  • 2023 Volkswagen Golf R wagon 0-100km/h & engine sound, with and without launch control. Includes 1/4 mile and 0-200. Head over to performancedri... four our full review.
    2023 Volkswagen Golf R wagon
    2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder
    235kW (320PS) and 420Nm
    Seven-speed dual-clutch auto, all-wheel drive
The latest Mk8 Golf R is available in five-door hatch and wagon format, however, there is currently a pause on new orders in Australia due to production-related delays. Both are powered by the latest tune of VW’s famous 2.0-litre EA888-based turbo four-cylinder engine, developing 235kW and an impressive 420Nm.
If you’re not a fan of hatchbacks or wagons, Volkswagen Australia also offers the Tiguan R which is basically identical, albeit 139kg heavier. The extra weight influences an increase in the official 0-100km/h time from 4.9 seconds in this to 5.1 in the Tiguan R.
Interestingly, the Golf R Wagon is priced from $69,990 and the Tiguan R is priced just $500 north, from $70,490 (both excluding on-road costs). We can see the Tiguan R being more popular as it does fit the fashionable SUV mould. For us though, the Golf R Wagon is the one that has our hearts beating with fondness... 0 to 100 in 4.9 seconds in a 2L 4Cyl wagon that also uses half the fuel of a V8 commodore. I never thought Id see the day.

@@14miragecourt i had a 2010 ve ss 6L v8 commodore which averaged 14L per 100 km and thats driving it as economically as I could. I know for a fact that many new smaller cars that are faster use about 8L per 100km or even less. Thats where I found my real world figure champ. By owning one

I think you know there were fuel improvements with the later vf model. Real world golf r is more like 10l/100km.

@@14miragecourt I owned a 2013 VF (L77 DoD) and 2017 VF2 (LS3). The VF was pretty gutless and was only economical on the highway with cylinders deactivated. The VF2 was much quicker but the LS3 mowed through fuel, averaged over 15L/100km in the real world. Now own a Golf R which would pip both for straight line speed, drinks 9L/100km. The cars aren't comparable but technology has definitely moved on.

This is honestly such a perfect car. The price to performance and amenities/comfort is quite good. It's a daily, a family car and a toy packaged in one. It's a surprisingly grown up car.

Wish there was a warm Golf that sat below the GTI. Something with 140-150kw like a Mazda G25 or Cerato GT but still in comfy everyday spec. The 110kw engine on the R Line doesn’t cut it - the 140TSI from other VW Group cars would suit it better.

Can sum up the Cupras, having two of them.
Ateca - Look nice, cheap interior parts, stick to the ground well, limit on factory tires around a roundabout is 83, 0-100 is about 5.2 with two big dudes in it, draggy verified, sound system is shit, exhaust is...well it's a modern day exhaust in a 4 cyl. 😫 But pops twice when you lift off over about 3500 RPM, Rear seat room is surprisingly good, same goes for boot space, AC struggles, seats comfy, Cupra button is awesome! Easy to launch it, unlike our Arteon for example that's got its launch burried in sub menus.
Leon VZX - Wheel spin for days, also holds on like it's on rails, interior slightly more premium feeling, same shit sound system, same sounds from exhaust, to me at least, a lot of other VAG interior issues like bad back lighting for AC controls, boots good for a hatch, haven't found it's limit round a roundabout and it's 0-100 varies from 5.5 - 6.5 seconds.
Keen to try Formentor. So far only sat in one when we got our other Cupras. But the vzx launches better with less wheel spin from what I've seen, has a small interior space than the Ateca, smaller boot, but interior is exactly like the Leon. Magazines I've read show 0-100 as low as 4.5.
Keen for these guys to do some videos though, see their thoughts.
