Ahhh, the wheelie. She can certainly be a cruel mistress, but does she have to be? My contention is no. It boils down to three things IN MY OPINION:
1) Use your torso to get the front wheel up.
2) KEEP YOUR ARMS STRAIGHT!
3) Don't rely on pedal power to keep the front wheel up. Just deliver enough input to maintain the balance point.
I firmly believe that you'll find success if you adhere to the above input.
Now, you have to factor in some time to get comfortable finding that balance point I speak of. I'd suggest a few things for that:
1) Find a nice grass field with short grass and a subtle slope. Going uphill makes it a bit easier. Flat pedals might not be a bad idea either.
2) COMMIT and find that balance point...then blow right past it! Make sure to get your feet off the pedals of course.
3) Play around with gear choice. It'll take some time, but you'll find the optimum gear for this practice setting soon enough.
Find your spot, find your proper gear selection, commit to finding the balance point, and HAVE FUN!!
Peace out dumpers!

I've watched tons of wheelie tutorials, but this is the first time that addressed a problem I was having that wasn't mentioned until now; me trying to use my leg/pedaling to keep the front wheel up, which resulted in me basically accelerating the whole time and trying to keep up. Thanks for a very helpful video that really provided some key insight! Cheers!
That’s great to hear! You are very welcome!
If you think this vid was great, try one of his Ride Series Classes. His teaching style adapts to each individual person in class.
I'm 56 and can now wheelie my Trek far enough to make my wife fear for my safety! Go balls out Brother!
That's why you're a legend Richard! Tell your wife you've got it under control
I can almost whellie and im 10
gotta beef up that life insurance claim my brother
That’s awesome! I’m 53 and starting to work on this. Also working on drops. That’s not going so well. Hoping Rich can help me.
I'm 63 and almost there. ( a few yards but drop down) I will keep Drew's tips in mind on my practice session today!
dudeeeeee!!!!!! i can do a wheelie down my street now! Thank you so much, and for the people learning, all i have to say is to have faith and keep practicing
That's awesome Trevor!! Keep it up

I have found a very easy way to get the initial lift on wheelies without using any energy (which is key when learning because the lift can get tiring) is to just grab a tiny bit of front brake just before lift to dive the front suspension and then lean back with the rebound of the fork. Works the same on motorcycles, like a charm.
Great input!
ty
Yeah i use to do like tat bro same💜 but in tat way I wasn't able to do longer wheelie .
that is the right method
What a hardcore intro and smooth wheelie while talking
awesome video man!! im in my 40's and i learned to wheelie about 3months ago watching vids like this now I do wheelies like forest gump does running!
So you did this in 3 months? Wow. Just gave me encouragement. I'll practice again after work
When I first started watching your videos, I wasn't so sure about you Rich. I gotta hand it to you, you're an awesome coach and mentor.
Aaron, you're not alone in that feeling my man. I'm glad I grew on you like a fungus though and I truly appreciate that compliment!
@@richdrewtherideseries i loved you from the first video. ha no joke first video i saw was the drop video and I was like this dude is sweet. what up Bros! this is how you do da drop!
Hey Rich.
I'm currently practicing my wheelies while in Lockdown. I'm making a progression series on my channel.
czcams.com/video/gxTYd5Uwn8Y/video.html
I must say, after watching many videos I'm not too sure who to trust anymore. Some say that initial pedal power is what you need to lift. Others say it's in the torso. I don't feel anybody is wrong. I think it has more to do with how comfortable you are with what method. But me... I'm going to try your methods. At the moment I have about 6 days of footage that still needs to be processed but I'll give a shout out to you when it comes to your tips. I find it hard keeping the arms straight though. My hips don't want to work in my favour.
West Coast Mountain Biker can you do it now?
Thanks for the awesome breakdown!
I've been watching dozens of wheelie videos. After watching your's, it's really coming together. Rich Drew has the best how to videos for MTB. Thank you Rich!!!
That’s awesome Kevin! Just take your time and work to get more comfortable with that balance point.
Yeah, youre right this guy is the best wheelie mentor
By far the best "how to wheelie a bike" vid on utbe..hahaha funny and lots of very good info..
GT Realm Thank you GT! I dig hearing feedback like this.
That "hips don't lie" was the lightbulb for me 😂😂
"I can feel it in my plums." Brilliant!!! I laughed out loud at that. Off to practise some more.
Thank you for the tips and insights. Good stuff, Maestro. Spring looks nice where you are.
YES! I'm glad you liked that one. It kind of just worked itself in there. Spring has been a bit rainy here unfortunately.
