Fallout 4 hit stores in the fall of 2015, five years after the spinoff Fallout: New Vegas launched to widespread acclaim. In the years between the two releases, the video game landscape, specifically western role-playing titles, underwent a noticeable shift. The likes of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt raised the bar in many respects, especially with regards to content quality, storytelling, and presentation. While Fallout 4 couldn’t quite rise to the occasion, it still boasted the core tenets of the franchise’s modern adventures, offering a deep role-playing experience replete with choices, compelling characters, and a swath of customization options. To the dismay of fans, these pillars took a backseat in Bethesda Game Studios’ 2018 spinoff, Fallout 76.
An online-only installment in a traditionally single-player series, Fallout 76 failed to garner the excitement afforded to its predecessors. However, despite the skepticism in the months leading up to release, Fallout faithful gave the new endeavor a chance. Few redeeming qualities accompanied the game’s arrival, though.
In addition to a launch beset by game-affecting glitches and a dearth of engaging content, myriad other controversies cast dark clouds over what should’ve been a strong outing for Bethesda in late 2018. The controversy included poor quality collector items, overpriced rum, and a security breach, all of which contributed to a comedy of errors that many people will not soon forget.
Bethesda slowly corrected course, deploying free updates that optimized performance and introduced meaningful content in the form of dedicated story quests and NPCs. But regardless of the steps taken, Fallout 76’s path to redemption proved long and arduous, as the lingering effects of countless missteps marred this particular venture through the wasteland.
This is the tragedy of Fallout 76.

I find the lack of looks into the Helmet and Rum fiascos disturbing.
Already covered in detail by internet historian
Rum was over exaggerated, it's an overpriced products just like all the video game brand merchandise, the helmet was straight out clickbait fake news, the helmets wasn't made by Bethesda and were recalled almost half year before Internet start talking about it, not to mention they didn't even shipped them out.
@@GHOSTRIDER373737 Did other "Clickbait Fake News" products cause people to become sick or tasted like cough syrup despite their ridiculous hella-bougie price?
And? Because one guy talks about it automatically no one else can ever talk about it?
@@GHOSTRIDER373737 The rum actually had a very good reason to anger people. The price was fine if the design was an actual glass bottle and not just a plastic cover around a normal bottle.
But hey, you go ahead and defend mediocrity, hooray for you.
The fact that there were people who enjoyed paying for monthly subscription for a game they've already payed full price for.
These people are the reason games cost so much today.
to be fair, some games do it right. FF14, for instance, well deserves the monthly sub price with the quality of the expansions they put out - and they'd eventually stop making money otherwise, and have to shut the game down. 76, though... I don't get how people looked at that game and thought 'hell yeah this is worth buying a sub for'.
And the reason why people still support that shit. There is no "doing it right." It shouldn't be done at all. But gamers are dumb and will argue with people over spending money for free stuff. It's like indoctrination through slow incursion.
It goes beyond that. Game companies think they can release buggy, half finished games for $60 and expect their customers to happily wait for the devs to patch the game into something playable. Then they have the nerve to start adding micro transactions. And stupid people just put up with it. Ridiculous.
@J sorry misunderstood. Thought FFXIV was an actual entry in the main series
Well what you gonna do? Start a gamer jihad?
If playing the game doesn’t make you sick to your stomach.. the moldy helmet, cheap Nuka Rum and having your credit card info stolen will do it..
Should we also add the controversy around hackers stealling, trolling and harrassing people in game...
And if only it was that, but the incredible answer of Bethesda who, amongst all the rest... shot blindly and banned at vita æternam people that were normal players, in no way hackers... and they never corrected their mistakes, simply telling those unfortunates, in a administrative way, to "f**k of".
@@sirjazz1268 yes you should add all that besides harrassment because its a wasteland your gonna get attacked and harrassment.
And i never got my card information stolen now im scared 😐 because i still play and always get 1st

Exactly! The game is still an underdeveloped mess.
@@TehPwnographer I don’t miss a beat
I don't know whether it's a good or bad thing you're still playing it, but you have my respect for letting us know the truth.
