  • I use Eastwood Fast Etch to remove the rust and apply a few coats of epoxy primer. Then I weld the outer wheelhouse into place. Rockin and rolling!

I love the fast etch. Even if the epoxy doesn't adhere, a good sanding right before will cut it. It helps you be able to have a longer work time with you bare metal without it rusting on you.

I scuffed it really well and the epoxy seemed to stick like a champ. Luckily our climate is quite dry and that reduces flash rust issues.

I'm at the same point in my '67's build. I plan to use the same processes as you. Got to get things rustproofed!

That's awesome! I want this car to last as long as possible.

Loving the Eastwood fast etch, looks like it works great. I am getting some now!

Yeah, I'm happy with how it turned out. Make sure whatever you're putting over it is compatible with acid etching.

Nicely done! You definitely have the right approach with pretreating the panels with Epoxy Primer and the edges with weld thru. Seen many channels on here use Weld thru, but leave large panels uncoated with no apparent way to treat them later. Have fun with your project. We are enjoying following along. Mike

Thanks a bunch! I figure while I've got it opened up I might as well add some protection. Cheers!

I have watched all your videos on the Camaro & enjoyed them. I am also glad you like Fitzee because I watch all of his also. My 65 Nova has more rust than your Camaro, so I am doing pretty much the same as you.

    looking good
good to see you treating the surfaces before welding give it a chance at lasting longer
i always like using red oxide for my rust protection have for ove 40 years seems to last well
if i were doing that i'd leave the inner wheel tub out till you fit the floor since there mini tubs you might find problems in the fitting around them
also after you've done it use seam sealer rond the outer wheel tub where it butts to the quater panel this will prevent moisture getting in there

Thanks a bunch! I am unfamiliar with red oxide. I'll look into it. Yeah, I'm going to install the inner wheelhouse after the floor is in place. Then I can make any necessary adjustments. Then everything will get seam sealer. Cheers!

You do know that UNLESS the epoxy primer your using says it can be used over any etching (acid) product applying epoxy over acid etch primer or acid etch products is a BIG NO NO -The epoxy will not adhere properly. Almost all the epoxy primers I have used say NOT to use over any acid products UNLESS properly neutralized. Before you get to deep with that procedure check the spec sheets on the epoxy your using. I use SPI epoxy and frankly there's no need for any other product-A added benefit is the epoxy works BETTER than any weld through primer too- I use a small dremel bit to remove the epoxy INSIDE the hole where your doing your plug weld Most of the time the epoxy will actually reflow inside the weld not burn off.

That's a good point. I called Pro Form and they said it will work just fine. I was wondering how bad the epoxy would contaminate my welds, and since I have some weld through, I didn't want to risk it. I may give that a try. Thanks!
