To put it simply, Paul Simon is definitely in the Top Three of the most poetic, prolific and enduring American songwriters/singers in our Country's musical history. Along with Art Garfunkel, they were one of the best American singing duos we've had the pleasure of listening to over the last several decades. And I must give a shout-out to the Everly Brothers for being their biggest influence when it came to their harmonizing whenever they sang Paul's great songs. Thanx again, Fil. Paul Simon can tell an entire story with just one line. Amazing talent. How many of you out there knew his 'Mother and Child Reunion' was inspired by... wait for it... a dish on a Chinese menu! Yep, it's true. It was a chicken and egg dish, hence, the mother and child phrase. I've been a fan of Paul's for over fifty years, with and without Artie.

I am a fan of Paul.Simon. He is a poet that uses song writing. He has written songs that run through many of the states of human emotion, yhe tiredness of a relationship in Dangling Conversation, pure exuberance of life in the 59th Street Bridge Song, anger at being forced into a rut by things you can't change in Patterns, and this was just his early works. Even the track Silent Night/9 o'clock news is a stark and terrible exposure between what we want and what is.

He is a lyrical genius - such vivid imagery like angels in the architecture spinning in infinity. I also loved the point you made about his hooks. Reminds me of a scene from the movie Mr. Holland's Opus in which Mr. Holland puts "Louie, Louie" on the classroom record player and says "it's just three chords, played over and over... and I love it! Fil, great take on his song writing ability. He also has a great ear and ability to gather the right musicians to achieve the sound for each song he records. I saw him in the early 70's. He played solo on his acoustic ; Mrs. Robinson, Homeward Bound, The Boxer, Sound of Silence and his acoustic playing was flawless. I was strictly an electric player back then and it blew my mind how good he was on the acoustic by himself. Oddly enough, he did not use an acoustic pick up he had a big studio microphone in front of his Martin.

Great analysis. Great story about this classic song. Speaking of strange song origins:
“Just a Song Before I Go” by Graham Nash was written when someone asked him or challenged him to see if he could write a song in a half hour before he got on a plane. He wrote it in 20 minutes. ...Just A Song Before I go.
“Papa” John Phillips of The Mamas And The Papas got a royalty check for a song on a Judy Collins album. He called her up and said there’s been some confusion about this since he doesn’t know anything about this song called “Me and My Uncle”. She told him how they were all drinking Tequila after a show in a hotel room in the Southwest and they started singing songs while she ran a tape recorder. he sang and played guitar, composing the song on the spot. What’s amazing is that the song “me and my uncle” contains a very detailed and somewhat complicated story with something of a plot twist at the end. It’s pretty amazing to me that someone could write a song like that in the midst of an alcoholic blackout. John Phillips would joke for many years that he would remember the song more and more with every royalty check that he received. It ended up being one of the songs that was performed very often by Grateful Dead.

Oh...the Central Park concert when they are playing 'The late great Johnny Ace' and the fellow breaks out onto the stage and Simon moves out of the way and the security officers race on murmuring and the guitar feeds back...and then he continues with the song like nothing happened. When you mentioned technology, I think of the old days where Sinatra or Streisand recorded in front of a 60 piece orchestra and Ella Fitzgerald recorded with The Count Basie or Duke Ellington Orchestra. They played off of each other and made adjustments and reacted to each other as they went. Now they sit in a little booth singing to a recorded track put down by musicians that may have been in separate countries or even continents as they laid down their tracks. Something (like spontaneity) gets lost.

