Atlas : Part 1 - Painting Tutorial

- Hello Everyone,
+This is Part 1 of a start-to-finish watercolor painting demonstration recorded in real-time. In this video, I cover intention, composition, values, and color - as well as interpretation, design, formatting, drawing, sketching, and perspective, etc.
+The scene depicts two of the most iconic scenes in all of New York City - the neo-Gothic St Patrick's Cathedral from around 1900, and the Art Deco masterpiece from 1937. It features the iconic bronze statue of the Greek Titan Atlas - struggling to hold up the heavens. And the focus of this painting is less about the actual objects than the negative space between - across which they are in constant dialog.
Thanks for watching!
Tom

Thank you Thomas. I very much enjoy your drawing as well as your painting tutorials. It's always inspirational.
thank you
Beautiful drawing it's just gorgeous
Thank you so much 😀
Another great tutorial. I like the way the background cathedral had less contrast than the photo (serving the painting rather than trying to be accurate). You work has convinced me to start drawing again (I'm so out of practice - lol).
👏🙏🌞❣️
Could it finally be raining in NYC? Regardless, so glad to see you online again! Hope all is well w/ you.😊
Haha! It is!!!
I love the way you mix the drawing with the painting. Thank you Thomas for all this content and and for share with us your valuable knowledge.
Thanks for watching !
Tom, as always a brilliant tutorial explaining the 'Why' and a superb demonstration defining the 'How'. It seems inadequate to keep saying thank you, but its sincerely meant.
That's very kind Paul. You're welcome and thanks for watching
Thank you for this. It looks exciting ! I can’t understand people not liking the drawing part, I love drawing so will always enjoy doing as much as possible!
Maybe because it is the especially difficult part? 😂 I have done it sometimes with good results but the effort has been extraordinary. That's why I admire artists whose lines come out so naturally. I love Thomas's pencil handling and how he finishes it off with color afterwards leaves me amazed 😍🤩
@@RaquelViloria Yes, his work is amazing, especially his colour sense.
some feel it detracts from the painting - or tends to make it more rigid. i think it depends on the kind of result you are after
@@RaquelViloria thank you
@@JVSwailesBoudicca thank you
Beautiful art as always. I love watching your video's. I'm in NYC often and hope I just randomly run into you someday.
Thank you so much for watching
Wow is this amazing! I just bought one of your painting dvds and are super excited to learn your methods. Any advice how to learn architectural drawing/perspective?
Thanks so much - And yes. In my long-term course with Terracotta and Artists Network I have videos and downloads just on drawing. But I'll likely be adding content here for that as well
I think it's not a watercoulor in the original sense, it is couloring a drawing.
Did you watch or listen to the video? That’s what I describe
