  • Probably the number 1 question I get from people on how to fly the Apache. Hope it helps.

    You make everything seem utterly effortless. I’m still bad, very bad at this manoeuvre. My company had the pleasure of having two apache gunships provide close air support in Afghanistan, they were pretty much ours to command on almost all our jobs. I never actually appreciated how talented the crews were at the time.

    So satisfying to watch! I haven't flown the Apache yet, but whenever I slow down in the Huey or Hind I end up overshooting my mark, bobble around like a drunk trying to settle into the hover, gain/lose way too much altitude... I've got a long way to go, and spending most of my sim time in fixed wing modules isn't exactly helping.

      Give yourself more room, start decelerating earlier and most importantly, take your time to do it nice and smooth. It's not a competition to just make it at the latest possible point (well, practicing quick stops wouldn't be wrong either, but in those you don't aim to hover at a specific point).

      The huey imo will just cause you pain and suffering. The Apache is a different breed of actual stability, and you can do all sorts of shenanagins. For example, you can reliably (and without crashing 100% of the time) do what he did in a rougher manner in about a quarter or eighth of the time. Once you get the hang of it it's crazy what you can do.

    Oh before I forget, I think you may like the project for a real feel collective and cyclic stick by the channel Heli Mech (previously known as 737DIYSIM). They are both DIY but with clear instructions and intend to solve issues like the weird feeling of trimming with a standard off-the-shelf self centering stick.

    I've learned a lot form my model helicopters. especially the ones with low thrust-weight ratio. It helped me quite a lot in combination met technical knowledge of heli's to "just start flying".
    Now don't get me wrong. I've got loads to learn but it helped me to get off the ground and move the vehicle where I want from the start without crashing. It didn't take long before I started to take the risk to mess around in the cities. At first high and gradually lower and closer to the street. (making it more difficult to "punch out" of a risky situation)
    For all other aspects I learn a lot from your video's so thank you!

      make sure to fly with the controls display (right ctrl + enter) open, and give yourself plenty of time when executing the landing to trim a few times thru the process. build an instance in the editor with zero wind so you can get a clean hover then add it in later. Also, altitude hold and attitude hold are you friend. Trim in your hover, hit both of those and you're completely hands free.

  • @daronsneedmusic

    I guess I would be removed (physically) from flight school for the AH64, cause I still don't get it. I have tried to slow down and land MANY times but I keep crashing. My question is: Are you adjusting the collective ONLY or the RPM as well? What is causing the "rearward" attitude?

    • @wcphambo1401
      @wcphambo1401 Před rokem +3

      Collective only. The RPM is managed by the EDECU. The helicopter is always trying to maintain 101 rotor rpm on the Delta model (100 on an Echo).
      When you push the cyclic forward, you are tilting the lift vector which takes the downward airflow and points it to the rear. When you slow down, you’re doing the same thing in opposite. The reason you reduce the collective, is so you don’t climb. If all you did was move the cyclic aft, you’re going to trade airspeed for altitude.

    • @TimmyRH
      @TimmyRH Před rokem +2

      Don't forget about pedals - you should also compensate the collective adjustment with it

  • @velamenradicum
    @velamenradicum Před rokem

    Since I got my Brunner CLS-E FBB, I'm able to do a fullstop from max speed by kicking in a lot of pedals at a certain speed and keep full control of the aircraft. Little like a skier brakes. Of course not such a smooth slow down and your nose will point to another direction when you come to a hover, but I wonder if this is a real life procedure? Feels like a handbrake.

  • @danielu2143
    @danielu2143 Před rokem

    Hello Casmo. Always enjoy and appreciate all the info you give about Apache through you videos. I still have a question regarding the cyclic and the trim. How does the cyclic behave in real, does it come back to the center position ? And what is the trim about in real ? Will it leave the stick in the position when you push the trim button ? All questions because I would like to invest in a cyclic that is as close as possible as the real one. Thank you very much !

    • @CasmoTV
      @CasmoTV  Před rokem

      Force trim Holds the cyclic in place. So if you set it forward and left and set the force trim then it’s stays there forward and left.

      @@CasmoTV What happens is I pull up my nose to about 10 to 15 degrees while adjusting torque to maintain altitude, so far so good, I keep adding more torque as I slow down, come almost to a stop/hover, and then the Heli starts vibrating like crazy and I fall like a rock.
      Feels like I fail at the precise moment of transitioning between slow forward movement and actually hovering.
      I'm mainly flying the Ka-50 if that's relevant, have flown the Huey and Apache a bit too.
