Just FYI, the reason for the single high mounted mirror was that Ferrari misunderstood a US import law that said no part of the body could obscure the rear view in the mirror. Since the fenders were so wide, they needed to mount the mirror high. In '87 they realized their mistake and doubled the mirrors and put them in their proper position. The passenger side mirror btw isn't one of those "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" mirrors either. It's a flat pocket-type mirror, allowing you to see 4 inches out the passenger side. In a word, useless. :)
I bought a Lotus Esprit S4 as an adult because I loved the Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge games so much (and had the poster on my bedroom wall) as a kid. I own the car for 10 years now and it still makes me happy. Thank you for the memories! 😊
@@efe_aydal Every dream has its downsides. Though the car is fantastic, and to me has been quite reliable (contraty to popular opinion) it's not always easy or cheap to keep it running. And I'm not rich,...just stupid. 😅
Nice video as usual. I would pick Jaguar XJ220, the Amiga video game was awesome. For those who are interested, the channel Atari Legend just made a documentary on Titus's Crazy Cars games.
This episode hits home. Super Cars II was my favourite game on my ST. The bowling alley I went to regularly had the sit-in hydraulic Outrun cabinet that was, and still is, one of the coolest things ever. I played that a lot, and would have played it more if I had had the pocket money
Andy makes the most complete and accurate videos about the story of every car he's presenting. His channel Little Car where he talks about concept cars, miniatures, more details about production cars and does interviews of car designers is also very interesting.
This was excellent, you had me glued to the screen. It would be great to do a series of collaborative videos like this with other subjects rather than cars, like planes, sport personalities, film tie ins, etc.
Adding the history of the cars really makes this video pop. This is a great collaboration. Test Drive on the C64 and the follow Test Drive 2 which I bought the DLC for. The California pack was my favorite. I think Corvette was my favorite to use for the California drive.
From the late 80's, it was Outrun's Testarossa and Chase HQ's Porsche 928 for me. Always a treat seeing the rare sight of a black 928 on the road in real life, ultimate nostalgia. Let's go Mr. Driver!
Agreed, I still lust after a black 928 to this day! 928s also made an appearance in the movies 'Risky Business' and 'Weird Science' which are also partly responsible for my longing!
Interesting how nostalgia works @ 25:00 For me it always was Lotus III, so many great memories, boy have I played that game with friends enjoying that kicking soundtrack!
A Lotus Esprit Turbo was very nearly my first car (in 2012!), thanks to that game! But I think you might have missed a trick, Neil! The Cizeta V16T is a much much more interesting car than the Alfa could ever hope to be. Everything about it is just sheer madness!
I found one of them over the local tip back in around 86 it had no seat, no chain, no brakes. So i took it home for the mag wheels & put them on my burner. Next Christmas after that a friend in the street (only him & his mum) she got him a Raleigh Vektar He wanted my wheels so I swapped him for a Sony Walkman :D The sound & the speed screen made him very popular! everyone wanted to get the fastest MPH but it was the Radio that I liked, never did get to tear it down to see it's insides.
Before watching this video, I had always honestly believed that the "Taraco Neoroder" from Super Cars was entirely made-up (and I loved it, by the way). I had never, ever heard of the Alfa Romeo SZ, let alone seen one. You learn something new every day, I guess... Wonderful video and collaboration. I already knew Big Car and much appreciated some of his older videos. As a past Amiga gamer, nostalgia hit strong.
I think my favourite video game car is the Skyline Super Silhouette from Gran Turismo 2. It just looked so different from anything else in the game. That was the first title I played that included some rally content, and I was hooked. Thanks for the video! I really enjoyed the collaboration!
I agree with Super Cars 2. I never owned an Amiga, so I never got the chance to try the one-player mode. But a friend of mine owned an Amiga, so we played the heck out of the two-player mode. There was however one other (more normal) car game on the Amiga that I was fascinated by. I read and re-read the articles on that game and really let my eyes linger on the screenshots. The game was Jaguar XJ220. As far as I remember it, Core Design was always really good at graphics. So good in fact that some of their games seemed to me back then to be made for the next generation of the machine. I was however a PC-user, and did my gaming time during the 90s on that platform. One car game that I played a lot was Stunts. I am told by the internet that it was known as 4D Sports Driving outside the US, but I always knew it as stunts. Me and my brother played that game quite a lot, and each had our favourite cars. His favourite was the Jaguar, and I thing I went for the Lamborghini.
