  • If you are experiencing burning, tingling, numbness, or shooting pain in your thumb, index and middle fingers, step one is to see a doctor. If you are diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, this self-massage can be great adjunct to other treatments that your doctor may offer.
    I have seen carpal tunnel self-massage videos that involve putting a lot of pressure on the wrist, and therefore the median nerve. Since carpal tunnel syndrome is synonymous with median nerve compression, this seems counterproductive.
    In this video, we take a gentler, and more practical approach to treatment. Follow along as I teach you self-massage techniques, as well as nerve flossing, to help alleviate carpal tunnel symptoms.

      I'm glad it's helpful! You might try using an old tennis ball or lacrosse ball to gently massage your forearm and hand. That way you don't have to work your hands. Here's a video of forearm self-massage using a ball you can check out, but it's not tailored to those with carpal tunnel, so just be slow and gentle, taking care not to worsen symptoms: czcams.com/video/O7CqUbufX4Q/video.html

    Hello Ms. Richards- great video I have been all over youtube and have been doing flossing and hand exercises(tendon glides)- My CTS really has only started about 2 weeks ago. I am an avid exerciser(mostly with home weights)- I am 65 and 5 months young and I am pretty healthy. I drink plenty of water and as mentioned love to exercise. But this CTS has been affecting me ONLY at bedtime. I am woken up at 3 AM by numb fingers(even with wearing a brace) I have a very strong hand grip but this numbness is not painful BUT uncomfortable is how I would categorize the feeling. I really only started to do these types of exercises about 10 days ago and not consistently? From what I have told you- do you think that I can overcome this affliction in time by continuing to do these exercises? As for the myofascial release techniques- my son bought me a Theragun- that I have been using on my forearms and extensors-- is that OK- as a replacement for using my hand to do these massages. I have NO pain when I use it - just not sure it is too aggressive. I do NOT go over the wrist where the nerve is because I was told NOT to aggravate that specific area- so I only do my forearms and extensor and meaty part of the palm. Please advise. I would love to hear what you have to recommend. Thank you so much and stay well.

    • @rachelrichardsmassage9660
      @rachelrichardsmassage9660  Před 2 lety

      Excellent question! It really depends on the severity of the CTS and what stage of healing you're in. If it's acute, I would take it slow. Try it once and see how you feel for a few days. A very general suggestion is to start with 2-3 times/week. It is most important to listen to your body.

    Awesome video, thanks! Is it possible/advisable to do nerve flossing with nerves going to the legs? E.g. in case of a slipped disk and pressure on the nerve in the lower back area?

    • @rachelrichardsmassage9660
      @rachelrichardsmassage9660  Před 4 lety

      Thanks! It would depend on the affected nerve and the underlying cause of injury or symptoms. The sciatic nerve is most often impinged or entrapped at any number of locations, possibly causing symptoms in the back of the hip and and down the leg. You can floss the sciatic nerve, but I recommend first speaking with your doctor and physical therapist, if you are seeing one. If nerve flossing is indicated, make sure you learn how to do it properly. In the meantime, I will add sciatic nerve flossing to my list for future video :)

      That's a great question. It depends on the severity of your carpal tunnel. If your condition is somewhat acute, perhaps only 2 minutes per technique is appropriate - the key is not to irritate symptoms. If your symptoms are relatively mild, you can spend more time with each technique, as long as it's helping and it feels good.

    i've heard that nerve flossing is not good for you in the long term because nerves don't like to be stretched. although it may give some temporary relief in the short term. is there truth to this ?
    i've heard that strengthening the palms helps with carpal tunnel

    • @rachelrichardsmassage9660
      @rachelrichardsmassage9660  Před 2 měsíci

      Nerves, like fascia, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, get stretched and slackened naturally every day as we move our bodies. The nerve flossing technique I teach in this video, however, does not stretch any nerves. The nerves retain their normal length as we gently move them back and forth. As for strengthening the palms, I would strongly advise working closely with a physical therapist to make sure that any exercises you do are not exacerbating your condition.

      @rachelrichardsmassage9660  Před 2 lety +1

      I'm glad it's helpful, Susan! There are no particular braces that I think are superior, and everyone is different. I would recommend winding down and relaxing for an hour before bed - dim lights, no screens, maybe a warm bath, etc, and do some self-massage right before going to sleep. Going to bed more relaxed might help your hands stay relaxed. If you'd like to try a brace, just make sure it's not squeezing your wrist. You don't want to put more pressure on the median nerve.