Everyone has the own style of game they like. Just because you don’t like it don’t mean it’s shit. Every game has bugs especially the larger games go critique all games if it’s that much of an issue
Secondly they are listen to the community and shaping it into a better game. How many developers do that ey ?
Players took on the role of NPCs with even some being the END bosses. wow. That is some commitment.
That really sums up how they actually sold subscriptions for this bs. These people are THAT desperate they're literally pretending they're the missing bosses in the game.
I don't know this was a tragedy. I am 100% certain Todd Howard knew exactly the POS he was marketing. He forced his team to do the impossible with tech not suited for the project. He tarnished the name and ruined the reputations of people I feel genuinely cared about the IP. Tragedies happen to good people with good intentions, that was not the case here. This was an intentional, greedy cash grab.
It worked because there's a sucker born every minute. Even right now there are 9000 suckers playing this steaming pile of money-sucking crap.
It was a tragedy for the playerbase
Isn’t Todd just the guy they use for PR? Who knows who’s pulling his strings
Well, I got to play Fallout in co op. I got to play FALLOUT in co op before I died. Obviously it could have been better and more refined but damn was it a dream come true in many various ways for me. Never thought I'd see the day. I'd rather play 76 in co op over far cry or ass Creed any day.
Internet Historian's video on this went into far more detail. This video skipped out on real-life things, unlike the other videos on this channel.
Real-life things like the over-priced rum, that Canvas Bag, the Smurf accounts, the exploits, the bans...
This video is not up to your usual standard, GVMERS.
Yeah, people were pretty vocal about this in the comments of the original video, before it was deleted and re-uploaded to "fix a spelling error"... 🤔
I mean it's only a 15min video. There was and still is a lot more issues with the game then fits into a 15min video if you're going to go through every issue / detail. They also do mention the bag / rum in the intro they just don't cover it in depth.
@@randomhero6365 Then make longer as needed.
Else it's intentionally misinformation or missing information. And that is tantamount to lying.
@@CnCDune it's their channel, they can do whatever they want

"Despite the initial push back many players gravitated toward viewing subscription services positively" wait... What seriously? I am quite sure lots of people angry because you need to pay more on top of basic AAA price for QoL stuff, this whole video tone down entire fallout 76 problems, and pushing a narrative that bethesda is good guy, is this episode sponsored by bethesda?
As dumb as it might sound, there is apparently a small playerbase that still play Fallout 76 and happily buy into whatever shit Bethesda churns out.
I don't know why they do it, and I suspect they are the same type of people who praise No Man's Sky now after additional years of updates, but yeah.
My thought exactly.
I recommend watching "the internet historian" take on the subject. This video gloss over a HELL LOT of problems, from players getting banned cause they played the game too much (stashing too many items) to leaked personnal informations on their subscription website (at one point, anyone had access to all others user's informations throught a broken search bar). This hell of a game never stopped delivering and this video doesn't tackle 5% of it.
@@DatCameraMON Neither did i play FO76 or No Mans Sky but you have to give No Mans Sky the Fact that they really got their shit together and fixed the Game. They fucked a lot up up till Release but from then on, they were working on it. Also they never charged a single cent up to this day, its only free content Patches. Cant compare it to FO76. If Witcher 3 can be considered a good RPG, then so do Fallout 4.

We bang OK?
Fuck you.
There are more than 4 options of course, but meaningful one are pretty much 4 of these.
@@GHOSTRIDER373737 My point is that Fallout 4 has a serious lack of choices in a franchise known for decision-making;
Witcher 3 has pre-established characters with definitive arcs, and choices are not the main dish like Fallout, but a welcomed bonus
Fallout 4 seriously lacks what made the previous games good, and thus, is an unreplayable game
I say its a good game on its own, but a shit Fallout game
@@ivancerecer5758 People keep overlooked one thing though, you can actually see the impacts of your choices on the world after the game's ending, in New Vegas you just get a slideshow.

Bethesda: all in on online multiplayer
Players: we don’t want that
Bethesda: we don’t care, did you visit the store yet?
