- Part 7: Painting the Version 1 helmet with Tamaya TS-38 gunmetal.
After finishing the Death Trooper build I decided that I wanted to build a Vader for my friend. I've heard many people say that it's a really expensive build. So, let's just see. I'm going to make everything that I can on this Rogue One Vader build and bring you along with me. Hope you enjoy it!

Thanks so much!
Looks awesome
Thanks buddy! I saw that you are working on a blaster! It's looking good bro!
Amazing work my friend.
Thanks brother! 👍
Lookin great!! The gunmetal always feels a bit much till you drop the dome on and cast some shadows..
Thanks Dan! It's crazy how much it changes the look.
I found that when you clearcoat the face plate, the gunmetal goes a shade darker. I found that it was less of a contrast against the black. keep up the good work trooper. cheers
Thanks Chef! I might have to give it a light coat then. Cheers my friend 👌👍
@@naterritchey19 You are very welcome my friend and if the paint finish is too shiny you can always dial it down with a Mat clearcoat. Cheers
🤠👍👍👍👍👍
It's amazing how much the two tone color changes the look of the helmet. The gun metal does look a bit light. but that could be also due to the lighting that you have in your garage.
Myself, I bought a can of Dupli color - Gunmetal/ bronze met. it is a bit darker in color and very closely matches my EFX Helmet. Which I recently found and bought an unopened AHN Vader helmet from Ebay. I also recently received the eye lenses and tusks that I have purchased from Fenixprops. And am very pleased.
IU tried printing the tusks but found that I had to print a dozen of them the prevent them from melting. I also had to remodel the tusks to show the grip at the base of it to. But in the end these were pieces I ended up buying. However, very awesome job you did. It is coming together well.
Thank you very much! I'm not sure about the TS-38 gunmetal. It's definitely very different outside in natural light. The little pieces are a pain. My plan is to resin cast some of these small pieces like the tusks after I print them. Hopefully lol. Still not sure about lenses. Might make those too.

the 2 tone colour was for the film only to create contrast since the camera only captured black, in real life no matter what the 2 tone looks like crap. i too did it also to my rubies and its quite horrid. as a cosplayer only ROTS is the best all black helmet
Correct. It doesn't look as good as all black. I only did it this way to match a clubs CRL for a friend of mine. Unfortunately, I don't have my own Vader suit or helmet. 🥲
As a fellow prop maker who paints a ton of Vader helmets I get the feeling of how long and tedious it is to mask off a Vader face plate. Was by far my least favourite part of the build. If you ever do another I highly recommend using fine line tape for all the curves and intricate details that need to be masked. Cut my masking time in half. Love the videos 🤙🏼
Thanks bud! Yes, I absolutely hate masking and the Vader helmet is the worst. I'm just going to have to order some fine line tape from Amazon or something. I tried to find some before doing this helmet but didn't have any luck.
@@naterritchey19 that’s where I got mine, it’s made by 3m. May be under the automotive paint masking tape search. Made all my paint ups a breeze and it doesn’t lift paint either which is nice.
Awesome, I'm gonna snag some up then. Thanks for the tip buddy 👍
Awesome!!! Could you make me one?
When you had it on your hand, I thought you might start talking to it like a ventriloquist.
Haha, I do that all the time. 😂
hi mate... nice work :) i want print DV helmet from EP3 :D
Thanks! Check out 3d print Armory and see if they have those files. 👍
Hi, great job! I have only one question. That gunmetal is smooth glossy or metallic pearlescent with micro sparkles like glitter?
Thanks. It's Tamiya TS-38
@@naterritchey19 Thanks, I know that but... in my country, Argentina, Tamiya does not exist. So, I need to know if TS-38 is flat or glittery.
It has a little sparkle to it. Hope that helps
@@naterritchey19 That's really help. On Argentina we don't have TAMIYA of any kind so... we have to improvise.
Really 3d work?
Yeah, this is 3d printed.👍
