Bravo, Bellissima, a whispering mood winding its way down a beautiful backstreet. Loved it.

Nice work Thomas
Thanks so much Kenny!
You are going too too very fast giving me a migraine. So down for goodness sake
This is a video short - it's supposed to be fast. I have a lot of content here on CZcams much of it in real-time - And all of it is free. So watch my other regular speed videos for goodness sake! And for the love of god - stop complaining!
The chance that mine don’t “pan out” is incredibly high… pretty much guaranteed in fact
Well my batting average is not exactly 1.000 either :)
You are so clever painting these sort of scenes and make it look so effortless. I would never consider a busy, chaotic side street like this as a subject.
Thanks so much
This is truly inspirational. I have subscribed. I have been really struggling to take my watercolour to the next level i.e. beyond "good beginner". The long form videos you have on your channel are gold dust to help really understand your thinking, process and technique. Your approach is certainly among the best I have seen (and I have seen a lot). Too many other people have videos at double speed which creates an unnecessary and unhelpful desire in the viewer to rush and too many have no commentary, but only music, which turns the tutorial into nothing more than a "look at me" show. You really take the time to slow the viewer down, explain your thinking and approach and it is therefore like being in a room with a master teacher. Thank you thank you thank you.
Thank you very much - Painting alone, I go a bit faster. But I think if I'm sincere about teaching anything, I want to try to explain what I'm doing and why
What Pencil do you use ..?
It's described in the video - Blackwing Palamino 602
I’m close to Marietta/Belpre area. Used to go to Athens a lot and Hocking for college. Nice painting!
thank you
Thank you, Tom for another great demonstration.
I watch a lot of watercolor channels. This is absolutely my favourite. Watching and listening to your process and thoughts makes me feel very lucky ❤
Thanks so very much!
Thanks as always. I liked the discussion of the 'time factor' of different brushes. I really like the way cheap flats run out of paint quickly, but on the other hand long riggers keep going and going. Both are very useful.
Yes! Sometimes the "best" brushes for a task aren't always the best - or most expensive - ones :)
Just amazing. Stunning work. Thank you very much for this video.
Thanks so much
丨thank you for drawing lessons and more
Thanks for watching
Thank you Thomas! I'm so happy that you decided to post more lessons recentely. And fortunately it happened exactly at the time when I basically gave up the watercolour after 4 years of almoust dayly practicing but being unhappy with results. Now I never miss your lessons and enjoy every single one of them, often I paint along with you and it makes me balanced and serene. Thank you!!
Thanks for watching
Many thanks Thomas for your generosity, actually I paid once for one your rocket course, was amazing and very helpful but it was for only 3 months, and time is fly❤
You're very welcome
Once again, Thomas, a very appreciative thank you for your time. You describe colour usage, composition, sunlight and shadows in an understandable logical way, which helps so much in learning to paint with watercolours. Good wishes to you and your little man Otis.
thanks so much ruth
Amazing... at your stage you took so much time for drawing 🙏
At my stage? The whole drawing took less than 30 minutes - while I was teaching, too - That doesn't seem so long.
@@thomaswschaller i meant at such experienced artist stage...still giving so much importance to drawing is...inspiring to me🙏
@@sujanithtottempudi2991 Drawing is the most important thing I do. I think of painting in watercolor as drawing - Drawing with shapes of value and color
Hi Thomas... excellent video...however I want to ask ...what if I do watercolor in section by section not classic washes from top to bottom...several washes? I love Louise De Masi style .. section by section...will it hamper my future artwork to do every painting like this?
Thank you - But of course that is something I can't answer. As a person and an instructor, I would never say that there is any one "right" or "wrong" way to paint. I'd say that if you're unsure of your "lane" - try various techniques or styles until one more clearly feels right to you. Then develop it as long as it feels correct. Eventually, you will develop a style all your own
You're not only inspirational but at the mean time giving me something to think about ART in general all the time! This episode reminds me THE GREAT ITALIAN ARTIST " GIOVANNI BATTISTA TIEPOLO" Great color combinations combine with lights and shadows ! As always, thanks for your generosity! Strong foundations gives best results !
Thanks so very much!
As always.. a great learning experience and opportunity. Thanks very much.
Thanks so much
After a frustrating afternoon drawing small (5x7") pencil sketches focused on simplification-and failing miserably-I have been properly schooled by your approach to this complex scene. Thank you!
I hope it helps! Thank you !
Just beautiful. Thank you for the extra time you've put into creating content to share with us.
Thank you for watching!
I think my style is based more on the Beaux-O style- just one look at my attempted paintings and you'll say "Who is this clown?!"!
Thanks TS....
you're welcome
Hi Thomas, I hope you’re doing well. I’ve been there.
