@@joesmithguide well with these two tracks there is more than one reason. First is due to how close the racing is; when the whole field of cars at Talladega can go past the start/finish line in less than 2 seconds, no other track can compare. Along with that is the speed; going 200 mph around the whole track, it's hard to get away from somebody because of the draft everyone gets, even nowadays its impossible without help; but it's not just how fast they're going around the track, but how they maintain that speed.
That is when we are separating these tracks from others, no other track has a draft that can work as well as Daytona or Talladega with these car packages and even if there is a glimpse of a chance, it's not as effective. You can also add that you don't need to run anywhere close to the wall the entire race. With all other tracks you see drivers using up the whole track for the fastest speed or time.
So why the yellow line rule? Well it's for safety if anything. Otherwise drivers would be running each other to the grass 9/10 races (granted they already do that) but it also is supposed to be a punishment if you "disobey". Sadly it's kinda like the pass interference in the NFL, or a foul in Basketball, it's up for interpretation if they ran below or was forced below. Is everyone going to like it? Absolutely not; there are a couple of penalties I disagree on and some I believed should of been enforced, but I'm not apart of race control so it's what we got.
If you go full-car below the line, sure. But he was on the line, not over it. Haley should've won.
Riley Rios they way I look at it is if the “best drivers in the world” can’t figure out when they should or shouldn’t take the risk of going below the line that’s a problem
@@connorallen8111 it's not so much a should or shouldn't, but more of a "will they make a move". With the playoffs incentive that winning meaning more than ever, and Daytona is the final race at the end of the regular season, so why wouldn't a driver who has no other way of making it take a shot?
In the end it's a perspective on the rule, kinda like how drivers should race. Some people prefer it clean, others are willing to use their car to move them. If drivers are willing to put the bumper to others to move them for a win/championship, you can expect the same thing with or without a yellow line.

@@wackyflappybob Everyone is pissed because the rule says "You can't advance your position under the Yellow line." Here's the problem: It's NEVER consistent. EVER. Just last year one driver went CLEAR TO THE WALL under the Yellow. They gave him the win.
Justin was already in the process of passing and even if he didn't get below, he wouldn't have lost. He didn't use it to advance because he's already made his move. Then there's the other half of the rule: You can't force someone below, but more often than not the driver that forces someone below the line NEVER gets penalized, but the driver that IS FORCED is penalized.
Next comes the reason it was implented, NASCAR wanted plate tracks safer, but since it's implementation, there have been on average 2.7 more big crashes (9 or more cars) per superspeedway crash every race. So the reason for it is shit too. So in short we hate it, because it's a blatant gimmick of a broken rule that hasn't worked in it's entire history.

I guess to allow the safety personnel to get to the drivers faster. I do think it was odd though, the drivers would have been slowed down by the time they reached the backstretch. I wonder if someone in the control tower gives the okay for personnel to enter the race track? Maybe the head safety person demanded the yellow?
Because wrecked cars were going back onto the track into the path of cars at racing speed. If the cars went into the infield and stayed there they likely would have kept it green.
@@Thumbsupurbum Race was going to.be over though once they got to the start/finish line. So the cars would be slowed way down by then. Track personnel would have been able to ho out 10 seconds later.

The double yellow should be a rule, Tony Stewart flipping through the air on Feb 18 2001 and not knowing who the president was when Bobby Labonte asked him after he landed on his hood and coming to a rest in the infield is a fine example of why it should be a rule. Safety trumps excitement, and if safety had been placed in emphasis in the 90's after NASCAR already knew the sport was dangerous maybe we would have gotten to watch Adam Petty, Kenny Irwin Jr, and Dale senior for a little bit longer.

I was at the talladega race when Gordon won over dale Jr. I told a girl I was dating (her 1st race) “oh this is gonna be ugly.” Beer cans went flying. Lol.
If I remember this is the race that brought the green white checkered. I think they’d had a lot of races finish under caution and fans were fed up with them. Especially that day.

3 Rules that need to change immediately:
1. Remove the yellow line rule.
2. Remove the moment of caution rule. Do it based on data from the previous scoring loop.

And that's not exactly a bad thing. Racing to the caution *was* a big part of NASCAR. It allowed some profound moments, despite the glaring risk.
Lest anyone forget that they usually didn't race back anyway, but think NASCAR *could* bring it back, in a way that allows for incredible finishes like the 2001 EA Sports 500, or 2002 Kroger 300...
Lorenzo Bruno Bossio the only cars that raced back were the ones who were either just lapped or about to get lapped. Hence the lucky dog rule.

