  • All-Star Guitar Jam with Johnny Winter, Neal Schon, David Gilmour, Brian Setzer, Dickey Betts, Dave Edmunds, Steve Cropper, Link Wray, and more, backed by Chuck Leavell, Kenny Aaronson, and others taped 11-20-84 in Passaic, New Jersey and later broadcast on television. The BetaGems channel also has "Pink Floyd 4-14-94 San Diego UNRELEASED," "Allman Brothers 9-8-91 Sub Base Groton CT UNRELEASED," "Brian Setzer & Dickey Betts 11-20-84 PT 2 late night TV performance," "Allman Brothers 2-29-96 late night TV performance," "Allman Brothers 11-15-94 late night TV performance," "Stray Cats 10-17-81 late night TV performance," "Graham Nash & Gregg Allman January 1991 TV intvw/performance" (a rare entire episode of a shortlived interview/performance series), "Gregg Allman 1-15-88 late night TV performance," and "Neal Schon 11-20-84 TV performance New Jersey." You can catch a fabulous complete concert set featuring Kenny Aaronson and Michael Shrieve playing with Sammy Hagar & Neal Schon and their shortlived band HSAS by searching BetaGems for "Sammy Hagar & Neal Schon 11-14-83 San Jose CA rare original broadcast."
BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on CZcams or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. Some of the programming is strictly regional, mostly from the San Diego area.

Quite the jam. Sound board techs must’ve been ripping their hair out keeping this together.

Okay, a lot of great guitar players, but can you imagine how many guitar techs are backstage?

MTV did a concert/documentary about great guitarists. They had these guys each play a song or two and then they talked about other greats, Clapton Page, etc. one of the best programs MTV ever made.

I was there. Some of it is foggy, and some of it is vivid. You know how it is.
