  • My mom is complaining that a radiator is not heating in one of the bedrooms. I flush out and clean out the boiler and then change the air vent. The radiator was nice and hot when I left

    If a steam boiler doesn’t have one of those black upside down triangle looking blow down valves do you need to blow down the water some other way below the water level?? A friend of mine has a steam oil boiler that I don’t think has ever been flushed down but the sight glass is perfectly clear.

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  Před 5 lety

      Yes you can drain the boiler from the lowest drains or add a blow down drain like I did in this video czcams.com/video/kIjZWVZDclw/video.html

    3:25 Most important thing, this is why you take pride in your work. I cannot imagine going though life disliking what I do but doing it because I have to. WD-40....If it doesn't move and it should use WD-40 if it moves and it should not...use duct tape.

      My list of jobs over at my mom's house never ends and I keep adding to the end of the list. Jobs like replacing the valve with a broken handle. Yet I might just buy a new valve and put the handle onto the existing valve. I will still have the spare valve just in case this one or another one leaks.

    Noticed the water heater was made in McBee S.C. The small one stoplight town well known for handing out speeding tickets to travelers heading to Myrtle Beach. They have a huge billboard at the town limit, " Watch Your Speed" with a big finger pointing at you... Needless to say, they got me late one night...

    Good video. Does the air vent usually go high up on the radiator to get rid of the air? Thanks

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  Před 5 lety

      on a hydronic system yes. This is the last loop of the radiator and a steam air vent is always open until it gets hot and then closes down. This way steam doesn't come out of vent, which is a failure of the air vents. Other is it gets stuck closed and air won't come out thereby the radiator remains room temp

    The threads in the steam radiator are damaged, not holding the air vent well. Your advice for a repair solution will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

    For the steam vent, after you, I used Teflon pipe tape. Looks like a high heat compound originally. Thoughts?

    Get your self a bottle of Steamaster tablets and don't put more than one tablet( not so easy to get them during the heating season), this will clean the rust and will keep the boiler water clean, good vids btw

  • @FrozenHaxor

    That radiator only has one pipe connected to it? Never seen that in Europe. Witchcraft!

    • @jeffreyjohn2037
      @jeffreyjohn2037 Před 5 lety +2

      One pipe steam

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  Před 5 lety +1

      its a one pipe steam system. So supply and return in the same pipe. It goes up the pipe as steam and as the steam cools it condenses and goes back to the boiler. It is why the pipes need proper pitching to let the water return back to the boiler

    • @FrozenHaxor
      @FrozenHaxor Před 5 lety +1

      @@thehvachacker That's bizzare. So that valve you've replaced let's some air out of the radiator to attract more steam into it? Doesn't that produce humidity and stinky air from crusty water?

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  Před 5 lety +1

      If the valve is working correctly it is a heat sensitive valve which closes when steam fills the radiator. opens when it starts to cool to allow more steam to enter the radiator. The water may be dark but shouldn't have a smell. I had muddy boiler water yet can't remember a smelly steam system. Now hot water systems the water can get nasty