I'm 46 and have never been able to do wheelies or decent bunny hops or really anything cool. Hopefully i can start learning how. It always bothered me that I've been riding my whole life and never had the skills to do any of these things. Thanks for the videos. I'm gonna keep practicing.
first time checking out this channel and i love your instruction style.
Thanks Justin! Glad you found it my man.
Great content...van in background is seriously RAD...but with nuance!!!! Your teaching method is the best.
Thanks Todd!! I didn't even realize the van was in the background ;)
Don’t fear what lies beyond the balance point. Keep videos like this coming Rich
Indeed Joey!! Nothing to fear! I'll do my best to keep them coming.
that's my biggest problem with committing, worrying about falling off the back
best damn wheelie video ever. I'm 44 and about to start my wheelie journey on a 29" BMX bike
Heck yeah, I love to hear that!
This is the best wheelie video I have ever watched and honestly I’m pretty sure once I get back on my bike I’m gonna be able to do long wheelies and I’m definitely subscribing! Thank you so much 💪❤️💯
Best part of this video is now I can keep watching it to learn. Best tutorial I've seen.
Best wheelie tutorial on CZcams! Thank you :D
In my early 50s. Never tried to wheelie as a youngster, but I'm learning now. One thing I would add it to not look down (like at your wheel). Keep your head up/back, maybe focus on a distant object. As soon as you start tilting your head forward, your wheel is going to go down. Think of it like this...your head is like a 15 lbs pendulum...if you swing it forward, you've just shifted your ballance point significantly.
15 lbs...THAT'S A HEAVY HEAD! HAHA! Great input Ron
Brilliant stuff Rich. Love the spandex leotard. Takes me back.
Dude...you said you can “wheelie any bike and so can you”...then you got on the exact Pivot Vault that I own. Haha...sick bike! Great tutorial!
Rich. Best videos I’ve seen online ever. You completely take things apart and explain in a way we can all understand. Keep it up. Brilliant 😎👍🏻 I’m from the uk 🇬🇧 and it’s left hand 😋
Rich you're video's are AWESOME! thank you so much for putting these videos up
sanahe2000 Thanks for that feedback, I love it! Hoping to keep premiering a video a week, stay tuned!
this is a fantastic tutorial; really simple and well explained technique, much appreciated!
k rae I love this feedback, thank you!
You've made great great how to series! Outstanding!
I'm 59 just set up my Giant Anthem Advanced SX 2017 using some of your tips and am now scaring my friends with my wheelie..... love it!! Next I'll try it on my Bianchi road bike.
YES!! That's awesome John. Must send some video of the Bianchi
Thanks for the video Mr Rich. It is very helpful. We are working on wheelies. With your tips we should improve. 👍
Best mtb how to channel, keep them coming man so good👌 thank you
bocap1980 Thanks bocap!! I appreciate that feedback.
The best tutorial i think, one thing i will add is a side to side balans, btw you helped me soo much with this step by step
Best wheelie video EVER! Thank you🍻
Now I regret y didn't I watch tis full video from last time . Really thank you so much it really work for me.💜💜💜
Best wheelie video I’ve seen. And I’ve seen quite a few. 👍🏻 Rich Drew is the man. Proper skills!
Thanks Cory! That means a ton man!
This is my segundo how to wheelie vid and both vids have really great content to tickle the "rad" within, I had no clue what I was doing wrong. Going rad tomorrow with higher hops to catch a good wheelie.
Your tutorials are great mate, super clear. Many thanks
TheEvilEyeMaster You are very welcome! That’s the goal, I’m excited it comes across that way.
Best wheelie vídeo so far! Thanks.
Feel it in my plums with the bluish hue
Your content has really elevated my riding RD! thanks, keep it up!
the best wheelie tutorial so far, much details which I think is precise...thanks Rich Drew!!!
You are very welcome 👊🏻
Best wheelie video i have seen so far!
Allan Maynard Thats great to hear Allan, thank you!
I had just subscribed a few days earlier and then rode by y'all that day and thought, "I think that was Rich Drew". Now I wish I would've wheelied by to get in the video :D great video!
Sawyer Ware That would’ve been awesome!! Be sure to say hi next time you see us. I love using that spot!
You are the best instructor that I’ve found! The young kids can certainly wheelie, but they don’t instruct nearly as well as you. I like the minor details that you give.
Thanks!
@Rich Drew another great Tutorial my man, Ive just last year started my own CZcams Channel with a bit of everything and I can easily manual, wheelie, bunnyhop, jump etc and i find it just as easy to coach others to learn as well HOWEVER I had absolutely no idea just how hard it is to apply all this by looking at a camera and trying to relay it from me to the lense.. Damn dude you make it look easy, props to you Rich..
Hey dude! So rad that you started a channel! It's a bit more difficult that people think, but it gets a bit easier with time. Keep it up!