I think Andy would struggle to make a documentary about my favourite racing game: "Well, you might think that the anti-gravity vehicles in WipeOut are impossible, but... well, you'd be right" 😆 Micro Machines offers more possibilities, though. (And for me the Micro Machines games were the pinnacle of the top-down, scrolling racers, and were a heck of a lot of fun. And you've got to love Codemasters' innovation in producing a cartridge for Micro Machines 2 on the Mega Drive with two extra controller ports built-in to the cartridge itself!) But there is one iconic car from a racing game I'd love to see him make a documentary about - the Lancia Delta HF Integrale from Sega Rally Championship.
At first, a 40 minute video on this felt daunting to watch, but it was really cool to see the places the cars were used, switching back and forth between game and car!
Oh my. My respect for you got even higher now when I learn that you've at least owned an Alfa or two. Personally, I fought with my Amigas alone all the way to 2002 before I had to cave in and buy a PC, just so I could play GP3. Still fighting with the Alfa Romeo's though, have never owned any other car brand. :)
I love this video! I'd love to see another one like this, this was one of the most seamless collabs I've ever seen! And I'd love to see more compilations like this from Andy! make a video discussing all the cars from 1984 Transformers, or something like that. Great work guys!
Outrun was a favourite of mine, we had the full sit down hydraulic version in our local arcade (Swanage). I would regularly pull huge crowds that would watch me drive to the "Sea Breeze" sound track.
If I was rich I would spend my time Tracking down, restoring and playing all the great arcade games I played as a kid. I was lucky to live near a seafront town so we had them all.
Outrun is definitely the greatest of all time. Another I enjoyed was NFS Porsche Unleashed which had great old convertibles and a fun career mode. That ego thing...true, completed outrun in an arcade.
LAN party games before LAN parties were a thing! I never played Lotus but I do have very fond memories of playing Stunt Car Racer on my A1200 vs my late younger brother on his hand me down A500 with a home made serial cable. So much fun!
Another great video Neil, thank you! Driving games have always been one of my favorite genre of games, especially arcade based ones. Outrun was always one game I would play anytime I saw it, always a good time. I love it so much we bought one of those Arcade1Up Outrun cabinets and the kids are playing it constantly. I want to play that Lotus Turbo Challenge now that you have featured it. Looks amazing! There was a Ferrari 328 in Rad Racer for the NES, that was a car I loved as a kid.
The Colin McRae impreza was the 22B (see the rear number plate in game). 22B in hex is 555 in decimal. 555 was the number put on the car (see footage at 37m25s). That's the only computer/car fact I can give you to add anything to this content.
I just realised that Big Foot (NES) and Off Road (NES) were two different games! I played both as a kid and somehow during the decades since, my memory has mixed the two into one... Colin McRae Rally, as a teen we sometimes went to my mate's place to play that on a friday night if there was nothing interesting going on in our small town. He had the steering wheel and pedals, it was pretty amazing at that point! Either that or listening to Black Sabbath on his great hi-fi system or wathcing horror movies on his home theatre system with a huge subwoofer. As for favourite game, I loved Spy Hunter on C64. I played it in my other mate's place years before reaching teenage years, and he had a steering wheel controller too! It was magic! This took me back to memories I was not sure I even had anymore, so big thanks for that! I think I have mentioned that before, but I'll mention it again. That's why I'm subscribed to this channel, the memories that you conjure up from the parts of my brain I didn' know I had, and because you make great videos of things that I'm interested in!
I'm glad you mentioned Outrun, it was the game I was shouting at the screen from the start of the episode! I loved the exoticness of the Ferrari and California. For me the best retro/arcade racing games are: - Micro Machines on the Mega Drive - Need for Speed on the Saturn (with the Dodge Viper of course) - Sega Rally, I always picked the Toyota Celica because it looked the best. - GTI Club with the Mini Cooper on the fake Monaco circuit - Wipeout on the PS1. Not a car racing game I admit but I have great memories of playing it with my friend before going into Laser Quest or going to a cyber cafe to play on the early Internet.
