    The original ending had them getting back together.
    Robin Williams, Sally Field, and Chris Columbus, all of whom had been divorced before, asked to change it, not wanting to give kids with divorced parents false hope the same would happen for them.

    This is a movie where no one person is at fault. He lacked responsibility, he wanted to be the fun parent and be liked. They didnt agree to him being a stay at home dad so she was working a hard job and then coming home and parenting not only the kids but her husband. He also didnt have a stable job and while he was standing up for soemthing, he quit his job out of nowhere just expecting her to pick up the slack and pay the bills. He also, obviously, didnt do much around the house as we see him learn the household basics during this film. He learned through being Mrs Doubtfire how to be the responsible parent and you saw the impact on the family; Miranda was happier, the balance was better and the kids excelled in school. He also gained a sense of acomplisment and confidence that then fed into his work situation. She is also at fault, though, as she kept the hurt and resentment she felt to herself for years, and while she says that he didnt want to talk about anything serious, it got to the point where they imploded and she undoubtedly found solace in her work. You can tell how incredibly unhappy she was at the beginning of the film and that kind of unhappiness over the years with no resolution leads to bitterness and resentment which affects those around you. Miranda and Daniel are very similar to my parents, who are no longer together and didn't have the resolution that Miranda and Daniel were able to come to in this movie. I was always grateful that I saw this film when i was younger, though, as it helped me to understand their relationship and personalities better.

      Came here to say basically this.
      I also have to say the only person that felt super antagonistic in the end was that judge -- the wording they gave for why he came to the conclusion he did felt super wrong-headed and not the sort of judgment he should have come to without experts to back it up. He essentially said Daniel was crazy and potentially dangerous because he was an actor and capable of pulling off a disguise. And the way they described his supervised visitations later (if I want to hug my children they want to know why) feels VERY suggestive of like, the "groomer" libel you see thrown at anyone who is nonconforming still today. And you can't divorce it from that because his gay brother helped him wear drag. It is part of the text.
      Side-eye. I am side-eyeing.
      Personally I think the fact that he heard a man say not to put something in his food because of a SEVERE ALLERGY, and his first impulse was to put as much of that in his food as possible was a WAY BIGGER red flag since that was, yknow, literal attempted manslaughter at best. And THAT might be a good reason to consider full custody for the time being, judge. But 90s movie with 90s biases gonna 90s movie, apparently.

      All of this. As a kid I remember thinking the mom was SO MEAN but now as a mom myself, seeing her come home from her stressful job to that mess of a house she had to clean up, learning she was now the solely employed parent and her husband couldn't even be trusted to clean up and parent, being forced to be the "mean parent" I have SO much sympathy for her. I think maybe we could have seen more of their pre-life to get us more on her side? As is it's a very one-sided story as we really only get Daniel's perspective

    • @miriam8376
      @miriam8376 Před rokem +22

      Exactly. As a kid, I was entirely on his side, but as a grown woman-you don’t want to be married to another child that you have to clean up after and can’t trust to do his fair share. You need a partner you can count on and who doesn’t take advantage of you being the grown-up who does the hard work. He grows up a lot as Mrs. Doubtfire, and it’s sad that he only learns it too late and that he needed this to learn how to be a good partner as well as a good dad. I think it’s part of why she’s right not to trust him to take the kids every day at the beginning of the movie but is right to trust him with the kids every day at the end. Being Mrs. Doubtfire changes him for the better.

    I feel like everyone looks at Daniel as the good guy here, because it's Robin Williams, but realistically, they both contributed to this happening. His only focus was on being the fun, liked parent, which left Miranda to do practically EVERYTHING else. Make sure the kids keep up with schoolwork, housework, cooking, keeping up on bills when Daniel quit or got fired from another job, etc. This went on for YEARS. He needed to grow up and be a responsible parent, and as tough of a situation as this was, it caused him to do just that. People are too hard on Miranda

      Thing is we see him reverse that in the movie, holding a job while raising the kids effectively and even taking care of the house. he also went behind her back for the party, and did it deliberately, saying she wouldn't be home for four hours. It's implied that this sort of thing is not, in fact, a one-time deal. Miranda is called by the neighbor not only because the neighbor is upset but because, as the policeman points out, violations are being committed, and Miranda is the one who has to deal with the potential legal ramifications, not just the cleaning of the house. He is the fun parent, but he doesn't know or care about discipline or responsibility. He is, in essence, another child. It's possible that Miranda kept things inside because she intuited that Daniel wouldn't fully comprehend what the problem was. Until he undertakes Mrs. Doutfire, he basically understands only one point of view: his. It's reflected also in his behavior toward the Pierce Brosnan character who is a rival, but a decent person, who doesn't know that his competition is right in front of him. Daniel cheats. He reacts childishly instead of reflecting. He inflicts harm on the Pierce Brosnan character at the restaurant. Daniel has a LOT of growing up to do, and it takes most of the movie as Mrs. Doubtfire for that to happen.

