- Rocky Mountain oysters are deep-fried bull testicles. Denver's 125-year-old restaurant The Buckhorn Exchange is the most famous purveyor of this regional treat. The Buckhorn Exchange is part restaurant, part Wild West museum, with hundreds of taxidermy animals and Western memorabilia covering the walls. Insider’s Joe Avella stopped by to learn about this Denver institution.

I was on holiday in Spain a few years ago and I saw another diner at a restaurant tucking into the most delicious looking dish
I asked the waiter what it was and he replied “Those are bull testicles, we honour the courage of the bull from the bull fight by cooking them perfectly”
Me “I’ll have them - they look delicious”
Waiter “Senor - we only have one serving a night so come back tomorrow”
So I came back the next day and the waiter served me the smallest looking meatballs I’d ever seen so I asked “why does it look nothing like the dish I saw last night?”
He replied “Senor, some days the matador wins the bull fight but today he did not”

The deer at 0:40 witnessed the first rocky mountain oyster being severed from its owner and he saw too much so the butcher had to get rid of him. This was the last thing the deer ever saw. His reaction frozen in time.

I’m a chef in summit county Colorado. It’s about an hour drive up the mountains from Denver. I remember the first time I made these for people up here and they were freaked out. Surprised me considering people in the flats love them
That moment he sliced the "oysters" at the start, i felt that.
What's next, a deep fried shaft to go with that?
Well that’s it. I’m not gonna eat for the next week.
I've seen walking canes made from bull penises advertised, and toothpicks made from racoon penises.
I’ve seen some restaurants serve ox dick or horse dick. They’re expensive though.
Don't be wilfully obtuse....that's how they cook the tip.

I went there and had the Rocky Mountain Oysters, they were delicious. We ordered a huge appetizer sample platter. The RMOs we're my favorite, the rattlesnake dip was my second favorite out of all the stuff. Super neat restaurant too.

I had them once in Boulder. I vaguely remembered Rocky mountain oysters were something strange, but I was A.) Drunk and B.) Hungry, but honestly I was amazed with how good it was. It was like a mix of pork and chicken
That's how you get people to eat. Get em good and drunk.
Ahhh. The "drunk munchies" strike again! Of course, in Colorado, it could be the TRUE munchies too, 😆!
What came first? The pig or the chicken? According to this description, the bull probably did.

I grew up in the neighborhood behind the restaurant when it was section 8 housing. They used to let the kids come in and take mints at the front desk. Their buffalo steak was delicious.

I clicked because “you call this thing oyster”!?
As someone from CO i love people's reactions when they find that out. I especially love the reaction from kids who grew up eating fast food "Gross i'd never eat that" When in reality it's more healthy and nutritious than any food they've ever eaten in the city. Poor kids have only ever eaten fast food and factor farmed meats from wal-mart i feel bad lol i grew up on natural farm raised food.
I actually prefer bull nuts to oysters because fresh seafood doesn't exist here it's all frozen and delivered from elsewhere.