This vid has rebooted so many speccy, amstrad & Amiga racing memories in my addled nut! That Magnetic Fields ident intro thing gives me chills. Great vid.
14:44 Before you even finished the sentence I had gameplay of Nazca C2 in NFS III running in my head. After hearing the sound I thought of Gran Turismo 2, but I can't think of any specific car in that game, it has so many intriguing cars. Or rather, I've already learned about most of the interesting cars and pretty much all that remain are concept cars. Like that Nazca I mentioned. Whilst writing this, one car came up in my mind from that NFS that might interest British people, Jaguar XJR-15. That one is pretty rare and I can't remember seeing it in many games.
That was a great idea for a video. I’ve never owned any of the featured cars, but spent 10 minutes driving my grandson’s WRX, and about the same amount of time in a Lotus Europa back in 1975.
My first ever encounter with Space Harrier and Outrun was in Weymouth in the mid 80's too 😁 We probably played on the same machines, heck we may even have been in the same arcade at the same time (summer holidays) Crazy
@@RMCRetro I had a friend who lived in Weymouth for a while. I had a mad idea of painting a happy smiley face on that fast A road from Dorchester to Weymouth, just before it descends down into the outskirts. Sort of "welcome to Weymouth".
It was also Outrun and Chase HQ that got me into racing games at a time when I also got into cars. My love of cars and racing games led me to firstly study to be an actual car designer, but in the end I became a video game car artist and designer! My career started in 2001 working in Oxford, and currently I’m teaching game art down in Falmouth University. Thanks for some nostalgia with this video! Sadly you didn’t mention any games I worked on but I enjoyed you’re personal selection!
I always loved how the early outrun games used a mirror car model to denote if you were steering left or right. you can tell by the little horse logo on the back and as it switches sides with each turn from left to right. It made it easier to program the game because they didnt have to redraw the car model for each turn, just flip it. Later outrun games (like outrun 2) they had to program the car model at various angles of a turn in order to maintain the horse logo only being in one direction. Now, since they no longer have the ferrari license, Sega has changed the logo on the back of the car into a bird (as seen in the switch/3ds versions) which is the same shape regardless of turning left or right.
What an absolute treat this video is. Superb to learn more about Ironman’s Toyota and the pinnacle of gaming for me - Outrun and it’s unique Testarossa. Another of my arcade go to’s was Taito’s Chase H.Q - they had one in Gatwick Airport and my parents would have to take my sister and I to the airport just to play it! Naturally, as a C64 owner, I was gutted with the Ocean conversion. How I now love the Porsche 928 though. Also the C64 version of Sega’s Power Drift blew me away when Zzap!64 gave a free demo on tape away with an issue. That really brought the spirit of the arcade home for me and I still play that game today - along with Outrun (my no.1 game of all time) and Chase H.Q. If only we could get a kickstarter funded to have Chris Butler, the genius behind the C64 port of Power Drift, to do his magic with a proper Chase H.Q for the C64. I would love to know from Andy what type of crazy buggy we drove in Power Drift. And who could forget Stunt Car Racer - what a gem and what was that car? Thank you for these videos. Wonderful to watch…
test drive 2 : the duel. car was the f40.. or on the expansion pack the RUF 911. Also loved Vette on the PC, Stunt Car Racer on Amiga and finally No Second Prize on Amiga for the bikers
What a fantastic concept. I hope there will be more instalments in this series. My favourite driving game has always bene the original Sega Rally driving the Celica. The handling is sublime. Previously I enjoyed driving the Ferrari 328 in Rad Racer, with the blue/red 3d vision. As close to Outrun as I could get.
A fantastic selection of both cars and games, thanks Neil and Andy! I'd like to add the Lamborghini Diablo from Crazy Cars III (or Lamborghini American Challenge, as it's also known).