Players: it seems like this game exists entirely to get me into that store, despite paying $60 for this.
Also dev teams: Ok, our online game absolutely sucked, let's devote all of ours resources to that failure of a game, abandon our fanbase, and delay our singleplayer games 30+ years!
@@utisti4976 Man you're right, they should've TOTALLY abandoned a game people paid for. That's a far better option than actually sticking with it, improving it, adding new content and quests for the people who still enjoy it.

Shut up
They lost my respect with this game.
Creating issues and selling solutions for a game that is already paid for.
First impressions of a game is very important.
I havent played wasteland and never plan to do so.
Paid** for
Why did they have it to begin with, they didn't change the core character movement and interaction nor physics engine since fkin' morrowind (heck, still can't crouch even in 76, and by that i mean it doesn't change your physical height, can't go into crawlspaces), they sold the same product over and over, they where pretty much the FIRST to put fourth DLC (horse armor), their games where always a shitty, buggy mess that was only played for the RPG (which they kept cutting down on) and modding (which isn't even THEIRS but the community's achievement...). They where always shitty, greedy and innovation lacking scumbags that kill titles and what they're all about, who can't do shit, can't fix their old bugs, and can't (or won't) update their engine and instead pile layers upon layers of code, eating away at their audience's pc performance without adding much, if anything. I still can't fathom how 76 even CAME TO BE aside idiotic blind fans, where all the warning signs its coming where there for over a decade, especially in Fallout 4 which showed very well to anyone even REMOTELY familiar with computers and computer games that the engine's already falling apart at the seems (barely able to run 60 fps on min settings even on better computers at the time, ESPECIALLY inside buildings, all while looking, playing, feeling, and by all accounts BEING a fucking mess of a game and a program in general).
Fun Fact: The Battle Royale Mode will get closed in September.
Generally speaking, is BR now officially considered a fad or is it just bethesdas incompetence at work again?
@@qwert291 If you asked for the general popularity of BR, then its still extremely popular. CoD took advantage of the market situation and I expect Battlefield to join that soon. Other BRs are also coming out with good numbers in Beta like Narakara:Bladepoint. PUBG and Fortnite still pump massive numbers.
A Battle Royale mode is highly competitive and is expected to work. Cant imagine Bethesda could meet these expectations.
In general are Fallout players different gamers and from official site there is the statement, that the players prefer other genres, which is realistic in my opinion.
However both aspects will probably have influenced this situation.
I unfortunately cant give you a deep insight because I never played Fallout 76 and dont plan to play it soon.
Sources that I found couldnt give me a real oversight.
personally I'm glad it is. Fallout isn't a game that sits very well as a br and now they can put more resources towards the the primary parts of the game
Fresh comment section huh? I'm still saying what I said first time, can't sweep it under the rug.

It’s been pretty bad for the last 5 years.
Except Fallout 76 is roaring succes for Bethesda.
The game is designed to live off a couple of thousand players, who's spending all of their cash on it.
3:45 yeah you know how there were certain spots in skyrim and fallout 4 where the game's fps would just tank like crazy, but then they got fixed in skyrim special edition? well they didn't bother to fix them in fallout 76, that's how dedicated they are. atomic shop works fine tho...

honestly thats not the mistake that bothered me. He said the idea for a multiplayer fallout was first considered during production of Fallout 4. When in reality "Fallout Online" was a game already being worked on when Bethesda bought the property. In fact it's the whole reason bethesda waited until now. Black Isle still owned rights to online/multiplayer fallout and was actually written into the terms of sale that they be allowed to continue work. But they had money troubles and so their version died. Once they were contractually allowed, Bethesda got to work.

