Used to work with a guy who would ask every large table if it was a special occasion, and if it was he always managed to convince them a bottle of champagne or round of cocktails was the way to celebrate.
i did that once asked a large table if it was a special occasion they said yes and to sum it up i suggested cocktails or champagne…turns out they were celebrating their sobriety should’ve asked what the occasion was😅

The up selling is always sexual innuendo.
He was so close too, could have ended it with "and their friends always sprung for extra and always thought it was worth every penny, personally I'd never skip on the (insert high profit item), especially not at this price"
Some have a balance of those that can upsell and those that WON'T. As a server, I tended to not treat people like they were so stupid, they couldn't figure out exactly what they wanted for themselves. Also, as a customer, I hate upselling servers bc all they see me as is a dollar sign. My favorite is when I ask a server what their personal recommendation is on something, and they don't recommend the most expensive thing on the menu. When they do this, I tip more. Don't be an upselling server.
I definitely could struggle to upsell when I tried to, so instead I would just go into my memory bank for similar guests and suggest things that those guests ordered. My suggestions were more logical than what I would come up with on my own since I have a bit of a kooky imagination.

When I was working in a chain restaurant that shall not be named, I used obscure quasi-official holidays like National Chocolate Milkshake Day to give people an excuse to splurge. On National Ice Cream Cone day came around, I got about 30 or so extra ice creams sold.
Are servers required to upsell? Now I feel bad because I'm the customer who gets the SAME item everytime, so I don't even let them get thru their special items. "May I please just have the..."
@@thehigherevolutionarywell no. But more money spent means more tips and more money for the restaurant. And sometimes restaurants have point systems to keep track of there upselling. So some may require it
@The Higher Evolutionary Its not "required" per say but the manager can make decisions about your employment if your check totals are low

I worked at a place with a manager who paid attention to those days. National Tequila Day and National Margarita Day are two fun holidays. It does make it easier to upsell.
Also, December 5th is the anniversary of the repeal of prohibition. That's a great drinking holiday.

These are always entertaining, but the more you do the more I appreciate your acting chops.
Poor Aaron . He tried. It helps if they let you try the food so you can describe it better. I would always say if you were looking for something different you should try this...or you should get the appetizer platter. It's my fav. We make our own sauce and the portion is huge and way cheaper than the store. That usually helped.

I feel like i pull all the stops. Talk specials as a greet so they don't over study the menu, talk about apps and how last few tables loved them, recommend wine to pair with a meal, but it's like I always fall short. I can't tell if it's a skill thing or just rotten luck.
