  • Russia’s Progress cargo spacecraft was the first space cargo freighter designed and built for the sole-purpose of topping off food, water and fuel for off-word outposts.

The design is derived from the Soyuz and it is launched on a Soyuz rocket. It is not reusable and it does not come back down to Earth safely; it burns up in the atmosphere after use.
Over 160 Progress missions have resupplied stations such as Salyut 6, Salyut 7, Mir and the International Space Station.
The Progress design has been upgraded over the decades to be able to send more cargo up and weigh less for launch. On occasion, special variants have been used to send small modules up to space stations, such as the two docking ports currently on the ISS called Pirs and Poisk.

Progress is 7.48 meters long, some 35 cm longer than Soyuz because its gruzovoi otsek (dry cargo pressurised compartment) is longer than Soyuz. It has an enlarged cylindrical section connecting the two hemispheres of the compartment.

Technically the space shuttle was the first resupply vehicle because in 1999 Discovery launched the Double Module containing CARGO to the ISS, Progress was the 2nd new vehicle

Progress actually brought supplies to Soviet Salyuts and Mir too, starting in 1978

Close Russian space program. A hostile nation on Earth doesn't deserve to conquer other worlds.