I think i can wheeli after i see ur videos,thnx man 4 the tutorial👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
That's awesome!!!
The best break down of how to wheelie I've seen, and I've spent too much time watching CZcams videos, so I should know. :-) It's so cool to see you show the "non serious" side of your personality. Paraphrased..."I like to refer back to some of our deepest philosophers. The hips don't lie. You should listen to Shakira...she knows what she's talking about." LOL Outstanding. Also....the "I'm going to head you off here...yes you can wheelie anything." You KNEW that was going to be the first question, because it always is.
"keep your arm straight" that's exactly what i found out recently during my learning, and not lot videos emphasized this point clearly. At the same time, u also explained my issue of "falling one side". man, this is great video. b.t.w. i am currently at step 2, but i see the point u mentioned for step 3.
Very educational I have learned something new tonight and by the way thanks a lot for the encouraging words it really comes in handy in situations like mine since I’ve been trying myself real hard .
Keep it up Manuel!!
Best explanation I have seen, thank you.
That ending lol! Great video.
I have watched so many videos and this one was the best
Best wheelie (and other skills too) tutorial(s) on CZcams!! Many thanks, Rich!
Please tell Rob I'm anxiously awaiting his wisdom on clip shoe mods for transitioning flat pedal users. :-) Stay safe and healthy!!
Thanks JD!! I really appreciate that. I'm hoping we can bring some more exposure to the channel to grow it and maybe even bring Rob in on the regular!!
Haha nice tutorial...hilarious ending! Your the man!
Thanks Andy!!
OMG! That outfit you had on with that road bike Rich! lmao... Imma learn all this mess guys. For realz...
About 40 years ago I could do a wheelie for blocks while operating a Yo Yo. I rode a Schwinn Traveler road bike. I never used the rear brake. It got scary fast. I had a seated wheelie. My buddy who was equally as good as me did a standup wheelie. We would ride and compete for distance side by side. I remember going so fast and I lost the balance point a few times and had to run. I discovered many times that I could not run over 20 mph!
Another great tutorial,thanks Rich!
🚲👍🏻😊🛴
Thanks Davor!! I appreciate the support!
THANK YOU! this was totally different from the other vids out there - no one ever stressed not using the pedal power to stay up which is my biggest issue. Been at it for a month last year but about to try again with new tips suggested. Great video & great tips!
Eric Bort You are VERY welcome Eric!! I tried my best convey what has worked for me for many years and many miles of wheelies. I also tried to stress the areas I’ve seen people struggle with. Let me know how it works.
Mr. Nice Guy! Thx you so much for You’re Videos ! Greetings from germany
Very well explained and you give confidence to get it. Thanks
KAMEL K Thanks Kamel!! Go get em!
Best tutorial wheelie vid by far hell yeah
Thanks dude!
Great video!🤙🏻 I think you nailed all the info you could in a tutorial!
Thanks Peter! We really tried!
Great thanks for these tips! I really need to learn this so I can improve my technical skills.
You are very welcome!
I think you’re able to break down basics better than a lot of other “tutorials.” Ive been riding in NWA and got some good footage. It’d be great to get some feedback
Excellent vid!
Excellent tutorial!!!
Fantastic breakdown! Be safe.
Great job. With the Corona Virus going around I thought this would be a good time to learn to wheelie! Cheers!
Perfect Rich !!! Thanks and peace You !!! Greetings from Poland !!!
Thanks dude!! How's the riding in Poland? We might need to do a Ride Series How To WORLD TOUR soon!
Watched this last night on Patreon 😁. Rich is rockin the vids these days - ride series “how to”.... got watch people 😎👆
Thanks Pete!!! I loved all the feedback I got from the Patrons on this one. #membershiphasitsprivileges
I turned 60 last Frid Jan 7 2022. Fortunately when I am on a bike I am 17 all over again, and this is the year, I re-learn to wheelie, which was called a 'cat walk' back in the day.
Bikes are configured much differently now, as opposed to pulled back ape hangers and a banana seat, but I am thinking some of the old magic is buried somewhere and I will get it back.
Also plan on jumping, but don'y think I will make it to back flips this year. Never did much jumping as a kid we were always going to some pond or other adventure. Your content is excellent, I will subscribe a bit later...I want to make a little progress and feel worthy! - Cheers
Defo best wheelie vid out there
Thanks dude! Just the video I was looking for.
You are very welcome!!
Best tutorial. Thank you very much.
SagNeinZurDreifaltigkeit SagNeinZurDreifaltigkeit You are VERY welcome!! 👊🏻
Thanks for the great tutorial, sir! I’ve got work to do!
You are very welcome! Make sure to have fun while doing that "work!"