I'd rather not think of how much money I spent in the arcade on Hard Drivin' (the sit-down version with three monitors, manual transmission, clutch, brake, and gas pedals) or on Out Run. I finished them all repeatedly. At home on my Commodore 128 and Amiga 2000, hundreds of hours were spent playing Test Drive and Test Drive 2. Years later, I'd be immersed in Gran Turismo on the PS1 with a smattering of other racing games here and there. But these mentioned were my favorites.
I remember snickering when I saw the sleazy car salesman from Super Cars, on a wanted poster at the cop shop in Super Cars 2. Don't really rememberuch else, but that little gag stuck with me.
Great video! Outrun is my all time favourite arcade. Still never completed it though! Suggestions for another video...chase hq, need for speed underground and who could ignore gran turismo 1 and the honda nsx
Your choice of games would be incredibly similar to mine. Yes, as an Italian, Outrun and the Testarossa are my couple of choice, and I also wanted to have a red Lotus Esprit V8 SE, but just to choose something different, I'd go with SEGA Rally and the legendary Lancia Delta Integrale.
The first need for speed is where I first learned about some of the cars in this episode. I watched all the videos and articles in the game when I usually skipped fmv in all games. The first gran turismo also has good articles for each car which was very impressive before wikipedia.
There was also "Hard Drivin'" by Atari that featured a very Testarossa alike car. The sequel "Race Drivin'" had several others as well. I'm pretty sure one of them was based on the immortal AC Cobra.
A few of my favorites: On PC: NFS Porsche Unleashed (Car: 78? Turbo), Test Drive the Duel (959), NFS IIse (GT90), Street Rod. On NES: RC Pro AM. On PS2: GT4.
I'll never forget playing the tilt version of Radmobile. Having even one tilt machine would be the making of several videos (oh, and I vote for the Aston Martin DB8- the best game in Stunt Race FX 3)
The Outrun car was actually the Pininfarina Mythos, a low-production customized Testarossa that Pininfarina sold directly and caried their badging instead of Ferrari’s.
couldn't help but notice good old rich leadbetter from digital foundry's name pop up around the 4:28 mark. i always forget how long hes been active in the games industry
I was puzzled at first why two of my favorite channels appear both with a new video with similiar titles on my yt timeline. Now I know 😆 Please do that again some day!
Loved playing iron man off road with mates at the arcade. Once got free play and played for so long that even with a maxed out car the game so hard it was impossible to win.
They did come back during the brief 3DTV craze around 2010 with Sony, Panasonic and Samsung pushing them hard, it made no difference, the general public just doesn't want 3D displays.
excellent. two of my most appreciated shows in one. it would even better, if you could have terchmoan also complainig about the old stereos in the cars ;D
@rmc before these games there used to be the real version where there would be steering wheels and radio controlled cars on a race track. It was as you can imagine a very big machine about 20ft squared box there were about 8 steering wheels and pedals. I remember it being in an arcade near the central pier at Blackpool if I remember correctly.
Loved it, would love to see another vid with your favourite planes from games. Stunt Car Racer has to be one of my fav racing games, nunno if the car existed in real life.
Great episode! I love the idea of mixing two topics together like videogames and cars. I love retrocomputers and i love the cars of that era too. I would choose an Peugeot 106 Rally from Gran Turismo 2. Gran Turismo 1 was a game changer. Such a great game!
Throughout this I was thinking, and you touched on it at the end, that I’d like to see the reverse of this. Pick a car then show a bunch of standout games that it has appeared in.

Well, this is a collaboration I would never have expected. But it is a brilliant one. :)
My first experience with driving simulators was Test Drive from Accolade back in 1987 and the Porsche really stood out for me.
Yep. Test Drive was the first game I had on the Amiga. Many many hours spent on that game
Test Drive was my first also. Even on my dads clunky 286, with a green phosphor monitor it still satisfied my need for speed.
Phenomenal to see this crossover, thoroughly enjoy both channels

- Wipeout on the PS1.
Nice! I grew up down the road in Dorchester and later went to Weymouth college so I was there a lot
@@RMCRetro I had a friend who lived in Weymouth for a while. I had a mad idea of painting a happy smiley face on that fast A road from Dorchester to Weymouth, just before it descends down into the outskirts. Sort of "welcome to Weymouth".