My favorite thing you talked about Fil was the just Simon's songwriting. Especially the mention of lines from "The Sounds of Silence"
It was one of my most favorite songs( I loved my R&R but was also into the great songwriters at that time...Cat Stevens,James Taylor, etc like that... there was just sooo much great music happening during that those years what a great time to be around!)when I was a teen back in the late 60s and 70s. Then it was popular to call into radio stations and ask the DJ to dedicate a song to whoever, a boyfriend, a girlfriend or just someone who was a friend and ask to have a song dedicated for a special reason or occasion. This song dedicated to me and the lyrics meant a whole lot to me, that's why my friends did it..I had written a paper on it in literature class my junior year in high school. Listening to this song used to put into deep thinking... and I would tear up 'cause I knew there was 100%truth in these words at THAT time.
All that aside, Paul Simon saw what how things were headed and what was coming. And it's all too true now. It's more poignant than ever. Thanks for also doing the great songwriters Fil!🙂

yes, yes, and yes, Fil. 7:34 "somebody telling you a story" this sums up my interests quite nicely. Good storytelling is all I'm really attracted to: music, written word, movies, theatre... even humble youtubers :D
so what is it that makes me include Fil in my extremely limited subs? he tells the story of music. analytically and passionately. cheers.

Back in 8th grade in the mid-'70s, the boys in our class were taken to the local Catholic seminary for a field trip, and the only thing i remember is that one of the young seminarians who showed us his living quarters had Still Crazy After All These Years on his turntable and talked about some of its songs. I guess I was expecting Gregorian chants, but it was Paul Simon.

Thanks so much for this one, Fil! I think my only other comment to one of your videos was a request for Paul Simon - really appreciate it. If you haven't yet discovered it, there's a video of his appearance on the Dick Cavett Show, where he picks up his guitar to play an unfinished version of "Still Crazy After all These Years", while describing his songwriting process. It may not be worth an analysis, but anyone interested in songwriting should love it.

Great work, Fil. I remember swinging by a long gone record store where i'd (we'd, some presents) buy the latest Shrapnel stuff. One morning, a long haired guy is asking for Paul Simon's "Graceland" I didn't know about it but George had it. Boughjt it myself not long after and loved it.
Lately "One Mans Ceiling Is Another Mans Floor", Robben Ford's "Truth". Bought this in the good old days.

I'm a lighting director. The three best memories of lighting performers was Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and Little Richard. Paul Simon actually asked to meet me and discuss the lighting. In retrospect I'm surprised I didn't form a puddle telling him how much I loved Simon and Garfunkel, but maintained composure, and stood there star struck, listening to his concerns.

YES! Thank you, Fil ! The day AUTOTUNE was invented was truly the day the music died. Used to be that it was the artist who brought the talent, instrumentally, vocally, and/or writing the song. Now it’s 100% image, and the only artist that matters is the producer. Damn all robot music to Hell! AUTOTUNE MUST CEASE!

There no denying that Paul Simon is an excellent songwriter along with his other talents. his early years with Art Garfunkel saw great harmonizing, excellent analysis and break down on Paul and this track. thanks for this one on Paul Simon.

...I think Paul hates this song, but it is such an upbeat, pop classic that has probably made him so much money that he has to tolerate it and include it in his gigs...thumbs up, Fil...

In the 90s I worked for a music distribution company, CDs,videos etc. They used to have drawings for concert tickets, this time I was fortunate to win tickets to Paul Simon. This was his Rhythm of the Saints tour. I wasn't sure what to expect. For this project he was using many Brazilian musicians and percussionists as well as some musicians from the Graceland tour, Steve Gadd and Michael Brecker as well . This is the most festive indoor concert that I have ever been to. Paul was the host of this huge party. Back then it was not much different than the video that you streamed. Everyone knew most of the songs and Paul joined in singing with us. Lol. It is still in my top 3 concerts that I ever attended.

I was privileged to see Paul Simon just over two years ago. Yes, this song made the crowd wild, but the real treasures were the other musicians on the stage. I know the venue manager, and she told me that the previous gig had been outdoors, and the gear had gotten wet. They asked if they could dry out their instruments. She told me that walking through that empty convention hall with all those old drums and other percussive instruments out on tables to dry was like walking through a museum. I also have to add that Paul Simon has the best live sound I have ever heard.
