Autumn Colours at the LAKE DISTRICT - Too late or too early?

  • Autumn Colours at the LAKE DISTRICT - Too late or too early? I photograph autumn colours at Loughrigg Tarn & Rydal Water
It was a last minute decision to fly up to the Lakes Yesterday (18th Oct) to capture the lovely colours we expect to find this time of year.
Photographing autumnal colours can be harder than you think!. The location itself can be quite a challenge. More often than not, as is the case with most of the Lakes, the trees are mainly ever-greens. Your timing has to be spot-on too. Too early and the leaves won't display the rich colours we want. Too late and you're in danger of a single day of bad weather stripping the trees of all their beauty!
I can't say I was a little disappointed but the colours weren't just rich enough for me. Maybe I should have left it for another week? Having said that some of the trees already looked to dropping their leaves. The weather forecast for next week looks less than favourable too. Maybe this was the only chance I had?
No matter what, I'm fairly happy with the outcome. A few nice shots I suppose.
The ray of light to come from this trip for me was just how gorgeous Rydal Water was. I turned up just as the sun was setting. I hadn't planned on visiting that particular area but I am so glad I did. I fully intend to revisit Rydal and I'll probably stay over and capture a sunset and sunrise!
    THANK YOU
    Gary

Gary, I watch your videos partly because of the Lake District location. My parents, in their youth, were members of a hiking club, spending many hours hiking in the Lakes. I've been several times so it's quite nostalgic for me. Thanks. Keep up the good work.

Nice vlog Gary. I think it is important for people to see the successful trips and unsuccessful ones for us to all know that landscape photographers don’t have all the luck. Many of us are amateurs that don’t get much time to go out and it would be easy to get disheartened if we don’t get good shots every time. Thanks

Thanks Gary, glad to see you return to the lake boathouse again. That you may be past peak foliage, no matter, Mother Nature left you some nice muted colors anyway! It is what it is... Looking forward to those other places you scouted out for future landscape shots. Really enjoying your videos Gary. Getting the best Autumn colours really is tricky, it varies so much depending where one is in the country. PS I think I'm with you on the drystone walls which cross these landscapes, guessing folks had way more time on their hands back in the day and their sheep were valuable to them so they couldn't afford to risk them wandering off. Your love of what you do really comes across in your videos, this makes a big difference as far as I'm concerned, Thomas Heaton has the same honest content. Good on you, take it easy. cheers.

Hi Gary. It's the annual dilemma isn't it? I find myself doing more scouting missions at this time of year to try and get the timing right. I've just had a weekend in Snowdonia and the colours weren't quite fully turned (still great though!) but here in South Wales it's bang on. What a great place Loughrigg Tarn looks. I like the philosophy of 'good or not, let's show it'. As you say it's more realistic, and really shows process, not just product. We all try, fail, succeed, fail again...get something but not the spectacular thing we'd have really liked to get..etc. In a way, that's why we do it - it isn't easy. If you can show that in your work then relative beginners like me can see there's hope for all of us. Again, very enjoyable vlog.

You showed some stunning locations even though you didn't bag the money shot you still got some nice images and now have plans to re visit. You shouldn't be so tough on yourself- these are still great images. I love the Lake District and agree it's a great feeling when you discover somewhere new. I'm also amazed at the straight walls - didn't they know sheep can jump! Great to hear you're thinking of posting more vlogs, good or bad. Hope the wife is up for more walking!

The Tarn location looks stunning, I would be delighted if I'd taken shots like your "snapshots".
Looking forward to you revisiting the Tarn and seeing how things turn out.
    Thanks Gary.

Great video Gary, I truly hope you post every week. Here in Missouri we are still waiting for fall to peak. I went out this morning and really had a good time just enjoying the fresh air and quiet. I tried to take a few shots, but nothing came out the way I hoped. It’s good to have a reason (photography) to get outside in the fall (or Autumn). I enjoy all of your videos, so please post them all. Have an awesome day buddy. It was good to see your wife with you.

Gutted i did not visit the tarn last week when i visited Rydal and climbed Loughrigg fell. Still gives me something to look forward to next time. Great to Mrs G in the video, wondered who was doing the B Roll for you lol. Well done paula :) Great shots as usual, even if only snapshots :P

Looks like you have some good colours there, Gary. Some lovely photos too. Over here (Isle of Man) there isn't too much colour. The trees are either still green or lost their leaves completely. I was looking forward to getting out and getting some autumnal photos this year, but not found a location worthy yet.

I think it's pretty much the same here too. It might be due to the long hot summer we had? Fancy complaining about that :)

Mrs. Gough has point, maybe you should get her to do your makeup before a vlog? Great vlog as always, disappointment or not.

Hi Gary I enjoyed your video, I was up at Loughrigg Fell on the same day for the dawn, however I drove 2 hours to Wast Water for the sunset and glad I made that silly road trip! :)

I will enjoy seeing any of your vlogs Gary. I am off to the Lake District soon and your vlogs inspire me and show me what to look for. I feel I cant see the wood for the trees sometimes. Nice to see your wife. I am that person too- no make-up - no photo. 😄😀←

I jealous of you lucky sod, that you can pop across to the Lake District in a spare half a day; it would take me long just to drive up there!! :-( I guess you didn't have time to pop into the Badger Bar in Rydal for a swift one and a bite to eat!! Too early in terms of great autumn colours I think, but it's a great location at anytime of the year. Either way, yet more great images.

Good morning Gary, I see your point about Rydal but your Loughrigg shots are lovely, its a beautiful spot and there's also great shots available from up on Loughrigg fell (behind the yellow tree). I've tagged you on one of my shots from Loughrigg, I hope you like it, see you soon Del.

Gary, I think your panorama shot was pretty darn good. Give it a week and take a look at it again and you may feel differently.
