- If you want a way to change your voice in realtime for your cosplay outfits, try this setup. Using a throat mic and a smartphone with the Robovox app and an external speaker and headphone amplifier.

This has been SUPER helpful! Thank you for sharing. I feel like I’m very close to being where I need to be on this. I do have one issue, but think I have a fix. I have tried this setup through the FireWire adapter, but haven’t gotten the mic to work yet, but I believe the solution is to add a TRS to TRRS adapter between the FireWire adapter and the splitter. Looking at the previous comments, this may be the solution for many of other people’s issues with later iPhones. Hoping to find one today and will post an update here!

Yeah! Very important for long gaming times. I sit most of the day at work and having a Herman Miller Mirra chair with extra big wheels for my height (6’5”) is extremely important!
If I'm making my own Vader suit, would you think it may be possible to put a circular speaker in the chest box of Vader's suit?
I have often thought about that. My problem has been is I have an electronics board providing the lights in there. But probably will work. Just remember that it is the thing, besides the helmet, that is very recognizable and would need to have very small holes for the sound out. Why do you think?
But I have been playing with arduino nano boards that are a lot smaller and I might attempt it.
Maybe create a 3d printed cage that I can spread a black cloth mesh over the frame to serve as the main box. Hmm that might turnout good!
I purchased the same throat mike setup you show, but I want to connect it to my Voicebooster MR 1506 but using the cable splitter you show, I still don't hear anything from the throat mike. You stated you wired a setup, how did you do this or do you know how I can make the throat mike work with the voice booster?
Are you connecting the phone and an headphone amp and then the voice booster speaker like I show in the wiring diagram?
@@RickMelges No Rick, I'm just trying to connect the throat mike directly to the Ackers Voice booster MR 1506 amp which has a speaker and a built in amp by using the top pin from the throat mike. Is the throat mike compatible with a voice amp only, because I've seen some youtube links about throat mikes just for that and maybe this one isn't?
So I have the splitter, the mic, a speaker, and the app, the only thing I'm missing is the headphone amplifier. Now, the splitter doesn't work in the sense that it will always only play through the headphones and default to the iPhone microphone. Is the Amplifier really necessary since it doesn't appear to connect to the splitter directly, and can you think of any way to force this? I'm going to a costume party on Saturday and I'd really like to get this working before then.
It may work. But it may not be louder than your voice. That’s what I used the head phone amplifier for. It was only as loud as the speaker. And my voice was at the same level cranked all the way up. Yours may be different and/ or better.

I know this is an old video but I was wondering if this would perhaps work with a Bluetooth speaker ? So you connect the mic to the phone and then the phone to the Bluetooth speaker
I’m not sure. The reason I come out of the phone wired is because the voice needs to be amplified. The output goes into a preamp. Head phone amp before the speaker. I think it is possible. But you would need a program to separate the wired mic input from the Bluetooth output. I’m sure there are people to do make those. I just don’t know if it would be loud enough.
When I use the app it takes a good 6-10 second to process and change the voice and doesn't work real-time like in your video. Could it just be the phone I'm using? Or have they updated the app since you made this video to where it doesn't work real time anymore? Any ideas?

Hey! I'm having the same issue another guy on here was having, I bought this whole setup and tried it on my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ as well as a Xiaomi Redmi S3 which just has the standard 3.5mm instead of needing an adapter. I've found that neither of them will connect to the throat mic? It just goes straight to the internal microphone and ignores the throat mic. And I think at one point it might've been working on calls but not on RoboVox? It seems like the creator of that app stopped supporting it like 6 years ago. Have you found any solutions?
Can you use a headphone with mic on those devices? Have you tried to use just a standard headphone with mic? The way I test to see if it is actually picking up the mic on the the headset and not the internal mic is by tapping the mic with my fingernails. Then I replay recording in parrot mode on robovox. Or you really just need to make a regular recording.

Thanks for making and keeping this video up. It's great. I've been working on a costume for my son and this would be perfect for it, however, I've run into. a problem. I can't seem to get the internal mic for the iphone (either the iPhoneX or iPhone 5S to turn off when I plug in the throat mic. This causes a lot of feedback as it pics up what's being played through the speaker. Any thoughts on how I might resolve this?
Let me do some testing on the new iOS. It might have changed something. I’m going to use it in my Mandalorian costume just to give my voice the radio sound. I’lol let you know.
I tested this setup with my iPhone 13 Pro with the latest update and it works great! Are you using RoboVox? It seems to handle headphone input/output much better than other apps I have tried.
Not using Robovox. It seems to no longer be available in the iPhone App Store :( I was testing out various other apps and kept running into the same issue

