Carly Simon's music is the way I always thought it should be.
@kimmo maki 'will you marry me'? ..sorry, .i just HAD to(!* ~'*!
I see what you did there 😂
Carly, Carole and Joni, three amazing singer/songwriters.
And Joan Baez.....
I've had a crush on Carly for many years and it continues!
Fil’s reaction videos should be taught as a music appreciation course.
Jonny Roxx I agree. Fil does a great job analyzing the era as well as the music and musicians.
Love Carly's music from the early 70's. I remember listening to her on the radio at the community swimming pool along with everyone else that was popular in the early 70's. What a great time period that was.👍😎🤘
I have exactly the same memory. Community swimming pool included!
@@marmotsongs 👍😃
It was a GREAT time! Especially musically. ☺️
My favorite is Let the River Run from..working girl movie
I love Carly! Pure talent unlike the garbage today.
HERE, HERE!
The 'That's the way I always heard It should be' song that she co-wrote was an incredible piece that I think was at least one of her best, even though it was pretty dark, and even called it a weird song when she performed it. It's not weird if you grew up in that time period (which we did) and lived through family life.
There's a clip of her performing it from this same concert on here.
Imagine, writing this tune while she was waiting for Cat Steven's to arrive. Carly's awesome...
Actually, she would have been waiting for James Taylor.
czcams.com/video/4WM_R-6AKHE/video.html
Cassandra Morrison Carolyn was correct. Anticipation was “about” waiting for Cat Stevens to arrive for their first date. She opened for him on tour. Cat and James weren’t the only famous talents she hooked up with. Jack Nicholson, Kris Kristofferson, Terrence Malick, Michael Crichton, Jeremy Irons, Mick Jagger. And those (except Irons) are the ones she herself talks about in her book.
Carly definitely wrote and performed some of the greatest music ever. She is one of my favorite artists. ❤ Your analysis!
My weekend is now complete. I have had my wings of pegasus analysis video. 🤘
Wow! Where did the time go? She's 73 now! I wonder how shes doing?
You're killin' me, Fil! All these videos are dragging up memories for me that I had completely forgotten! - My friend and I, cruising to the beach in her Chevy Nova, hatchback open, speakers blaring- and us singing, "Stay right here, 'cuz these are the good ol' days!" At that time, I had no idea how prophetic those lyrics are. Man, we were so fortunate at that time, to have these great artists, performing the soundtrack to our lives!
Laurie Kane: Absolutely! That era was the Cambrian explosion of music. Nothing came close to it before OR after!!
Carly Simon has always been an important musician to me. I have at least eight vinyl albums of hers that I don't ever want to part with. I love her. In the late 70's even my plants thrived as I began listening to Carly's music while I was suffering from an extended bout of depression. Carly's ability to convey a range of feelings through her music, lyrics and voice was my saving grace at a very difficult time.
Great featuring Carly here, I'll cut to the chase and say She Was HOT!!. sue me ;) next is this tune is great. Good ol' days....
Stole my words. I'm a sucker for an overbite.
@@joejones5491 yep. no secrets.
Fil, I'm 65 and those definitely were the good ol days as far as music goes. Music started going downhill after the very early 1990s. Love your videos.
@@daviddixon6408 agreed
Dang Fil! You're hitting all the best of the singer songwriters. Carly Simon was one of the few 'modern' singers my late father considered a worthy artist and whom we could both listen to. Great video as always.
Yes it was used on a ketchup commercial. The bottle was upside down waiting for the stuff to come out, while she sang anticipation
I think of her every time I have French Fries.
You'll say Chips.
The commercial did not use her recording. It was someone else singing.
I recall the commercial, just as you describe with the song "Anticipation" playing while you wait for the ketchup to ooze out of the bottle. I do believe it was for Heinz ketchup. It was a clever idea, I always assumed it was the real Carly singing it. Now we are talking a long time ago!
I remember that ketchup commercial well...it was Heinz and it is really slow....I know because I have 6 bottles of it..perfect song for that commercial!!
I’m 58 and this is amazing! It’s like you’re a time traveler who was born to be a 1968-1990 rocker and now you find yourself both young and in the future. I know you must have been there back then and I think I saw you tuning Paul Kossoffs guitar at some point. You’re spot on.
Just a side note ... a few LEGENDARY album covers as well. :)
oh yea!
I distinctly remember the Playing Possum album cover. My uncle had that album in the mid-70s. Those boots!!
