    After announcing its acquisition of the licensing rights for 20th Century Fox’s Aliens franchise, Sega teased two projects based on the property-a role-playing game and a first-person shooter. Within a few short years, Sega unceremoniously cancelled the RPG, which had been helmed by Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment. Many would later contend the FPS from Borderlands studio Gearbox Software should’ve suffered a similar fate. Instead, it arguably endured far worse, and not at all for the better.
    Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines was intended as a showcase of what’s possible when a licensed brand and a skilled group of developers meet in perfect harmony. Fox and Sega additionally envisioned Colonial Marines as a stepping stone to narrow the divide between gaming and film. The shooter’s canonical narrative exemplified this intention tenfold. Gearbox’s efforts failed spectacularly, though, culminating in a mess of broken promises that long tarnished its reputation.
    According to a host of accusations leveled against Gearbox, mishandled resources, professional dishonesty, and a lack of passion beset the game’s lengthy and tumultuous development cycle. While studio representatives have denied these claims, the word of former staff members paints an entirely different picture, one that suggests Colonial Marines was never in a position to fulfill its promise of faithfully expanding upon the beloved sci-fi universe.
    This is the tragedy of Aliens: Colonial Marines.

      I'm not an especially big fan of Looting-FPS games so I never was really into Borderlands. But Randy Pitchford is surrounded by so much negativity, hell, this man is such a PR-Desaster that he is the second reason I will never get into Borderlands and not into the work of Gearbox in general. I know it's extreme but I always have his funny face before my eyes and the scandalous stories revolving around him. Every other CEO would be long gone from his position but he somehow managed to rescue himself after each of these scandalous stories, one worse than the other.

    I worked in QA on this game, and I am credited in it. Its true looked so much better when it was first brought to QA but it didn't run well at all on consoles so the graphics were lowered substantially to meet FPS requirements. (As mentioned in this video) Gearbox wouldn't touch the code, especially for the AI, and told us so. We reported on all the bugs in the game and a lot didn't get fixed before release. Timegate really are the ones that made the majority of the game with Gearbox focusing on Borderlands 2, some minor changes, and the DLC. Sega wanted this title out as fast as possible because it had been stuck in development Hell for years at that point, and Gearbox were the ones on the hook for it, and it was pushed out for release. A lot of really great people were involved in this title, and it really just didn't come together well for a variety of reasons.

    As a serious alien franchise geek, it was a roller-coaster of emotion.
    I was very active on the gearbox forums at the time and absolutely hyped by the detail of the set design, props, weapons, and the lore behind those props and weapons. But there where obvious gaping issues with the characters and some of the plot details.
    For instance the fact it took a petition started by Moosh and signed by most of the marines in the movie to get gearbox to add female marines to the multiplayer. That's not a "diversity" thing, just being accurate to the source material.
    Then the game came out. The loresuits were everywhere. The media was ripping the game apart. And the slow drip of leaked information started coming out. I spoke to a lot of devs in that time, particularly Timegate, and it was weird how some absolutely adored the franchise (like the Timegate employee I spoke to who claimed to be behind the pixel art "thanks for playing" easter egg in the dlc) and a lot seemed to absolutely loath it. A couple of the gearbox staff kept talking about how great borderlands was (which was always going to fall flat for me as I've disliked the series since the first one).
    The DLC further demonstrated that there was some serious love and some absolute apathy. The entire singleplayer dlc is a marked improvement on the main game (still got lots of issues). And Bug Hunt is the best multiplayer alien experience out there... On some maps. It's terrible on others.
    And then Gearbox lost their last ounce of sympathy from me when they deleated the A:CM forum entirely.

      Well, for me it was a lot easier to believe this than the crap in Alien 3. The Queen could NOT have layed an egg on the Sulaco, but to have Ripley conveniently being the sole survivor of the crash, & conveniently being implanted with a queen embryo was far too contrived.
      I looked at the situation in ACM similar to The Thing game. The Outpost 31 base shouldn't have been standing like it was, but it made for a great atmospheric experience.

    • @JediPloys
      @JediPloys Před 3 lety

      @@filmbuff2777 I agree that Alien 3's was way too contrived and convenient, but the difference between The Thing game and ACM was that: While you visited Outpost 31, it was still burned to the ground. You spend a majority of the game at other arctic facilities. ACM has you spend a huge chunk of the game at Hadley's Hope, a place that was annihilated by a nuclear explosion that Bishop described: "In 19 minutes this area's going to be a cloud of vapor the size of Nebraska." Considering he's an android, I don't have much reason to think that was an exaggeration.
      You could find a cheeky way to explain that _some_ parts are still somewhat in tact, but ACM acts like this super nuclear explosion did literally nothing to Hadley's Hope. It looks exactly the same as it did when the Sulaco marines showed up for the first time in Aliens. It'd be like in The Thing game if you went to Outpost 31 for a good 2/3rds of the game and everyone mentioned that it was burned to the ground, but it looked exactly how it did before anything happened in the movie, except for a few references, like the smashed radio room and the revolver.

    Man, I remember hearing about that typo. Instead of 'attach to tether', it was 'attach to TEATHER'. Supposedly it didn't help improve the game much, that while it did help the Xeno's the navigate the levels better, it was still a shit game overall.

    • @DCG909
      @DCG909 Před 3 lety +7

      I remember people posting that after that fix, they had a cat and mouse encounter with a xeno that lasted for 5 minutes or so with the thing constantly trying to flank him.

    • @Rogue_Nine416
      @Rogue_Nine416 Před 2 lety

      there was a recent patch in the last few months that tweaked the xenomorph AI (whether it was actually fixing the typo for the game without you having to manually do it or real changes, idk) and the game plays a lot differently now in july 2021 than it did in july of 2020
      unfortunately, the human ai is still pretty stupid but i've had some pretty neat encounters with xenomorphs
      they're smart enough to corner you when you're alone without ai or other players and i've had them back off when i'm shooting and overwhelm me when i'm reloading or out of ammo
      it DOES seem to be a case by case basis for their intelligence though because i haven't had that happen every time i've played but their pathfinding *is* much better than it used to be and on some levels, it absolutely changes everything

    I was so looking forward to Aliens when it was first announced. The magazine articles made it look amazing. The gameplay trailers made it look amazing. I loved Aliens and wanted to play in that universe. I pre-ordered the special edition with the figurine. When it came out I was so hyped...I played through the first level and...I knew I had been lied to. The game was shit. The Xenomorphs were stupid. It was a train wreck. I seriously felt like I had been robbed. I have not played the game since, and I have never pre-ordered another game since. I don't care what kind of cool crap they are offering, or what kind of in game perks they want to try and peddle...After Aliens I was done, forever, with pre-ordering.
    It has also put me off on any Gearbox titles as well, along with them changing Borderlands from realistic to cel-shaded. I'm sorry, but IMO it looked a lot better as a more realistic title, not the cartoony style then went with. Still a fun game. But after Aliens I was done giving Pitchford my money.
