This is an absolute joke that the Lakers are really considering hiring a guy with no coaching experience, not HC experience, but no coaching experience period. Because J.J. Redick sounds smart on TV debating Stephen A. So, for that reason, he should be hired to be the HC of a veteran team that wants to win now?? This is disaster waiting to happen. Rob Pelinka and the front office should be fired for even considering this nonsense. If they hire Redick, I hope that all the smoke that they gave Darvin Ham that they do same for Redick. Also. The Steve Kerr comparisons are not valid. Steve Kerr worked in the front office before he was given the GSW job. Mark Jackson built up that Warriors team that was ready to take the next step. The reason he didn't stay on as HC because the owner had issues with Mark Jackson because of his beliefs, not his coaching ability. And since the GSW job Mark Jackson has been black-balled from becoming a HC. I laugh when I hear Laker fans say they don't want Mark Jackson, but let's give J.J. Redick a try at HC?? This is a Flat-out joke, The Lakers should be embarrassed at themselves..

@jackjax7921 Not every NBA player is a lockdown All-Defensive type player. Curry and Lillard can't defend either, and there are quite a few other guards who are much better on offense than on defense. Austin is a versatile player and pretty good passer - so what if he's not a great defender?

MJ - One playoff series, how often was Golden State in the playoffs, he's been an announcer, close to basketball and he's able to see the game from a different lens.
Sam Cassell has been a part of the changing landscape and because he has been with Doc Rivers should not be held against him. He has helped to develop players and as a player, he was a leader. Yes, he has had a lot of interviews, does that mean he doesn't know the game. Maybe, he's not a good test taker. He was vital to the championships won in Houston. He was a starter and will Garner the respect of the locker room.
Donovan Mitchell is a Star, not a superstar.
I actually feel good about JJ as long as he has experience next to him. This team doesnt need a motivational type coach as much as we needed a game planner and strategist. We know or we have an idea that JJ knows strategy I feel good about that. If we can snag some solid veteran assistants I think it could work. I wish we could swipe Ty Lue with JJ on staff though.
I like the pairing of Sam Cassell and JJ considering the Lakers want to develop Max and other young players while trying to win with Bron and AD. I like the JJ thinks basketball and I think its time for fresh ideas.
If Coach K is mentoring JJ, JJ will be the one we been wanting for long term. Like drafting one of our own and intend to keep long term. Lakers wanted Coach K but he was glued to college world. I am very glad that the Lakers still have good relations with him. This is a good time as any to invest in a new era with JJ being mentored by a legendary coach that both the Lakers and Celtics wanted back in the day.

David Adelman, Sam Cassell, Chris Quinn, Micah Nori, or JJ Redick are my favorites for head coach. I like Reaves but I'd trade him for one or two 6'8 3&D two-way wings with length who can shoot, rebound, & play lockdown defense.
We all would, but if someone is 6'8'', can play lockdown defense and shoot and rebound, they make 20M or are locked into long term contracts. That's why the Lakers got Rui for 18M. You can't have all that you want in one guy for what Austin makes - 13M.

I asked Dan via super chat and he said that MJ has an eye for talent and (in that interview you’re referring to) MJ was just agreeing with the obvious adjustments that anyone that’s a basketball fan could think of. Fair comparison for JJ potentially becoming a HC is more Doc Rivers ironically. Both have played in the NBA, both have done game commentary before getting into coaching

It's just a timing thing. IF you're a good coach, you're going to have a job. Good assistants can kind of take their time waiting for the right job and teams will try to keep them. Most of the time, it's retreads, little to no experience or no thank you's.

The Mark Jackson hype is so weird. He has the same playoff wins as Darvin. He lost to a team that had the biggest owner scandal in NBA, likely in all sports at the time. He has an eye for talent, that much is impossible to ignore, but the fact he couldn’t get along with people behind the scenes over time is what is holding him back. Jeanie, Rob, and the Rambi are not going to cater to someone that never won a chip or got to a conference finals.

I didn’t like Sam Cassell or JJ Redick as players, as I found them both annoying, and I am a Laker fan. But I’m not sure any of the “experienced” options are that interesting or special. We clearly blew it in 2020, notwithstanding winning a title. But here we are and the pickings are slim.
I’m glad we are out on Budenholzer. His winning a championship means the same as Vogel: not much. Both lost their locker rooms; neither are inspiring.
The national sports media is upset with the Lakers because of Han’s “great record”. Anyone who watched the Lakers a great deal saw his limitations consistently. Ham being a nice guy bought him time. But most of us know he had to go. We shouldn’t be basing our hire on the same stat-based principles used so frequently. It’s got to be a combination of stats (experience) and the “eye test”.
Pat Riley went from Chick’s broadcast partner to assistant coach for two years to taking over after 11 games in 1981. Head coaching experience may be an over-rated metric.
We also don’t have 2 years to wait. The Lebron window is closing. We should be in win-now mode until that is no longer viable.