He already had the lead, and then got just below it. And Smith wasn't forced down there, he went down there at his own will. If he wanted to win the race, he should have let Tony turn into him and take him out.

I thought when it happened that Haley had already taken the lead before dropping below the yellow line, but I can also see the point about him not needing to go down there anyway. As for Regan Smith, I also agree that he should have just held his line like Keselowski did to Carl Edwards in '09 and just turned him if Stewart blocked him. I've never had a problem with the yellow line rule, but I'd take it even further and penalize guys even if they are forced down there. Don't let someone force you down there. Hold your line and turn them if they cut you off or block you below the yellow line.
@@kodyhightower1903 I 100% agree with you when it comes to holding your line. I was a Tony Stewart fan as well. I'm a Harvick fan but I do like Larson. I have a little bias in this as well but at the same time Regan went down there at his own will. Sure Stewart tapped him but Regan did go down to probably avoid a wreck and that cost him the race for not holding the line. And if Dale Jr was the winner of that Dega race, then I have no problem stating Haley won that race in 2018. I see your point Haley didn't need to go down there, I just felt like he swept to the left so fast he didn't realize is and was only focused on the finish line.
I think the two lessons that should be used as examples of holding your line when getting blocked are that 2009 Carl Edwards vs Keselowski example, and then later in 2009 when Stewart turned Kyle Busch for the win at Daytona. The first block is fine, but if you block more than once then the second driver should hold their line and turn you. A lot of people also don’t understand that on the last lap blocking is different in that the back car isn’t gonna cut you any slack even if you are clear. You can be clear and still get turned if you are clear by such a little margin that you don’t have a chance to get your whee perfectly straight before the car behind you bumps you. If the whee isn’t perfectly straight the front car will spin 9 times out of 10. It’s what happen to kyle Busch that night, what happened to Almirola at Daytona in 2018 and what happened to newman the other night.

That yellow line rule is dumb as hell. I get having some sort of track limit for stuff like preventing drivers from cutting the track, safety reason, etc, but there is not a single racing series I can think of that enforces their track limits like this. He was at top speed coming out of the draft and cut across the whole track for the win and the only thing he did was have two wheels on the yellow line. I don't think you could ask for a cleaner move in a series like NASCAR.

The ones enforcing the rules, like S1apSh0es said in his worst calls in NASCAR video, are human beings, they make mistakes. Unfortunately, the ones making the calls aren't consistent. Dale Earnhardt Junior, for example, went below the yellow line at Talladega in 2003 to advance his position, yet he go no penalty. Yet at the same venue 5 years later, despite the fact that he was forced below the yellow line by Tony Stewart, Regan Smith was snubbed of the win

Haley was already in first when he went below the line. Nascar just didnt want their boy Larson to lose to an upstart.
Seeing as there are many factors to throwing the yellow on the last lap I think it should be reviewed at whatever the point of incident was. whenever the initial car starts to loss it or whatever the case may be it should automatically be from the beginning of the wreck say the first sign of smoke boom freeze frame line em out subtract the cars that are totalled

Jr may have been ahead at the moment of caution but it's only the last lap the use video to go to the exact moment. Otherwise it's the timing lines. I agree though it should have been restarted. They've done one lap dashes before

What they should do is run only four cars at a time for four laps each and with speeds not exceeding 65mph. Top two from each group survives to race the other top twos. The way racing is now is inhumane, you may as well give the drivers knives, eliminate red and yellow flags, and make them fight it out to the death like in ancient Rome.

Moral of the story: at the end of a race, don't throw the caution right after the wreck happens. If a yellow must fly, why not give the drivers an opportunity to race just a bit longer, then throw it right as they approach a camera with a clear angle?

Selective calls for sure. Like when Jimmie Johnson was still in the chase a few years ago. He drove past his pit box and 1/2 the car was still in the next stall when they did the pit stop. But Nascar chose not to penalize him a lap. Or a few weeks ago when they chose to let them drive in the heavy rain until Chase Elliott took the lead, then called the race.
I was at the 2004 499 @ Dega and I’ll never forget the sight of thousands of beers and seat cushions being tossed at Gordon..