Hi, thanks for this. I purchased everything but I am getting a reverb or echo from the speaker., sounds very musical lol. Do you know what might be causing this? Could it be my splitter? It doesn't specify headphone/audio on the connectors just a standard audio splitter and also there are only 2 rings on the jack. Please help
Yeah the splitter needs to connect via 3 rings or 4 points of contact. Tip, ring, ring, sleeve. The sleeve is ground.
Most audio splitters allow you to double the output. But you need a splitter that will separate the headphone and mics. Mic is usually pink and sound output is green.
What App do you use for you smart phone
I use RoboVox using the pitch feature only which is on the free version.
Hey there! I bought the new throat mic setup that you put in the description and I'm having a pretty strange issue, the mic doesn't seem to pick up my voice, and when I am speaking at full volume, the output the mic gives is insanely quiet. What can I do to fix this?
You are using an iPhone? And the the Retivis adjustable throat mic? Remember you have to keep that talk button pressed down at all times. That’s why I used the zip ties on it.
@@RickMelges No I've got samsung, I have an adapter for it like you do though. But even plugging the throat mic into something like my pc makes it quiet. I did some audio tests on my pc and it picked up my voice, it was just incredibly quiet.
When you use the RoboVox input are you getting the audio to the app? If not, there is a problem in wiring. You might have to run it down. I’m not sure of the set up you are using.
@@RickMelges That's the thing, it's so quiet that I can't even tell if the app is picking it up, I'm gonna run a few more tests and maybe do some research on it.

I dont see anybody ask this question so I figure I'll give it a shot. How are you making have zero delay, ill speak but it takes like half a seccond to hear the results through a speaker

It wasn't the exact setup I've been experimenting with a few things im not sure if its the app I was using causing the delay or maybe the different audio Jack's causing the delay. And half a seccond was a bit of an exaggeration but I was curious how you got it to be instantaneous your first try
Well it took lots of experimentation. But my biggest hurdle was stopping the phone internal microphones from picking up my voice. I had lots of audio delays until the smartphone wiring was figured out in conjunction with the throat mic. That solved all the delay.
@@RickMelges Update: I've got your exact setup on a Galaxy S10+ and the voice still has a slight delay where as yours has none, any advice?

Isn’t the new mic compatible with a zoom multistomp?
It probably is, great idea. You will use the multi stomp to adjust the pitch and digital distortion. It will be real-time too like the phone since it is a audio processor and battery powered. For $129 at sweet water it is a much more straight forward solution. It would be fun to test. Still need a amplifier of some sort. Let me know how it goes!

@@REALTGYT it should still work if you have 3.5mm jack to your samsung. Remember you will need a tip,ring, ring, sleeve connector to be able to separate headphone from microphone.

What do you mean?
I cannot figure out how to get the iPhone 11 Pro internal microphones to turn off and just use the throat microphone. I have the Apple lightning to TRRS adapter and the TRRS splitter. I've checked multiple times to verify my connects match the diagram. Nothing seems to get picked up from the throat mic, but it is hard to tell since the internal microphones still pickup the sounds all around. Very frustrating that Apple doesn't allow a better method to control which microphones you want to use when connecting an external mic.
What app are you using?
Try just tapping the throat mic and the tapping the phone as you record. Then you will know what is really happening.
RoboVox. Throat mic isn’t detected. Just internal mic. Can you post links to the specific TRRS splitter you are using? Also which iPhone version and iOS version?

Is this method also working for Bluetooth Speakers?
Unfortunately they don’t make a Bluetooth throat mic. But I only use Bluetooth speakers that also have an aux input. I recently am using a small square Bluetooth speaker from amazon and am working on a retro fit to my helmet with it. I will post how it’s coming.
Sorry, what I mean was the output to the speaker. Instead of plugged in 3.5mm jack to the speaker, can I connect my phone to the speaker using Bluetooth?
@@xhonwills2052 So I bought the Voice Changer Plus- Pranker IOS app that said it can do Bluetooth. and yes it can output to a Bluetooth speaker as the Robovox IOS app cannot. the problem is you need to access the Iphone via the throat mic using the headphones port. So it wants to output the audio via the headphones port. and I have tried to see if the app can separate the input audio as headphones and audio out as bluetooth and it wont do it. So I think the only option is to use the headphones port. either as a 3.5mm jack, or lightning adaptor on IOS phones, or a micro USB on android phone with an adaptor to a 3.5mm plug.
The Voice changer app also had a big delay using bluetooth airpods and outputting to my bluetooth speaker and also the volume was really low. this method bypassed my headphone amplifier which was necessary to get the speaker output to be louder than my natural voice.

How to do the breathing
Well the mask has plays two sets of breathing when you push the button. But I see what you are saying. I have made a soft clearing my throat sound that simulates the breathing with the throat mic.
It’s not too good of a Vader voice . I feel you could do a better job practicing his voice and add an amplifier
Right, James Earl Jones has a particular accent that is kind of difficult to reproduce. It’s pretty good though
Now with smartphones no longer coming with headphone jacks, another solution must be found :(
Depending on the smartphone you have you can get headphone jack adapters. I have one for my iPhone. They should make them for android too.

Bluetooth would be ideal, but in my opinion the wireless technology only works with one connection at a time. You would need a mic connection and a separate speaker connection. Let me know if you find a solution! I would love to try it!
I just read online that you can do this with the new dual audio options available to phones since 2021. It says you can share the audio outs but it remains to be seen if one can be an input and a different output.
It still might not be loud enough. You need a way to put a amplifier before the Bluetooth speaker.