@@kbusby4824 "Being attractive sexually is not something which I feel guilty about or embarrassed by in any way", Carly told a Rolling Stone reporter soon after Playing Possum was released in 1975."
No Secrets album cover....burned into my brain forever.
@@Shendaal Mine as well. Those nipples!!
This song really showed me why I love music so much, I was not feeling good before I listened to this song, This was always my favorite Carly Simon song. This version is incredible, never realized how short the song was, but it is really upbeat. She has a big smile on her face while she is singing it. I loved it when the drums came in, was just not expecting them on the all acoustic track. Just a great performance, I did not realize how many albums she had put out or how well they had done. The song changed my mood, still thinking about the melody, she could make a great melody to a song. I had just been reading my daily devotion before I listened to this and it was about music. People should really be grateful for music that moves them.Jim
What a fantastic version of the song! It's great to watch the onstage interplay between Carly and the band.
thanks Fil, those were the good old days
Yes! These are good old days! Just made my Sunday evening. Thanks for your analysis of this great talented lady.
She was a beauty. Wow. Great video breakdown.
Carly Simon! about time Filip, you are so right about the Good Ole' Days, and they are GONE, Noises back stage, ppl walking in front of the musicians, just all kinds of stuff going on, lol! And the Artists just kept on keeping on! 50's , 60's, 70's great era for music, nothing like those times, EVER AGAIN! Your analysis is Brilliant on Carly, thanks RAWK! \M/
The '80s weren't too shabby either.
🤘
Not only a great singer songwriter, but one of the most beautiful woman ever the guys all had a crush on her back then.
The 70's were huge for music. From the 1910 Fruitgum Company to Carly, to Led Zeppelin, and so many bands you cant name them, the range of music was so much fun
Wow...just wow. Saturday my niece was thumbing through my old vinyl and tossed 1910 Fruitgum Company on the turntable. I hadn't played it in a couple of decades. Are you my spirit animal? 😀😀😀
@@NuclearGrizzly Ha! I have an old song of theirs called Reflections from the Looking Glass in my collection, played it 2 days ago on random lol
Great song writer, great singer and fantastic musician.
beautiful person. beautiful voice. so freakin talented.
Thanks for covering Carly, she is certainly a legend and deserves to be credited as one of the best singer songwriters of our time. And yes she is "Hot".
😂
If you're "of a certain age" and from the States, you may remember this being used in a ketchup commercial, demonstrating how thick and slow the pour was from the bottle. It was the "anticipation" part that was used.
Very good composer ! Love her stuff ! Good on piano and guitar as well ... not a virtuoso on either instrument , but played some very tasteful parts for her music ... she’s a real Entertainer
The next song at the piano is a GREAT performance of That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be
👍
Pass the ketchup! James Taylor was a lucky man! I love her voice. Thanks Fil! Peace!🤘
Great "pass the ketchup" reference. Nobody under 50 will get it, though. 😎
@@TheCaveman46 I love it when they don't get it 🤣🤣✌
That Heinz commercial from 1977 starred a Very young Corey Feldman.
@@TheCaveman46 Fil probably anticipated this.
👍
Thanks again Fil .. wealth of information on another legend ...thumbs up
These are the good old days. By which I mean the 1970s. This just reminds me of how lucky we were (those of us who were growing up back then) to have had so much talent all around us. She still owns my favorite Bond track of all time.
Fantastic. Thank-you for concentrating on the women singer-songwriters in some of your vids!
On this "Anticipation" video by Carly Simon not knowing much about her was impressed with her performance. She sings well, and her feeling & delivering her song I was impressed with. Obviously she's young here & n her prime, & also gorgeous!!
One more beautiful woman!!’ I adore her. She is badass! Those were some good old days listening to this on the transistor radio! Thanks for not interrupting her performance!!!
Still love her. Who else could possibly get Mick Jagger to come be her back up singer, for free no less, on "You're so vain"?
👍
Yes. And if memory serves the liner notes on the album do not even credit Jagger doing back-up vocals. Now excuse me while I go verify if that is actually true (cuz my memory hasn't been serving me properly as of late - 😁).
Yep...according to Wikipedia anyway Jagger isn't mentioned. He just happened to call Carly at the studio at the moment they were laying this down and she said come on over and sing with us. Pretty cool that he did that and apparently didn't care about compensation.