You let them race from the backstretch, to the exit of turn 4 and then you throw the yellow lol... let then finish and the spotters need to immediately let the drivers know of the crash on the backstretch

Race ending under green is what caused Newman's crazy wreck at Daytona. If there is a wreck, the caution needs to be thrown.
Notice how none of these are from pre 2001. Yellow line rule and no racing back to yellow is how all these controversies were made. And Nascar wonders why people quit watching...
Well, there are a ton more controversies from the era before electronic timing. I watched the end of the 1988 Pontiac Excitement 400 race at Richmond the other day and They gave the win to Neil Bonnett due to scoring error even though video evidence proved he was a lap down. Ricky Rudd was the actual winner and NASCAR never gave Rudd the win. That mess happened all the time back in the day, especially on short tracks.
No racing to the yellow HAD to be enforced because Dale Jarrett almost got clobbered after his crash in New Hampshire by the lead cars racing back to the flag.

I was at the arrons 499 when Gordon beat Dale jr.. The crazy thing, when Gordon took the lead it was the first time he lead all race then the caution came out. My seat was high up by the richard petty section and to look down the front stretch seeing the beer cans flying from the stands was like nothing i never seen before. It was an onslaught and i was tuned into Gordon's radio and as he came out of turn 4 in cruise mode he said "OH MY GOD!!!" when he seen all the beer cans flying....it was a sight to behold. He did his spins and burn outs with beer hitting his front windshield.

The Hayley deal was, at best, a tough judgement call to make, but in the end, the right one. Using football as an example, if a player's foot touches, but does NOT cross the sideline, they're still called out of bounds. At the exact moment Hayley's left side tires touch the yellow line (at 0:58 in), he is still just slightly behind the 1 and 42, and this is the moment that he should be considered out of bounds. Even IF Sadler had moved down to block, all that would have done is possibly get both the 1 AND 24 penalized - Hayley for passing below, Sadler for forcing a driver below (the rule states: "pass below, you will be penalized. Force a driver to pass below, you will ALSO be penalized"), thus handing the win to Larson.
The finish between Hamilton and Spencer is only "controversial" because Ultra Motorsports (and Spencer himself) assumed that the 2 was leading at the caution and had thus won. Remember, this is the same organization that assumed Ted Musgrave had won the 2003 championship, despite the fact that Ted had been posted for clearly passing before start-finish on the final restart. NASCAR shouldn't have let the 2 truck into victory lane until they knew for sure (which is something they've since gotten better at doing - see the Almirola/Allgaier deal later in the video).
The third clip really wasn't controversial at all. The caution needed to come out there, given that a car had just turned over into turn one. The lack of a clearly definitive angle of the leaders at the moment of caution is maybe the only point of contention here. Either way, RCR would have won, so only Harvick or Bowyer would have anything to complain about here.
A lot of people forget that, prior to the GWC rules, that NASCAR would announce at the drivers meeting the "Red Flag Lap" - that being, the final lap on which NASCAR would consider using the red flag to attempt to fit a final restart in. For the Talladega race in question, that was Lap 183. The caution for Vickers came out on 184, and officially started on Lap 185, thus meaning that no matter how minor the incident was, they would NOT stop the race. Now, they still could have called a quickie yellow on Lap 185, taken one to go on 186, and gone green on 187, BUT the fact that Gordon and Junior were challenging each other as to who was the leader meant NASCAR had to take two full laps to check the video (which again, like the Harvick/Bowyer finish, wasn't very definitive - it couldn't have been as fans are STILL arguing about it to this day...). I'll admit that I'm a Junior fan, but I will also trust NASCAR's judgement, so if they say Gordon led at the moment of caution, then so be it. I'll admit that the final clip was a bad call - either throw the caution immediately, or let the leaders finish. Don't let them get all the way to the frontstretch, THEN throw it while they're basically dead even. That being said, the replay at 13:44 probably ADDED to the confusion - the initial replay at 12:47 is pretty clear...the moment the yellow light comes on in the distance, Almirola is ahead. Then at 13:44 they try to sync up the caution light to the same replay, and when that yellow light comes on, Allgaier is ahead, despite the fact that the yellow light in the distance had been on for a couple seconds before that (nice sync job, NBC!). None of this would have happened if NASCAR had called it immediately, or let the leaders finish, so that's on them.
Even if he didn't go over the *YELLOW LINE* the result would he the same, *A FREAKING WIN*

while they used turn 1s camera we looked at the moment of the wreck. When a wreck happens the moment it happens the caution is supposed to come out. NASCAR had a delayed reaction on calling it.