      Also, at the end... yes it sucks that he is only able to see his children with supervision, and that men in general have a much harder time getting custody of their kids (no arguments there). But when Miranda wants to stop arguing over who did what to who and Thor says "that's convenient"- I think he's completely brushing past the fact that Daniel disguised himself as a woman to illegally gain access to their children and her home, lied to her face for months, and was actively sabotaging her new relationship! Honestly, he's lucky he's not in jail right now. So I actually think it's quite big of her to be willing to forgive that so quickly

    I have to pop onto the comments and defend Miranda as well. I think it’s quite a realistic reason for break up, sure we see a man who obviously likes to have fun and do fun things with his kids but you can also see that she takes the brunt of the household care taking, cooking dinners, cleaning etc etc while also being the main source of income for the family. You can tell by the look on her face when she walks in from work that it’s probably the first time in a decade she’s ever had a meal cooked for her when she got home.
    Edited to add after finishing the review:
    You have to understand that what I said above is emotional neglect, I can definitely understand her resentment towards Daniel because frankly instead of taking any responsibility for his actions he just trash talked her to his kids and treated her with contempt.

      Honestly, both Daniel and Miranda are valid in their feelings but pretty awful towards each other and say awful things about each other to and in front of their kids. But that's kinda the reality of a lot of divorces, and frankly...if this were real life and not a comedy movie, I'd say that Daniel needs to go to jail after the way he behaved in this. Maybe it starts as him wanting to be around his kids, but it takes almost no time for him to start manipulating Miranda into confiding things in him that she wouldn't have if she knew who he was, trying to sabotage her love life (sorry, my dude, you're allowed to be jealous, but you don't get to act on it. You're divorced. She's not with you anymore). He assaults Stuart with a fruit at the pool And literally poisoned the guy's food by adding something he knew he was allergic to. We sympathize with Daniel when we watch this movie because he's played by Robin Williams, and he's funny And charming, but really... all he had to do was find an actual job that didn't involve going into his ex-wife's house under false pretenses, and he was given time by the court to do that. Now he has a whole bunch of charges that could potentially be brought up against him, including contempt of court, that could land him in jail, where he'll see his kids even less. If I were Miranda, I wouldn't have gone and gotten the court order lifted after finding out he was Mrs. Doubtfire. I'd have filed for a restraining order. And we're supposed to feel sorry for him when he's complaining about supervised visits, and it's like "don't act like she's the bad guy here! Those are the consequences of your actions."
      Also if you listen to him talk about his kids, it's always "I need my kids." "I'm addicted to my children." "It's like asking me to go without air." It's always "I need" and "me, me, me," never "what's best for the kids?" Or "they need," or "what do they think?" Or "I don't have the means to give them stability right now."
      Also, please don't get me wrong...I do enjoy this movie for what it is with a bit of suspension of disbelief. But I also like to keep perspective on what is actually happening, and it is stalker behavior.

Daniel was just being the cool dad without actually considering what’s best for his kids, and how it affects his wife’s relationship with them when he’s always being irresponsible and fun and then she has to come in and be the mean one. The irony is when he’s Mrs. Doubtfire, he’s doing everything Miranda wanted him to do in the first place. If he could’ve just gotten it together and been that more structured but still loving and supportive parent when Miranda asked him to over the years, they may have never even gotten divorced to begin with. He learned to be a better father through acting as Mrs. Doubtfire.

    I actually agree with Miranda more than Daniel. It's great to have a funny dad, it's not great to have a dad that is a clown. Imagine if your husband can't keep a job and is always in between jobs. You become the sole provider which is still fine, but if I am her since I am the sole provider I would expect the house to be clean and for him to get the cooking done. But she has to be the sole provider and doing cooking & cleaning. Then the kids education was falling behind, Miranda wants to discipline them but Daniel wants her to take it easy. It's like Daniel doesn't care about anything except for having fun. Being a dad is not just about having fun time with your kids. You have a lot of responsibilities to handle and the responsibilities come first before having fun. If Daniel would have step up like he did at the end, they wouldn't have been divorced at the first place. I do however agree that Miranda was being cruel by refusing to share custody with Daniel. Women who do this type of stuff are not doing it for their kids best interest. They want revenge which is horrible. Miranda managed to come to her senses and realize what she did was wrong and what matters the most is the kids future. Not many women are like her.

    • @sawanna508
      @sawanna508 Před 5 měsíci

      I don't think you are right that they want revenge. This maybe the case sometimes but not always. There maybe many reasons for that. There are many ways to harm your own children like for example mental abuse or neglect (which is abuse too) or if the father is not able to provide for the children. Sometimes it may not be best for the kids interest but mothers have needs and interest too. So if there is just too much conflict and bitterness between them the mother/woman may do that to protect herself.

      @secrets.295 Před 5 měsíci

    In Marandas defense when Daniel is saying let’s go to therapy and she says it’s too late for that Felt like she probably suggested that he Brushed it off and wasn’t listening and then when he says we love each other don’t wait and the camera looks at her I don’t think people get it but she has finally realized she does not love him anymore and if you don’t have love in your marriage, and you are not happy then why are you saying you can’t stay together for the kids that’s not a good thing. Also living in San Francisco in the 1990s that house was have been about $800,000-$900,000 so she would’ve had to climb the corporate ladder in order for them to survive in that city. That’s what she means she didn’t have a choice she had to go to work she had to be the breadwinner I feel like she probably put her dreams aside to make sure the family was taken care of, this is one of those movies that we watched as a kid you hate her character so much but when you watch it as an adult with children of your own, you get her better!

