- THE BOTHY, old inscriptions dating back to 1800s unbelievable history.but is it really a bothy? This type of shelter is actually known as a cairn shelter, a stone structure that cone’s towards the top with a seat with a snug space for no more then two people. It seems to me that this would be used by Shepard’s, hikers or people that needed a refuge from the weather for short periods of time. This one is not far from Calf top that is a height of 609 m a good 2000ft in elevation. The whole walk from the village of Barbon in the Yorkshire Dales Cumbria is one of stunning beauty with paths along the Barbon Beck. I however took the short, direct but steep path up the side of the mountain to see this awesome and historic cairn with inscriptions and dates going back to the 1800s. Not wanting to feel out I left my mark and a Bee Outdoors patch in a glass jar that was decorated in brown orange stripes. It was a long hard walk up but the views made it worth wile.
Once I got to the cairn I could see Morecambe Bay and the coast line in the far distance. However one would need a good clear day and be warned it’s not a climb that I would under estimate.