If you have watched numerous wheelie tip videos like me to get that front wheel up and don't succeed. I have had a light bulb moment watching Rich's video.
Set the playback speed @ 10:18 to 0.5 - watch this part of the video in slow motion as much as you can until you see the key to lifting the front wheel.
Worked a charm for me. Notice how Rich's arms extend with his torso after pre-loading the front end, only THEN does that front wheel lift. I think that is a big key move to the wheelie. Set's you up for a good body position moving forward
The timing of these videos is fortuitous....Something to do whilst under the quarantine...
Although I wish that wasn't the case, I'm glad to be able to supply some education and entertainment during these crazy times.
I actually said this was going to be my goal during this boring AF period!
Nice video.I do this trick for years and I can only agree with Rich. It took me 3 years to be able ride whelie whole block .5 years later I'm still improving my skills.
Heck yeah dude!! I don't think we ever stop improving...or trying to at least.
That was brilliant thanks for sharing I'm a 44 year old and been riding mtb 20+ years and still can't wheelie or manual and at the present time in isolation so gonna practice practice practice 🤘
Thanks Stewart! Let me know how the practice practice practice goes.
very good Rich !!! Great tutorial
Thank you Roby!
Thanks man! Great video! I’ll try adjusting seat and gear choice for sure🤘
Go get em Chris!
Nice! Just subscribed. Will use your tips today to find that balance point! Cheers from Japan!
Super informative great reference 💯
Thanks man, good bless you.
So cool to watch I learned a lot tnx big brother
You've got my attention @Rich Drew ;)! Cool stuff. Well deserved subscription. Cheers!
Błażej Thanks Blazej!! I appreciate the support.
This vid really help me learn how to wheelie far
I'm very impressed with your videos! How you deciphered my crossed up brain waves is amazing! I'm becoming the legend my brain always told me I was....Keep up the great work
Richard, I live inside your head and have had a team of scientists analyzing those brain waves ;)
Keep being that legend my man!!
@@richdrewtherideseries Mad scientists no doubt!
Nice explanation. Whether I can do it or not is another story! Thanks much.
David Change You’re very welcome David!!
great vid man! well explaned! thanks
Michel De Meyer You’re very welcome Michel!
I've got back into mountain biking and wish I never stopped but anyway been practicing wheelies again and getting better but not like I used to be but it will come back, and with your tips I think I will be there quick, I have a buddy that calls the balance point the flip zone...lol...thanks for the great vid, your wheelies are flawless.....👍
Thanks for the great tutorial, now i know whats the right and positioning😀😀
You are very welcome Paul! Let me know how it goes
Oh yes I am using pedal power. Still on a learning Prozess. Need to try your Prozess and looks like it doesn't require more energy. You got 1 new subscriber. Thanks for the help.
Very well explained , thanks mate 👍
You're very welcome!!
Right on! Thanks for doing this!
You know it Warren!! Thanks for watching!
Great tips RD
It's simple tips so easy thanks sir
Cool vid, thx. Find & hold the Balance point is the point 😜
This video was great!. I was a pedal pusher alright, go figure, small change got me to wheelie more consistently. Need a HOW TO BUNNY HOP. Your teaching just make sense
Thanks for the feedback Louis! So pumped you're getting that wheelie down consistently now. I've been trying to breakdown and write out the Bunny Hop how to and it's getting there. My man Kyle Warner does a pretty good one, you should check it out. @kyleandapril
I'm 50 and on day 5 of learning. I'm getting occasional moments when I get it right up (the front wheel 🤗) and feather the brake but I then suddenly loose momentum peddling. I've been videoing my efforts so I'll eventually start uploading my progress.
One thing that helped massively which was mentioned on another tutorial was to look up at where your going, not at the handlebars. Every time I do that it lifts to the point I need to hit the brake really easy. I guess it's helping to keep my back leaning back.
Great to hear about your progress! Can't wait to see the videos!
In Germany we use the right index finger for the rear brake as well.
YES!! I knew Germany was a rad country!
Rich Drew I think the front brake, right hand rear brake, left hand thing is just in the UK.
As far as I can tell, it's on which side of the road you should ride / drive, on that side is rear break.
10:15 Yes! I will just like everything I try or go to achieve I do get it even time after, but the important part is that I do get it,
I haven't learned because I don't have a helmet and covid-19 smash my pocket here in Latin America, no job for 2 years but I got my bike to feel free.
2:18 that sounds like lots of power in that trow back torso, but it makes sense, lift whit that and just pedal as required.
3:42 that is the same thing I think of, I saw that is the same normal sitting riding position, and that FIX is a GREAT KEY LOOKING AHEAD the bike lift easy, and my head still hurt but no bad symptoms, only stiff neck, pain on my spine bone even when I swallow.