Billy_Cross 76 a “successful” online game? I think you and I define success very differently
Are you seriously implying that Microsoft spent white how many millions purchasing the entire series of companies made up by Zenimax all of their first party developers and all the game titles all because fallout 76 had a terrible launch and then you know quite frankly came back to become a money making IP for Bethesda because you know it does make money right it’s a successful online service that’s making the money it’s doing exactly what they wanted to do was create a continuing revenue stream. Because if that’s what you think I mean seriously I feel sorry for your parents
@@brysonkuervers2570 yes I’m sure we do have a very different definition. Of course the correct definition is a property that makes more money than it costs such as FO76. Your parents must also be very proud of your reasoning
Still sticking to my comment before. This was so nice to Bethesda considering the bad PR that plagued it. As I saw some one mentioned on the first upload, "you half expected an add for Fall Out to appear in this video!"
There are literally thousands of other videos that speak to all the points you wanted. Yawn.
@@TehPwnographer If they are going to do a review into the problems that plagued a game development and release, like they do on all their videos, then report on all problems. To not go over everything is just lazy reporting. If "other videos" reported on Fall Out, why bother making one to begin with?
It wasn't just the title the changed, that wouldn't involve re-uploading the video entirely anyway.
Plus the upload is about 2-3 minutes shorter than I thought it originally was.
If someone knows what exactly got removed that let a boii know
I remember them mentioning how "robust" and "detailed" of an RPG Fallout 4 was in the original video way more than they did in this one, and loads of people in the comments were upset about that, not to mention the first video having way more dislikes than this. Seems like they took out a good deal of their praise for Fallout 4.
@@tuhuar I watched the original video, the only time he pointed out Fallout 4's acclaim is in 0:44, which is still there.
imagine if all the content, world locations, creatures, were put instead in FO5 with proper solid dialogue system and good story
im sorry Fallout 4 had deep what now?? not sure what you been smoking over there
Easiest way of redemption would have been to simply remove all online aspects and republish the game as a singleplayer modable classic experience. (even if you don't like or want mods, in a time of MTX it is important to keep the ability to cheat / mod to make paywalls impossible)
Just played 76 for the first time, never wanted to play fallout 4 so much after playing.
I tried this out with a friend a couple of months ago (March 2021) and wow... what a soulless experience. We thought it would get better but it never did. It’s not Fallout. Never was.
Biggest nitpick: the map is not in the Pip Boy and deviated from the cold but hearty tech UI into this childish over-the top cartoon map where everything is already discovered for you.
Fallout 4 "deep role playing" .. GWMERS said it, not me ...
Still better than Witcher 3.
@@yeahokay3806 it beats Witcher 3 at DICE and BAFTA game of the year awards, two biggest peer based game awards voted by professional developers and not funded by game journalists..
@@GHOSTRIDER373737 They only play a game for 30 minutes and move on, hardly enough time to actually experience a game. Game awards are a total joke.
Star field and ES6 gonna suffer the same fate. The price you have to pay for greed
"The great things about having a fully dynamic game engine is all of this just works"- Todd Howard
Now you have new one with Stardust ... "20 years in production" ...first few sec. into the trailer if i remember right.
Have you ever heard of the tragedy of darth plagueis the wise
The truth is that Bethesda Game Studios should never have gotten the Fallout license. Just pick up Wasteland 2 and Wasteland 3
Amen and before this comment inevitably get's the "BUt nEw VEgaS iS BeTHeSdA", New Vegas was basically made by the same team as FO1 and 2, not Bethesda
@@Grimnir_x Wrong, the team from Fallout 1 and 2 are really small, their contribution to New Vegad are over exaggerated, the biggest contribution of New Vegas is the new Obsidian team, most notably John Gonzalez, who wrote most of the companions and Honest Heart, personally the best writer to me on the team, and he wasn't from Black Isle, Chris Avellone wae great too, but remember he also get flanked for Fallout 2's writing for being too goofy.

I want co-op in Skyrim.
*Bethesda: Here's World of Warcraft wearing Elder Scrolls' clothes.*
No, I want co-op in Skyrim.
*Bethesda: Here's a shallow Fallout with no NPCs and you have to pay real money for that NCR Ranger armor you already wore in New Vegas like 10 years ago.*
WHAT?!
Reconfiguring the engine instead of licensing a premade one is insane.
Althought I love the GVMERS videos, there was no need for anyone to ever make a F76 video after the Internet Historians version.