What is interesting in this performance is for a person so crippled with stage fright she looks and sings like she's having so much fun. She's gleaming.
You're So Vain was also featured in the movie Dick. In one of the best sequences in that movie. It's during the punchline of the movie.
She is a national treasure and I love that she performed that song barefoot. God I miss the 60s & 70s!
I remembered her at folk festival weekends and she would write songs on a 8x10 sheet of paper and sing rough draft that night.she was sweet and soft spoken.yes those were the good ole days by 2020 music is awerful
Always deep stuff in her lyrics. The "Torch" album is one of my favorites.
Torch - thank you!! It is also one of my favs of all time, any artist. Not a Day Goes By, The Blue of Blues is Mostly Gray .. ALL on it such great songs. Her voice was in its absolute prime those years. Her unmistakeable voice and smooth flowing voice. Her highs and unique lower registry is so indelibly in my head, noticeable and coveted by millions. She always could, like the finest silk and softness when she wanted, hit emotional notes with beautifully chosen phrasing and emphasis. She still could at any moment or song add some slight growl on notes when she found it comfortable.
What a babe she was. James Taylor thought so. And she wrote great songs. Thanks Fil.
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't she write your so vain about James Taylor?
@@meliplay I haven't heard that. Maybe Warren Beatty.
@@bassmaster1953 could be my memory is a little foggy on it it sucks getting old lol I used to be a walking rock and roll encyclopedia
@@bassmaster1953 That was the hook of the song. I have heard that it was Mick Jagger, Warren Beatty. Everyone was speculating. From the lifestyle I think it was Mick. He was into showing off, and starting to date David Bowie. Glam Rock.

Very famous/infamous stage fright. Saw her in the 90s, one of the best concerts I've ever seen!
What a great plethora and of women writers and performers were in the '70's. Such a great time of talented ladies! Thanks for this. I was a teenager during that time and it brings back Wonder memories. 💕
They were indeed the good old days....my favorite..Thats the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be...Carly is simply the best! Thanks Fil for your thoughts👍👍
A stellar writer by any standard. And a wonderful performance. Great video and comments Fil. Thanks....Paul
I love the explanation Klauss Voorman gives for the intro Bass lick on “ You’re so Vain “
Klauss is an interesting guy , he also played the intro Recorder on “ Mighty Quinn “ , and played bass on the song ... he’d just learned the bass guitar , courtesy of mostly George Harrison helping him out , when he ( Klauss ) realized he couldn’t compete as a guitarist . Carly always had the best players on her LPs ... smart woman
I won this album back in 71' from a radio station contest (I think it was like be the 10th caller and rip us off for this album) I have been a fan every since then. Thanks Fil for another great video !
Cool!
Thanks so much for appreciating this amazing song-writer. Just out of interest, there is a great book by Sheila Weller called „Girls Like Us“ about Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell and Carole King, their music, lives, writing and the influence on women, starting especially in the late 60‘s.
..love Carly Simon .....thx Fil ....cheers
You Belong To Me is my favorite of hers. So much going on in that song.
I love that song too.
Oh yes. Hello . One of my first purchased singles. I loved it . ♡♡
I have her greatest hits album. 😊😎😍 love her songs, her voice everything.💖💘Storyteller.😊They where the good ole days.😔
Fil....I have always said that the true artist for me is one that can write, compose and play. Too many things today only sound good because they were made in a studio. I have seen some acts outside of the studio that we’re just not very good.
The 1st song I heard from her was Nobody Does it Better because I'm a Bond fan. And then I heard more songs. Carly is a Queen.
I'm old. I had her album with this song. Those were the good old days. Yep.
You’re on a roll friend ! Love this addition !
I remember what a huge hit Youre So Vain was and how it had a mysterious quality due to Jagger being on the cut, singing with Carly towards the end. People would think it was about Mr. Vain : Jagger. However she eventually cleared it up saying it was about some famous rich guy she'd had a relationship with. Im sure that was the reason she picked Jagger for the vocals, to create the mystery ! I saw her once, as I was coming out of the subway and turned the corner at 89th St and Central Park West, the back side of the Dakota, where John and Yoko also lived. She and James lived there too, at the time. I lived a block away and once saw Yoko at the corner Korean deli, shopping. New York is full of moments like those. I met many during my taxi years.
Anticipation: since we don't know what will happen in the future, we should enjoy the present -- which will be referred to as the "the good old days" when we discuss our earlier lives as we age.
