  • Against the Storm is one of the best city-builders on the market, and while the RNG can be punishingly brutal at times, the roguelite elements will keep you on your strategic building toes, as no two settlements will ever be the same. The game has been in Early Access since last November, and at 1.0 release it's sitting at 95% on Steam with over 15,000 reviews, so I can easily say that the game speaks for itself in regards to how good it is.

    I've watched many reviews of this game, yours is hands down the best. And you even called it a rogue-LITE (not a rogue-like) which I think is awesome that there are creators who still care about using the terminology correctly!

    After playing Timberborn (A kind of relaxing strategic city builder), I really wanted to get my hands on something with a bigger challenge. The problem I often come across with city builders is that after a while near end game, It gets quite stale. Having the “best” upgrades makes a game quite boring since the challenges have vanished. With Against the Storm, you never have this issue. I feel like the game/settlements just ends at the right time before you start having the best setup etc. As you stated in the video, the RNG makes no two settlements the same, whereas you have to build around what you get and what you have. This game is easily the best city builder I have ever built and your review is absolutely spot on.

    Have already around 200h clocked during EA and the game feels fresh enough. Still find things that I haven't tried/explored yet and I'm happy to dive into the 1.0 release for some more of it. Definitely one of the best/most unique city builders out there.

    Yeah, the queen can be brutal with her impatience. Played only about 20h so far. Game mission success rate is 1/6 so far (2nd level difficulty).
    I feel the need of almost more resilience than my citizens. 😅 But I love the game anyway. In fact I believe most times I lost, because of lack of understanding some details or mechanics, or lack of overview and sub optimal decisions and strategies.
    I still learn more how the systems and layers interact, and while often I lost just by a little bit, I keep learning and understanding why.
    I got this gem in the late EA phase maybe a month before 1.0. I hadn't played it much at the beginning, and I had lost quickly before I realized I needed a switch in strategy and first thought the RNG was too punishing. But I started growing more interested and fond of it over time. Really great and the developers deserve Kudos for their great work and including the community of gamers offering suggestions. Looking forward to the next 100 hours...

    Thanks for this review! Can you save the game or are you forced to do "a run" up to the next wipe? This sounds fun but long sessions are not always feasible for me.

    • @HForHavoc

      The game will auto save periodically and when you exit the game. So the run will start up right where you left off when you boot the game again

    I love strategy and building, but my ADHD brain makes it hard to manage late-game builds without considering how I "should" have started out, and wind up restarting way more than I finish. AtS really caters to that playstyle like no other game does.
    Plus it has foxes, so Game of the Year for me. :D

    Is this game better than Frostpunk??

    • @HForHavoc
      @HForHavoc  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Ehhhhhh they're more like two completely separate types of city builders that are hard to compare. Frostpunk has the doom and gloom down much better, and you definitely interact with your people more than in Against the Storm. It's resource management is far simpler however, and the game is VERY linear, meaning I can do all the exact same things every single time I play.
      Against the storm isn't nearly as intense of a survival city builder (altho at the Prestige levels it can certainly feel that way), but the fact you'll never play the same way twice is extremely refreshing, and it has more complex systems in place than Frostpunk does.
      As cliche as it sounds, it's like comparing apples to oranges. You may really like both, and they're both fruits, but you use them differently, eat them in different ways, and they're both great, just very different lol.

    Just because a game has 95% approval rating, doesn't mean it's good. Is Justin Bieber a great singer when he's number #1 on the Billboard? Is No-Man's-Sky suddenly a good game with a recent approval rating of 96%? No, I played NMS recently, and it's average at best.

    • @HForHavoc
      @HForHavoc  Před 8 měsíci +26

      I'd say that's a pretty flawed logic system, and you're more coming from the perspective that this game doesn't jive with you, which is fine, but that doesn't mean it's not a good game.
      AtS has garnered 15,000 reviews in 12 months, ranked at #271 in top sellers on Steam, while ALWAYS remaining overwhelmningly positive, which is relatively unknown for a strategy game, much less a peaceful city-builder.
      I think that's damn indicitive of a postiive reaction by a large portion of the gaming community that it IS a good game.

      This is flawed logic. There are lots of great games that I just am not interested in but that doesn't make them bad, just not for me.
      Going thru life believing that *everything should be catered to you specifically* is a child's thinking. If you don't like something that someone else does? Just move on. You didn't even try this game.

      lmao this is hilarious. So basically the aggregate score of tens of thousands/hundreds of thousands of gamers is negated because YOU didn't like it.
      So by this logic .... YOUR opinion > the combined reviews of tens/hundreds of thousands of people collective....
      God the internet is an awful stupid place.

      "YOUR opinion > the combined reviews of tens/hundreds of thousands of people collective"
      Nope, not just MY opinion, but the opinions of hundreds of millions who never bought the game, and who think it sucks, but who can't leave a review, since they don't own the game.
      For you to think that a games with the highest reviews are always the best games is absolutely hilarious.
      People Playground is the second highest rate game on Steam, and according to you it should be considered an amazing game.