@Unbridled Instinct This video is missing too much of the FO76 fiasco and how Bethesda dealt with it, though.
I wouldn't call this "solid".
And it almost feels like this video was made in defense of Bethesda because of the lack of that info.
You should have named the video “Fallout 76: a comedy of errors”
A golden opportunity missed IMO
0:12 what's that song called? I can't find it :(
Soothing voice and great music, what is that music from?
Boy, I remember the original video's dislike ratio being quite a bit higher than this one 😅
*bethesda hasnt been good since morrowind. **0:49** "deep roleplaying options and choices" uh what game were you playing fallout 4 was a linear fps with very light rpg elements*
With every new release they watered down the RPG elements and got even lazier with bug fixing and writing. Fallout 4 is way more of a shooter than it is an rpg and in turn was a mediocre game. Since there is no one that makes games in their style they see no competition hence lower quality games with each release. I hope 76 slapped them hard and starfield turns out to be fantastic
Naaah, Oblivion was a cozy masterpiece. I will love it forever
Blizzard when they first announced Diablo Immortal and said that it's only for phones and mobile: Do you guys not have phones?
Bethesda when they announced Fallout 76 and said there won't be any human npcs and also the game will be fully online only: Do you guys not have friends or an internet connection?
Whats the song title at the credit of the videos..
The game is really not so bad nowadays, I'ts actually pretty enjoyable even solo.
@The Neturei Karta Nah, but I guess its pretty easy to follow the other sheep right?
How dare you enjoy something I don't approve of!
@The Neturei Karta he enjoys a game you dont? how dare he
Literally all bethesda needed to do was re-release fallout 4 with a multiplayer component not EVERYTHING has to be an MMO or 60 player enviroment i literally just want to be able to play with 1-3 of my friends as my companions in a compelling single player story i dont know why that is so hard for developers to understand , you dont need to sacrafice single player for multiplayer , literally just give the game a barebones multiplayer drop in drop out co op thats it , you dont need to explain anything people are smart enough to rationalize that your friends are basically a replacement for your companions
A single player fallout game that you can also play 2 player together with a friend Would be good. Like they do with gears or that. That's the only online I want in a fallout game.
It's just a shame that an awesome series, even with the faults of 4, is now going to be put on hold with a failed entry like 76 and a new entry, at least from BGS, won't be seen until at least a decade from now. Devastating to fans like me.
I would have been alright with it if they firstly made a proper game, and then became money hungry goblins
Tragedy? This was a mercy killing, this game got what it deserved
Not really, not even close, if it'd get what it deserved it'd go out of business... Actually if it would FULLY get what it deserved Bethesda would be near bankruptcy after releasing 4
Still leaves me wondering how the developers were kept motivated. If I was working on this project I'd see the train wreck launch coming and bail ahead of the drama. If for whatever reason I remained on to continue development, the string of bad decisions following the launch would have drained me for sure.
I just play borderlands series with 4 player coop. That was done right.
Borderlands is a fucking AMAZING TIME
I don't mind rewatchign this excellent video on Fallout 76. :)
I tried it a month or so ago, it was fine. But Bethesda bugs and quirks are still there and I can not accept them anymore
same engine for 15 years.
The story of Todd Howard's rise and fall is as tragic as the rise and fall of Charles Foster Kane of Citizen Kane.
Citizen Kane is a shit movie. More shit than FO76.
Haven't played since first month's launch. Is it worth playing again?
Worth uninstall, bethesda don't consider worth a refund. Your choice.
"Ultimate Online"
You mean "Ultima Online"?
yep
because we don't have enough videos on fallout 76 yet
I swear if someone buys the game they will have the feeling like the played the entire game already
seeing Todd say "fallout fans will never like a multiplayer fallout" is embarrassing. I am the most die hard fallout fan ever, I would LOVE multiplayer fallout, the catch is that the game has to actually be good for me to enjoy it.
saying what he said is like me saying "let me make you some cake even though you like cookies" and then literally burning the cake black in the oven. When you say you don't like my cake, I proclaim "ah, cookie lovers will never enjoy cake."