Love your style Thomas. I note that you only use a couple of pencils to get the effect - when I started drawing my teacher implied the need for the whole range of pencils from lightest hards to darkest bolds but I rarely see any artist use them … what are your thoughts please?
🙏😇
I've been drawn to your videos as of late. The way that you plan out your paintings and explain to the viewers why you approach the painting the way you do is extremely helpful. You sort of have a 'professor' persona, along with a down to earth personality, which I really appreciate. Thank you.
Thanks very much - I am certainly no professor - so I don't know how to take that comment. But I just want to try to share as clearly as I can
What a beautiful light, I'm charmed. Thanks a lot
Thanks for sharing, I'm learning so much with you. I have a question, Do you strech your paper before paint?
For full sheets or larger - yes - For 1/2 sheets or smaller - no
It was really good to actually watch you painting the graduated wash, it is one of the many effects I admire in your work. It was also very useful to me, although I did become a bit nervous for you when you decided to add more colour to the bottom of the sky! Of course it worked but for me that would have been a "start again" situation.
Thanks so much for watching!
First, I love your paintings so much! So, I feel it’s a privilege to watch you paint and to hear your thoughts and explanations. I feel I learn a lot from you. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and artistry 🙏🏻🩵
Thank you so much Judith - That means a lot . I appreciate it
The painting is of a class, something one expects from you from viewing your paintings over time and at theTWSA. Your answer to the sky fading more than expect was truly a lesson one can use. However, the first part of the presentation was a good education on preparation of a painting, beginning with keeping ones sketches (few remain but will correct). Next the actual drawing for the painting from your sketch itself was a good lesson and reducing the sky to better fit the subject versus just using the size selected. Two other points for me to remember, omit those hordes of tourists if it makes a better painting, and the decision to make it a dusk time period versus the typical blue of Greek paintings. Thank you for being so generous.
Thanks so much for watching
This is the first time viewing your videos, and I have really enjoyed your style and instruction. I don't even know what that person meant by their criticism. This painting reads as a mix between watercolor painting and urban sketching. I love it!! Please don't let that miserable person rent space in your head. I look forward to watching more of your videos. I love the sounds of the City in the background. Cheers from Buffalo.❤
Thanks so much for watching - And not to worry. It's CZcams - where some people just need to be negative . Plus I live in NYC where unsolicited opinions are a dime a dozen ! :) Doesn't bother me.
Genial!!!
Excellent!❤ Love your work Thomas Schaller. I'm new to painting. Saw a few a your videos just yesterday. Very impressive! I'm actually following along with one of your videos today. The black cat on a step. 😊 My new hobby of painting is so addictive!
Great! Happy Painting
Great idea!!
What a wonderful lesson! I enjoyed every second of it. Probably I will even dare to paint it with you. So good explained. Thank you very much Thomas.
Thanks very much
That's beautiful
Thank you again for sharing . This is an interesting take on the ruins, colour wise and it certainly looks dream like! Where I live in Wales uk we have lots of ruined castles some more intact than others ! I laughed at the comments from your nephew about clearing up the yard! We took a nephew to 12 c Raglan Castle on the border with England . Some remedial work was being done on it so there was scaffolding around parts of it. My nephew’s comment was “ I don’t want to go there ,it isn’t finished yet ! ‘ Have you any sketches of uk castles in your sketch books ? Be good to see your rendition of some castles …or very old river bridges here?! Thanks again for a happy time watching…and influencing my watercolour efforts ! 56:19 56:19
Thanks! I've painted so many UK castles
"Don't you hate it when clichés are true". So ironically funny. Thank you again for an enjoyable and informative video. So much appreciation and admiration for your work. Greetings from South Africa.
Haha! Thanks for watching!
Wow, it's so powerful the sizes of everything in confront to the humans, really fantastic shading, thank you ❤❤❤
Bellissimo❤❤❤
Hi Thomas, we went last year and you can still go to Olympia and walk right up to the ruins and touch them
That's so good to know - Thanks
thank you so so much!
Thanks
A simple subject and a stunning rendition Thomas, and its only taken you 40 years to get around to painting it!! Get that box of sketchbooks opened up and dusted off, so we can see more!
There are so many !!! I had forgotten - Looks like I'll be very busy
I learn so much from your narration. I appreciate and need the reminders, every time you discuss painting the shadows not the light, and discuss the way you use values and how you're always considering the interplay of horizontals and verticals, cools and warms etc. I need to hear this many many times so I will keep watching your videos in the hopes that with time and practice these things sink in for me.
You're very kind! Thank you so much
This is AWESOME tutorial! Thank you so much!!!🥰
Thank you!
Hi Tom , I trust you are well , I have watched this stunning painting form it's inception to completion and just wanted to know that , while drawing the left pillar of the arch , have you drawn it slightly leaning to the left or it's a camera distortion. It's a very fascinating element of your drawing and perspective , would love to have your response please , thanks , Ravi