That last one is ridiculous. I have no problem with caution coming out. Driver safety is important but they needed to throw it sooner. Not wait 20 seconda after it happened. By the time they threw it they might as well let them race half a straight away to the line

How is Regan Smith at Talladega not on here, I always thought it seemed obvious that Stewart forced him below the line and stole a win from Smith when he had a run and made a great move.
I don't consider that when you block somebody or when you want someone no one really forces you to go below the yellow line in my opinion you choose to go down there instead of wrecking that guy it's blocking you instead of turning that guy Regan Smith could have turned Tony he chose not to that's simple

@@ethanwhisman1277 I dont know if you have ever raced before and it's not like I have a true comparison to what Talladega would be like, I drive in the hornet class (4 cly, 2wd, N/A and only allowed to use stock parts) at Evergreen Speedway in WA state. Ive had someone do that to me and when they cut down across like Stewart did to Smith, it's such a natural action to turn away and avoid the wreck. Smith could have held his line and it would have ended like Edwards and Keselowski did in 09, bad wreck and potential serious injuries to drivers and fans.
I've taken both options on track in real life. 1, Turned down the track and into the dirt and grass to avoid a wreck, lost several spots and kept racing. 2, Held my line and the guy came down like I wasn't there, cut my right front tire and lost seven laps in the pits. That said I take option 2 any chance I get, if that tire held up after contact I could have finished top five with that risky dive into turn three cause fuck it, what fun is racing if you dont push it balls out.

@@ethanwhisman1277 I just watched that finish again and Stewart definitely cut down when Smith was already inside, it looks to me like there was contact that hit Smith down. He probably could have pushed his way back up above the line sooner. After watching again I think if he had held at the bottom line both him and Stewart would have been in the wall or even fence giving the win to Menard who was in third at the time.
If you remember tony Stewart was one first drivers to be blacked flagged in 2001 with the yellow line rule I’m think they done to smith because he was a rookie. But I’m glad tony won it was my first race and I wanted him to win.

All of these were the right call imo. The last one is probably the most controversial but they threw the caution because there were about 4 cars way in the back that were still racing towards the crash. I was at the race and I think Allgaier would have won otherwise.
No Dale Jr & Logano controversy in 2015 that ultimately cost Jr his shot at the title since he won Phoenix the next round.

In other forms of racing, a specific area of the course will go under yellow, and a full course yellow is only used for a large crash. It's kind of dumb that the ENTIRETY of a 2.5 mile circuit has to be shut down because of an incident that happened in a single portion of it.

I haven’t been keeping up with NASCAR in years but when I use to watch if there was a caution they allowed them to race to the start finish line. When did they change the rule and why? Seems like a car in the back can determine the winner by causing a crash in the last lap (and that doesn’t seem right).

Collin black the reason we have the rule is because Earnhardt was killed by racing like this in what looked like a business as usual crash at a retro for plate. Yes safety measures are better now than they ever have been, but this seems like a great way of seeing a repeat of 2001

They will throw the caution on the final lap if saftey personal is neeeded. In the case of some races. Multiple hard hits means that the caution will come out
If we be honest, anytime someone goes below even if they are forced, they get penalized so I really don’t understand the rule. It’s rare that the person that forces them down get penalized.

I've never understood why NASCAR doesn't let them race back to the line for a wreck on the backstretch on the last lap like they used to. I thought that's what the Overtime line a few years ago was going to be for but boy was that a disaster. If it were up to me, I'd say for Talladega and Daytona, put a line halfway down the backstretch. If the wreck happens on the last lap before the leader crosses that line, for example, a wreck in turn 1, then the whole field races to that line on the backstretch, and after they cross that line the caution will be shown. So that line in effect becomes the finish line. But if the wreck happens after the leader crosses that line, so a wreck in turns 3 or 4, for example, then they get to race back to the actual start/finish line. This ensures that the finish is determined on the track instead of by a NASCAR official in the press box somewhere.

3 things are what is killing nascar. First is them picking and choosing when to apply the rules to favor drivers they want to push for marketability. Second is when they turned their back on what made them to sell out to fickle fans. Third and most important, they stopped giving back. Tracks like Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, even Bowman Gray back in the day, were races giving back to the fans. They might not of had the most prize money, but fans like that is what made them.
It is precisely, calls like that, that is costing NASCAR viewership. The original understanding of that rule was that the car can not go below the yellow line. Aside from that you were clearly allowed to put part of the car below the yellow line to avoid an accident. When the car started to come down on him and he avoided the accident he was following the rules. How come it is that everybody watching this can know that, except the people from Nascar?
These are very mild in my opinion. I was hoping it would be something akin to Barrichello being told to make way for Schumacher or Rossi kicking Marquez or Ogier slowing down on purpose to get a better starting position for the next stage.

There was no reason that they had to run 5 laps under caution in the 04 Dega race, Vickers pretty much had no parts fly off and there was no report of fluid