I remember playing what must have been one of the earliest driving games, In the arcade in Lyme Regis, I'm guessing in the mid seventies
Just breeze over the fact the the Esprit turns into a freaking submarine.
I love it when CZcams channels I follow do collabs
I always loved how the early outrun games used a mirror car model to denote if you were steering left or right. you can tell by the little horse logo on the back and as it switches sides with each turn from left to right. It made it easier to program the game because they didnt have to redraw the car model for each turn, just flip it. Later outrun games (like outrun 2) they had to program the car model at various angles of a turn in order to maintain the horse logo only being in one direction. Now, since they no longer have the ferrari license, Sega has changed the logo on the back of the car into a bird (as seen in the switch/3ds versions) which is the same shape regardless of turning left or right.
i remember Test Drive 1 and 2 on my Amiga 2000. The Ferrari F40 was mostly my weapon of choice in de 2nd title.
Spent many a Friday teatime at the local arcade playing Super Monaco GP with Aryton Senna's McLaren Honda. Great video Btw.
i loved this collab! Hope to see more of this!
Thank you 😊
What an absolute treat this video is.
Morris Meets the Bikers on the ZX Spectrum 1983. I used to own a Morris Minor 1000 that was older than I was.
test drive 2 : the duel. car was the f40.. or on the expansion pack the RUF 911.
My picks 🤓:
- Test Drive 3 & Acura NSX
- Stunts & Ferrari GTO
I remember snickering when I saw the sleazy car salesman from Super Cars, on a wanted poster at the cop shop in Super Cars 2. Don't really rememberuch else, but that little gag stuck with me.
The Cizeta Moroder from Super Cars 2. That was a very rare car with a V16 engine. That was mindblowing back then.
Cool video. Love RMC and Big Car 😀👍👍👍
@RMC - The Cave.
I used to play the Supercars games on the Amiga.
I’ve also owned an SZ since 2000!
That's awesome! Is it as fun as it looks?
Great video! Outrun is my all time favourite arcade. Still never completed it though!
Suggestions for another video...chase hq, need for speed underground and who could ignore gran turismo 1 and the honda nsx
Perfect collaboration!
Love it when two channels I subscribe to team up.
As soon as I see that Magnetic Fields intro, I think of the album, wonder if it was their favourite 🤔
The Ferrari Testarossa mentioned had a horizontally opposed flat-12 engine, not a V12 as stated at 33:42.
My interest also grew thanks to sims such as Micropose Grand Prix, which remains as a true masterpiece of a driving sim on the Amiga 500!
24:30 You should use those trees.
Wot no Porsche 928 from Chase HQ? Great vid Neil, as usual.
I wouldn't worry about how Andy pronounces words. Have you heard him say 'Peugeot?' The man is a maniac
I was puzzled at first why two of my favorite channels appear both with a new video with similiar titles on my yt timeline. Now I know 😆
Please do that again some day!
What a great idea for a video. Top notch car game picks and Andy's fascinating insights.
Loved playing iron man off road with mates at the arcade. Once got free play and played for so long that even with a maxed out car the game so hard it was impossible to win.
You would think that with today's super-fast LCDs and OLEDs, there would be some way to bring shutter glasses back.
Lotus II on the amiga, memory dump the soundtrack and listen to every sound.. theres neat surprise there.
The best CZcams collaboration ever!
this was a great video! Thanks Neil and thank you to Andy from Big Car
I rocked Colin McRae with my MS wheel and a projector. Got my father and uncle real competitive too. Drunk driving made fun and safe!
Throughout this I was thinking, and you touched on it at the end, that I’d like to see the reverse of this. Pick a car then show a bunch of standout games that it has appeared in.
Love Big Car! Great collaboration / crossover!
Hmm, Lotus 2 was prob my fav driving game on the Amiga....also loved Indianapolis 500.
I had a feeling Outrun was going to be on the list. 😉
I'm from the USA, born in 1983, and I never knew who Ivan Stewart was either
Haha well that makes me feel a little better thanks
The Sony music makes me think of Porsche Challenge - Boxster.
