- About 17 years of evolution and this DIY CNC Router is almost perfect. Join me on this walk around where I explain why I changed from MACH 3 to Centroid Acorn for the controller. What changes I made on the machine over the years to make it much more flexible for the various applications I have for the router. See a one of a kind, automatic tool change system that uses a common 2.2kw collet type spindle. There is plenty to see and hopefully some good ideas can be had along the way.

I have a Mori Sl1h lathe I bought with a recent centroid oak conversion. The machine was functional but lacking a few small things. I negotiated to have hard buttons for feed hold and cycle start added before I would buy it. Rapid over ride I use through the wireless pendant and some through the touch screen. I will say anyone thinking about going to Centroid. Hard buttons for cycle start, feed hold, rapid over ride and touch screen make for a much more efficient and comfortable control. I looked for the schematics this morning to see what I still have and found something that may help. They are not marked "Final" so I am not sure if they are or are not. You will have to use them only as a rough guide. Where do you want me to send them too, they are in PDF format.

I really like your video and much thanks for taking the time to create this. I'm in the process of upgrading my controls software to Acorn and would like to use your cabinet layout as a reference. This is my first time doing this and have some apprehension but I've done electrical work, low voltage mostly, and if I take my time and reach out when I need help I'm not worried.
I started my CNC adventure a few years ago to make parts for my 1940 Ford street rod and bought a 24"by36" CNC router then a 3D printer. Like you I'm not one to leave things alone and trying to make what I have better and along the way get a better idea of what I have and how it works.
One question, regarding the wiring in the enclosure. Are you using shielded wire for all your wire runs and if so what wire do you use?

Yes, shielded wires - I usually buy it from McMaster.com and look for "high flex" for any cables that have to move. It is pretty darn expensive compared to "ordinary cables" so be prepared.

I get it, that is just one of the reasons why I abandoned MACH software. Don't get me wrong, MACH is (was) amazing and Art did an incredible jobs creating it from the framework of another CNC software package.
But if all you ever experienced is MACH, then you don't know what "real", industrial level CNC is like. The Centroid Acorn package is pretty damn robust, ESPECIALLY when you take into account the price point.

If I understand correctly your ATC System is electro mechanic. It doesn't use pneumatics. Is that correct? If so, any plans or docs you could share? I could probably go thru your videos too. It'd just be nice to at least have a parts list to start in order to understand how it all comes together.

The system does use pneumatics for :
Advance / retract of the spindle lock
Advance / retract of the tool magazine lock
When I designed and created that entire system, I had no idea if it would ultimately work so I never documented the process. Knowing what I know now and how much everyone is interested in it, I should have! THere are a number of videos about it on this channel that should give you a good idea of how it works and what is used in it.

if we talk about high speed AC sindles there is no difference between air cooled and water cooled. it's a two variants of same thing.
the only difference is in operation. water cooled are much quieter and cleaner in operation.
i personally use an 2.2kW water cooled one (ER20). two pipes, bucket of coolant and a fish tank pump - that's all. it's really quiet.