I was so fortunate to have grown up in the 60's and 70's . The music was absolutely AMAZING , concerts were cheap ( 5 to 7 dollars ) and we saw so many bands and musicians that will never have an equal . Carly set the standard females musicians and her albums became part of my life . But , looking back she set the standard for the girls and women I was attracted to . Obviously she is a very beautiful woman . But , it was her talent , her sense of humor and her insight on people that made her the type of woman I wanted to be around . The " I'm pretty , so I don't need to be interesting , fun to be around ( have a sense of humor ) or insightful girls " rated zero with me . Carly .... was THE woman for many men in those days . PK
You've really done your homework Bro. Thanks so much for spotlighting Carley. She is one of my favorites.
Thanks Fil for showcasing such a massively talented and beautiful artist as Carly. Enjoyed your video!🌹
She is part of that Singer Songwriter Era that had tons of talent and she had a great Tan also .. I have two Quadraphonic Vinyl albums by her....They are super rare..
Fil you're on a roll with singer songwriter's but Carly was special (aside from my physical attraction to her) my favorite after you're so vain is her performance of it happens every day with Les paul prettiest thing I've ever heard thanks for posting
Fil, The Hinze Ketchup commerical was a natural fit. In the commerical. A bottle of Ketchup was upended. As you were watching the Ketchup take it's time slowly flowing out oh the bottle. Anticipation was being played. Just that commerical alone skyrocketed her career.
But just that Smile. Thanks again Fil.
Rock on !.
Yeah I've just seen it! 😂
Yes, my dear Fil, those were the good old days. I love the music of the 70's. There were so so many good artists and one had to stay one step ahead to even be a contender. Thank you so much for you insights and wonderful commentary. Carly's music is a beautiful piece of the musical mosaic that you are reminding us of with your analyses of these gifted musicians. Good job Fil! :)
I’ve always loved this song. Thanks for posting this.
I love her unique style and writing
Another good video Fil. It's so cool how you do a lot of old school music, and how you do your research on the artist. It's obvious you love music, and you really appreciate music. Man, Carly was such a cutie pie. Remembering the days holding those album covers up with one hand. I mean, she was really photojentic. ROCK!
Funny thing about this song for me as a child I was Anticipating what the future would be like? now my heart sings "Those were the days my fiends" Carly Simon is another great singer/songwriter and musician. You yet to hit a sour note with your analysis Fil, there all great! thanks!
Mel Tillis was a country artist who stammored when he spoke but not when he sang
Another interesting Rock Background vocal to listen to is "Riders On The Storm," by The Doors. In the chorus, you can hear Jim sing the lyrics, then, in a spooky whisper, he sings his own back up. It gave me goosebumps the 1st time I heard it! 😮
You're smile during the video playback, said it all.
I was so lucky to be there back in those days. You had Carly, Carole King, James Taylor, Neil Diamond, Crosby,Stills and Nash and more ........... They definitely were the great old days!!!!!!!!
👍
As a kid in the 70's with an older sister, I was well dipped into Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell, and albums like Jesus Christ Super Star, The 5th Dimension(early Marilyn McCoo. ) Unbelievable. What beautiful people... Nice video. Thank you.
She was very popular. Her songs were just pleasant and relatable. She had terrible stage fright but you never could tell. She and James Taylor were the romantic item of the day.
I . Love. Carly. Period. 💖
Solid performance. Before your commentary in her performance I thought that it was odd that she had stage fright and delivered this so well. It’s true what you said: Saturday Night Live she pre recorded, “You’re So Vain,” due to her stage fright. Also, I remember the Heinz Ketchup commercial well as a youngster. Terrific singer though.
There aren't enough thumbs up for this video!! Excellent video and comments. I lived through this music. Such a wonderful and inspiring period. Nick Drake although short lived was also part of his music but his influential is still being felt today. Please please do a video on him. He was an excellent guitarist and fantastic songwriter!! 😀 Thanks!!!!
Thanks!
She was right those are the good old days. When, and your so right Fil , not only sing but be able to play your instrument. Most of the great singer songwriter also were good if not great musicians. Love Carly she was a power house performer singer songwriter
👍
A true talent, Carly will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.
Omg I love this! I was a kid in the 70's and I remember all this super amazing music! I fully enjoyed listening to it back then and it's cool to learn her music and life story so long after the fact via your video. Thanks again for another great and knowledge packed vid!