That's what you get for giving free passes to devs who never even cared to fix the bugs in their games before launching them.
Bethesda's fans got what they freaking deserve. 🔫🤡
So you missed a bunch of key points here like the fact they were charging full price for the game and promised to never charge money for in game items. Now they have a shop and a monthly fee. You also didn't really mention the in game bomb that would crash the servers, moldy helmets, The poorly made bags, The fact the online accounts weren't set to private and anyone could see your credit card and the expensive rum in a plastic bottle. I've played every Bethesda game since Marrowind, This game was a broken cash grab and I will never trust Bethesda ever again IDK if Microsoft owns them now.
If you played every game since Morrowind then what changed? every fucking game past Morrowind was riddled with bugs and shit.
Also as Pete Hines already stated in an interview, they really didn't plan for any in-game items to be added but sadly things change and that's just how it goes.
@@acidous1276 What's changed is the bugs were usually something small but with online play it becomes a huge problem, also people would patch the bugs and now they can't.
That's not how it goes. They made a promise to everyone who bought the game and gave them money, They shouldn't be able to lie about it. If you bought a car with a 50k warranty, it broke down in 2 weeks. They tell you Things change would you respond with.. That's just how it goes
@@ebenezerspludge8369 1st of all a car doesn’t have warranty, it has insurance and if an insurance company refuse to pay then it’s illegal and you have a right to take them to court.
Fallout 76 is a game, a fucking game. The in-game items they added to the Atom Shop are so worthless that they aren’t even constituted as pay to win, people who say otherwise clearly haven’t played the game and have no right to judge.
Why would you buy a repair kit when there are perks in the game that can repair your items twice as much than a repair kit can, why would you buy a scrap box when you can scrap items at ANY type of workbench.
Also the collectrons in the store? They’re are laughably bad because they don’t collect junk as much as people think they do it. It can take hours for a collectron to collect HALF of what the player can collect in a few minutes.
The promise they made never mattered, because it hasn’t really been broken. The game hasn’t become pay to win.
@@acidous1276 Cars do have a warranty, Usually from the factory. Insurance is if you get into a accident. Warranty is if something breaks on the car without involving an accident.
The game that is playable is not the game that was promised, It's trash. The point I'm trying to make is if you promise something and deliver something else in any other industry it's fraud and you will be sued. Unfortunately there's not many laws for live service games as they are new and law makers are older so they don't understand what a ripoff these games are. I hope the next few Bethesda games bomb and MS just dismantles the studio and has other companies work on their games. I'd like to see Turn 10 make an ESO game.
@@acidous1276 modders could usually fix those things, but not when it is a online multiplayer, then it has to be Bethesda and they never fix anything, and that was the reason that when I found out it was multiplayer I lost all interest in that game, I have not bought it and I never will.
Rather than this I think couch co-op on New Vegas could work. That way I could focus on being a gunman and a doctor, while my friend could focus on being a computer whiz and a tank with power armor, etc. and our combined build could allow us to see more content that a lone player couldn't in one playthrough. (but I'm not a huge Fallout fan so take my opinion with a grain of alt, I suppose).
The refunds were so bad that they had closed out refunds until they were sued.
People got disappointed by the launch state of the game, and later still buy the premium membership
Like a certain guy always likes to say *_"It just works"_* xD
*"Did you ever hear the **-tradegy-** tragedy of Fallout 76?"*
*"No"*
*_"I thought not. It's not a story Bethesda would tell you"_*
Bethesda doesn't deserve the Fallout ip. Theyve been butchering it since FO3. In honestly think without New Vegas nobody would have even cared about FO4, much less this mess
Fallout 76 has grown since launch... i decided to give it a go. I'm having fun
I don't think I'm ready to watch this yet even with the reupload.
How the F was Fallout 4 a deep roleplaying experience? It was the most dumbed down version it could be.
You guys ended it like the game is fixed and Bethesda learned their lesson but the game is still broken and they went on to release ES Blades which is just a worse version of this game in the ES series on Phones.
How is your gameplay so smooth? I’m getting 30FPS on PS4