The party shows that, he goes behind his wife's back to undermine her parenting. There was no way this marriage would've survived. Thanks to being Mrs. Doubtfire, Daniel grows into a much more responsible father. Both their lives end up in a happier place at the end, which is the best way for their family, and I really like that the film took this route.

    Just have to clarify when you said "What, $300 a week? That's only $1,200 a month, no wonder he can't afford a nice place!" You have to keep in mind money changes over time, you need to account for inflation. $1,00 a month in 1993 is equivalent to about $2,500 a month in todays money! Considering he not only was working as Mrs. Doubtfire but also had the main job at the film place, he was definitely making enough money to afford a perfectly fine place to live, especially considering the average rent in San Fransisco back in 1993 for a 2 bedroom apartment was anywhere from $1,000-1,300/month. He had that covered just by being Mrs. Doubtfire, and surely he was making at least an equal amount at the other job as well I think he would easily manage it, and he did, as you saw once the film continued. I've got to ask, just WHAT was your dog eating at 17:02?? LOL Pup is too cute!

    Ah, coolies! I still use this account to watch some old saved videos and this reaction came up randomly on my feed. I’ve been really “good” so far but I just HAD to watch this! This is my favourite Robin Williams film because it combines comedy and drama so well. Now I totally get that you’re siding with Daniel more because that’s how I felt when I first watched it, but that heart to heart scene between Miranda & Mrs. Doubtfire changed everything for me when I rewatched this as an adult. You see how Miranda felt unsupported by Daniel (how she felt she had to be the “bad cop”), and I love that the film did that because you could see the attempt to not take sides (even though Robin Williams is more loveable). I love the irony that by deceiving/ being someone he wasn’t, Daniel was able to be truly honest/vulnerable and that translated over to Miranda as well. The film also handles the theme of divorce exceptionally well, like how it affects everyone involved and the “realistic” ending as you mentioned. Although, while I do appreciate that ending because it’s relatable for many people, I’ll admit I’m slightly conflicted cause I do have a fixed view on what love is (changeless/ a constant). Everyone has their own stories and reasons for why divorce is sometimes the only option, but I personally believe that if you both go into it knowing it’s true love then you can overcome anything. In Miranda’s case, I feel like she kinda settled for Daniel.
    On a lighter note, I’ll say that I’m always amused at how I never realised how serious this film was as a kid. I always watched it every time it came on TV because it made me laugh so hard but I never felt the weight of the divorce at all and I certainly didn’t get the innuendo at the dinner scene between Daniel and Stu. I remember being confused about why he was mentioning random stuff like Humpty Dumpty haha. I think it’s cool you were able to appreciate that on first watch.
    Favourite as a kid: Face in the cake
    Now: “No. He was hit by a Guinness truck. So, it was quite literally the drink that killed him.”
    Anyway, thanks for reacting to this amazing film! It made me miss this channel again haha. Seeing you get the jokes but also connecting on an emotional level with Daniel is what makes your reactions so great. And it’s so nice to see the channel still going strong by the way! I hope all is well Thor!

They actually cut it from the movie but there is a deleted scene that takes places after the restraunt where Daniel comes over and they really have it out while the kids sit upstairs listening just crushed. She doesn't want to start something like that again and it shows they just don't work, barely in the same room for 30 seconds and they are already at each other

    This movie is one of my favorites to watch, I love this movie, Robin Williams does a great job as an old lady.

    I loved this movie as a kid and despite those coming to Miranda's defense, honestly, we *never* see her try: she dismisses marriage counseling, divorces her husband on her son's birthday, is already clearly into Stu who she starts dating *immediately*, and instantly starts using "her" children as leverage to manipulate and upset her ex husband, especially dropping them off late and picking them up early and then acting as if he's the unreasonable one....and he takes all this abuse up until that point because he's acting in good faith up until that point. She even admits to Mrs. Doubtfire that she never even told Daniel she was unhappy. We won't even get into the discussion on assets and alimony post-divorce.
    Also, the primary reason the judge removed custody (despite the fact that the courts heavily stack custody in the favor of mothers even despite circumstances and behavior) was because dad had been dressing as woman. He might be one of those dangerous queers, whom you certainly can't let around children, especially until we have psychological assessment and, as he said, possible treatment. 🙄
    ...and to those saying that Daniel was trying to always be *friend* not father, I would argue the scene where he says "Watch your mouth, young man!" and slips into his own voice shows that he indeed is not a pushover and sets limits. Mrs. Doubtfire, even in the beginning, is firm, but fair *and* we see her biking and playing soccer with them. Other than the building of his cooking and housekeeping skills, I don't think Mrs. Doubtfire is that different from his usual personality!