Nicely done Fil! As always love your analysys as well as your appreciation for the early 70's singer/songwriters. What a special breed and time.
The other singing Simon sister was Joanna Simon. Joanna Simon was a well-known opera singer in the 1960's and 1970's. She later dated Walter Cronkite. Carly Simon is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Her lyrics were both thoughtful and insightful. No Secrets was a great album!
"These are the good old days" has always been one of my favorite lyrics of all time. And it makes TOTAL sense. Whatever we are doing RIGHT NOW in our lives...later on...as we get older and look back...actually ARE the good old days we will look back on, remember and love--from the perspective of the future that we look back from. This helps us not to take things for granted. Not to take the present for granted...for THESE are the good old days that we will eventually look back on.
👍
These are the good old days....says it all.
Such an innovative writer and a strong vocalist. I'm glad she worked to overcome her anxieties. We would all be poorer for it if she had never pursued a music career.
Cheers for this. Great music, great artist. I have to say, i'm really impressed by you, your knowledge and the way you pass that on. Wow. Thanks again. Looking forward to what else you're gonna review. Love, Nancy from Amsterdam ✌🎵❤
Great reaction! Brings back good memories.
Love Carly and her music.
* Hi , Fil !! Oh.. "She's So Impressive :) She Has A Really A Lovely Voice And She Playing The Guitar As Well" So ; A Really Great Performance Alive !!!!!

Carly Simon was hugely popular in the early seventies and rightfully so. Fil is hitting all the best chosen examples of 60s-70s female singer-songwriters. I remember the days where you couldn't turn on AM radio without hearing Carly or Karen Carpenter. But please do not forget Laura Nyro !
HI FIL YOU DO A VERY GOOD JOB LIKE ALWAYS THANKYOU FOR WHAT YOU DO. LOVE TO WATCH YOUR VIDEOES. CARLYS MY GIRL GOOD SINGER. PEACE AND LOVE
I’m so glad that I have stumbled across you.Had a little binge watch and then had to subscribe. I love your choices and your analysis. Many of my all time legends to be found here 😊
Thanks!
My favorite female singer/songwriter of all time !
You touched on a couple of things that my 5th grade band teacher taught us. Number one was you will get over your stage fright the better you get at your instrument. So he told us to practice more. And also, he said, since I was on trombone, if your slide ever knocks over your music stand just look to the guy next to you and play off of his music do not let it distract you one bit. I never knock the music stand over, but I see what he was saying. And I had stage fright bad up until about the eighth grade. Peace!
@Brad Yes, 26 is a far cry from 11! By the time I was 13 I had gotten over it mostly. I was 1st trombone in the 3 school bands in which I played. A shame I haven't picked one up for 40 years 😕 but, work. It always helps when you have someone to lean on though, for sure.
@Brad yeah we need to get Fil to do some Bill Withers and Dobie Gray! Both very underappreciated. Peace!
@Brad Bill Withers had a couple of songs - Lean On Me was one of his (I assumed you knew that since you quoted the song) and the first song I remember him doing was "Use Me".
Dobie Gray had a song called "Drift Away" that was Huge back in 1973. Both of them deserve a little love!
Peace!
Thank You for celebrating Women’s History Month with the legendary Carly Simon. She didn’t just have stage-fright, but a a severe anxiety disorder, with major panic attacks. I have the same thing. Music saved my life. As soon as I hit the first note, the anxiety fell away. It’s the best drug. Getting on that stage and getting to the first note, however, is brutal, and requires an incredibly high degree of courage and commitment.
Thank You, Dear Fil. These are the good old days. ❤️
☺
Carly is vibrant, thank you for spotlighting this great Jagger lookalike, have you heard her first album with that great tune about watching the world end ~ 'save me a space surrounded with friendly faces' ~ You are awesome! Thank you for the joy ~
☺
Hello Fil, There is a video here on YT that discusses Carly Simon's biggest hit "You're So Vain." It mentions that Mick Jagger is singing background vocals. If you listen carefully, his singing is apparent as Carly ends all of her vocal lines smoothly in rhythm with the song, while Nick's staccato approach stands apart from the general flow of the song. Check it out I think you will find it interesting. 🙂
DON'T FORGET Comin' Around Again--the video on YT has great family movies of her as an adorable brat. And the song is as good as any she has ever written!!!
