Clarification: This is summer time. (Proper slaughter is usually in the fall/or new year) Near the end of the film you can see them cutting the ears of the reindeer, this is done to "earmark" to a specific set of "signs" that belong to people. Aka, marks so that they can differentiate reindeer definitely as to who it belongs to. The process of marking ears can be compared to branding in the cattle industry. The ears stop bleeding quite fast (In modern day there is a powder used to stop bleeding) and the pain is minimal as compared to branding or similar.
This nomadic herding`s origins can be traced back around 8000 years (Alta rock carvings, UNESCO heritage site) And is still a big part of Scandinavian Sami peoples lives. Although it has been modernized and is usually un-recognizable from this video in it`s modern form. Most of the cultural heritage is still alive and is practiced by Sami people still today. However, the pressure of modern colonial expansion and commercial development (mining, wind-farms, electrical masts, commercial forestry, train-tracks) along with global warming is threatening the existence of this way of life.
