanks to all of that and much much more, I now live in a beautiful remote part of the Scottish Highlands, no street lights, no shops, no neighbours . People ask if I am not frightened and I can say wholeheartedley NO. Alone in the wilderness there is nothing to fear, only amongst people is there reason to fear. Im sitting today looking out over a beautiful loch and all around is white with snow. These bullies gave me this gift of being happy in silence. I have the peace and the lack of interuption to help me to grow spritually, to learn from you and others like you and really understand. So thanks to you and thankyou to those who helped me become a hermit, I truley do appreciate it
That's an amazing way of seeing things. I have all of the problems you mentioned despite desperately wanting to be otherwise. Perhaps it is a blessing in disguise, to find beauty in being alone. Thanks
I was always a chatty child. One day I was told that we have two ears but only one mouth for a very important reason. We should always listen twice as much as we talk.
I like the philosophy of Buddhism because I have such a sensitivity to the violence of this society and the times in which we live. I find these dharma talks speak to my soul. I am very grateful to have discovered these talks.
Southern California I feel you my friend. Without his talks, I would still be going through intense depression. It's still there somedays, but the talks have eased the pain.
The philosopher ajahn brahm references is Blaise Pascal. The quote is:. All of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone. Blaise Pascal, Pensées
Totally agree. We need to understand ourselves before we can live in peace with ourselves. When we live in peace with ourselves, we also live in peace with everything else. Talking about people being cruel to animal......actually people are even more cruel to other people......all because we don't really learn about ourselves and how to live in peace.
peaceful life of mine with meditation. our get free happy life . Buddha. Damaha. Sachake. Buddha show to peaceful life . may be free happy. i study to meditation for 10 years. it is very peaceful life . kindness of mine, like that a flower in my heart.
52:15 sometimes i haveto listen to a talk, because i tend to forget while living my life through epsiodes how to find that center of silence inside that's why we have monks, to continuously point the way
Of course I'm not saying that he is some good for nothing teacher. On the contrary, my very motive to raise this issue is the impression that he has great insight and compassion; this is why I don't understand how could be possible that he doesn't talk at all about these things. In the case of several other teachers I wouldn't even bother to write anything. About Earthlings: you can find it's playlist in my CZcams-page. It really broke my heart.
ajahn brahm, i am a country doctor in one of the islands of the philippines and i really want to know more about buddhism. my whole family is very eager to learn more but alas we dont have any monastery6 here . we have one in the city but we like the theraveda . i hope you can help us.
Thank you for your reply. :-) Due to the limit, it's hard to go into details. Basically, his talk is almost always deals with the trivial issues of people (anthropocentrism), while the world is *falling apart*. I'd call this "Buddhism as usual", like the "business as usual" attitude in politics. I know that Ajahn use this technique for reason, but there are other ways of teaching; ways that inspire people more directly to see, feel and act. If you're interested, google "Letter from Thầy".
Excellent simple Direct and straight to the point information about Silence. Please could you tell me the Meditation you practice i need to practice to achieve this silence. Thank you so much
He is a good teacher, I agree. He knows how to meet with people's expectations, but meeting with people's expectations in these days often means feeding anthropocentrism and self-centered attitudes: the main delusions of today's societies and minds. We should all strive to explain reality as completely as we can, and to do as much and as universal justice in the world as we can; not just among the humans, but among all sentient beings. I'm confident that he'll realize this one day. Metta. :o)
@brucinda01 It can help though. Studies have shown that meditation has helped reduce stress levels (abnormal hormonal activity included), strengthen your immune system and provide psychological reinforcement. It helps you deal with the situation with a clearer view of how things are, allowing you to be at peace with whatever that is ailing you, even if it is a cancer. I don't know if meditation alone can cure cancer but I think it definitely helps you deal with it and maybe act as a preemptive.
In dealing with death and illness, please find this book "No Death , No Fear" written by Thich Nhat Hanh. I hope this can help you and your patients to find peace.
@cricket279 animals are not the same as us, one primary difference is they don't know they are going to die which is one of the worst curses we have as humans. On top of that we aren't meant to be vegans. It's an unhealthy diet that can lead to health problems without supplements.
I wish I lived in a country amongst a population that took part in community based cultural activities. If you dont want to go pub crawling and brawling, physically attack the opposing team of the sport you like OR have money to participate in monied activities, then forget it. How brilliant it would be to have festivals of light, love , giving, sharing but it will never happen here. Good to find like minds online though. Peace and love to all
Sorry for my carelessness. The last part should read.....one would live in peace with all and one will serve all sentient beings naturally because compassion is our true nature.
Yes, compassion is universal. But my concern is the Ajahn's aspiration. I feel that his aspiration is limited to people, while there are many other sentient beings. Yes, we can only share dhamma with people, but we can share it in a way that results in direct support for other beings. The one who truly unbiased aims the most good with speaking, even if it's not the audience's good. For example, watch Earthlings, and then tell me that dealing with trivial human matters is a fair thing to do. :-(
+optizap I think he was explaining the importance and power of having moments of silence in life. That doesn't mean you have to keep in silence 24/7. Knowledge is golden and you need to break the silence to pass it on. Keep adding to others people experience in this word and not subtracting.
+Vinicius Santana What people do or say doesn't have to follow a logic framework. Contradictions cease to exist when you stop using logic when listening.
However some people use silence in a speculative way. Silence is not always a positive sign. It's like "mindfulness". A thief needs to be mindful and silent. Beware of those who are too silent.
Ajahn Brahm's talks regularly make me sad. Dear viewers, please, look beyond his talks, and if you got energy, discover the problems of the world, and do some good for other beings, for the nature. We can find real spiritual development in putting our heart outside us, but if we are always concerned about our own condition, we will hardly find any peace. Peace lies not in us, but in our compassion for others. And we already know the main cause of cancer: western, animal-based diet.
Listening to Ajahn Brahm talk never fails to lift me up, even if just a little. 🙏🏼☮️❤️
I'm Catholic and I agree with this monk, he has a point, most problems comes from not being able to sit still. I like your teachings.
Ajahn Brahn ,

Ironic for a 53 min talk. Oh well some love to chat.
Well he wasn't going to sit there in silence for 53 minutes was he. Pretty pointless lecture. Probably wouldn't get that many views or recognition.
