I have heard you mention the issue of die back in more than just this video. I have been painting with water for awile, never had anyone to warn me of having possible issues with die back from control coating. Very curious about that
Hi, thanks for the question. When Hi-TEC is applied as per the TDS in a 1.5 coat continuous process he basecoat surface after drying is very smooth and therefore supports easy clearcoat wetting with a good gloss hold out. Applying the droplet coat shown in the video as a corrective or rescue method produces a coarser surface which can, depending on clearcoat film build lead to die back in some cases. That is why in this video I suggest to aply a little more clear in the areas where the corrective measures have been applied to help compensate for this.
Never tried putting it on dry like that !! Makes me nervous

You are much further away on the door than the hood. You said to keep it close on the hood to control overspray but on the door it looks like you were 8-10 inches away.
Hi thanks for your comments. The approach of both fixes is a bit different. On the bonnet the intention is to carry out a touch up to remove a small dust enclosure. The focus here is to keep the repair as small as possible. On the door the issue is different. Here we want to show, how you can fix a bad halo blend once occuring. Of course the area to rectify is larger and therefore the distance of the spray gun to the object needs to be greater than on the bonnet.

Excellent. Beautiful. I am a do it yourselfer. The grey primer I laid down on my hood was not very consistently done by me. A few Slight patch variations. (size of about 3 inches) I didn't realize how much primer imperfections still come through my pewter metallic Base Coat! Paint looks good, but areas above the primer patches look slightly shaded darker. Was thinking to sand those, and repaint like you did before patch spraying, and later the Clear Coat. Or will those patches always be there since the primer below is the culprit?
Thanks for your comment and thank you for using our products. Not sure about the issue you described, but would advise to respray the hood completely in order to achieve a uniform result. Please check also our other videos reg. general basecoat application.
Hi, Thanks for the video. Our shop is considering switching to Spies. What Sata spray gun tip sizes do you recommend for the Hi Tec water Basecoat? And also for the Spies Clearcoats? Ive got x5500 RP and 5000 RP.
Hi, thanks for the question and for considering to use our products. In our standrad European conditions Tony uses an RP 1.2 for for Hi-TEC. For the clears it depend on which he is using. For the lower viscosity new generation clears he uses an RP 1.2/1.2O, moving to a 1.3/1.3O for the older technology clears. Set up choice is always personal and determined by the product you are using, the size and type of job and the climate conditions you are working in. The respective TDS provides guidance.

Hi buddy never used base coat before I sprayed my bumper came out like a dry sand effect is that not been closed enough
This could be caused by a number of reasons such as application technique, distance too great from the substrate, too fast adjustment of base coat for the conditions, too high air pressure, incorrect gun set up….....

I know this is old but what about paint fry ups and wrinkles in the base coat ?
With waterborne basecoat and Hi-TEC in particular this does not happen that often now. With solventborne basecoat it would indicate a soft or sensitive substrate in the area of the repair. You can either isolate this with a suitable 2K Surfacer applied to the whole panel if you know in advance that the substrate is likely to be problematic. If it happens during application of the basecoat and if it's small, dry the basecoat, sand the defect lightly and gently reapply at lower pressure. If not successful or the reaction is more severe, apply 2K Clearcoat, dry and after cooling lightly sand and reapply the basecoat/clearcoat.

How should I ser the 5000 for ms clear?
For the Sata 5000 I would suggest to use a 1.3 or 1.4 set up with an inlet pressure of 1.8 - 2.2 Bar.

Yes. The spraygun is designed in normal circumstances to be used with fully opened functional controls (fan & fluid).

Hi, one HiTEC is flashed off you can easily tack the surface thanks to the excellent drying capabilities and surfcae hardness. This is not common with all waterborne basecoats I know!
